This book offers a close and rigorous examination of the arguments for and against scientific realism and introduces key positions in the scientific realism/antirealism debate, which is one of the central debates in contemporary philosophy of science. On the one hand, scientific realists argue that we have good reasons to believe that our best scientific theories are approximately true because, if they were not even approximately true, they would not be able to explain and predict natural phenomena with such impressive accuracy. On the other hand, antirealists argue that the success of science does not warrant belief in the approximate truth of our best scientific theories. This is because the history of science is a graveyard of theories that were once successful but were later discarded. The author eventually settles on a middle-ground position between scientific realism and antirealism called “relative realism”.

Many people are admirers of science and are eager to know more about it but are woefully unaware of why that knowledge is so powerful. That lack of understanding can be exploited by those with harmful agendas to sow doubt about the validity of the consensus conclusions arrived at by scientists about issues of major importance. This book's explanation of why the theories of science work so well without being true may not only surprise them, it would also enable them to counter harmful anti-science agendas and provide practical benefits by enabling them to make much better judgments about issues in their everyday lives.

This workbook was developed to support Crossing Over, a pilot research programme for training teachers in contemporary science education (a project of the Human Sciences Research Council and the Africa Genome Initiative). The project aimed to equip educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to deal with changes in the Natural Sciences and Life Sciences curricula. The workbook provides key content necessary for teaching concepts recently introduced in these curricula: comparative functioning, relationships and the development of change, or evolution. This is an interactive, well-illustrated workbook that helps teachers to build their own understanding of genes, the mechanisms of inheritance and selection - the basic principles of evolution. It is divided into two parts, with the first intended to supplement the work of General Education and Training (GET) teachers, and the second providing support for Further Education and Training (FET) teachers.

The articles in this volume deal with the main inferential methods that can be applied to different kinds of experimental evidence. These contributions - accompanied with critical comments - by renowned scholars in the field of philosophy of science aim at removing the traditional opposition between inductivists and deductivists. They explore the different methods of explanation and justification in the sciences in different contexts and with different objectives. The volume contains contributions on methods of the sciences, especially on induction, deduction, abduction, laws, probability and explanation, ranging from logic, mathematics, natural to the social sciences. They present a highly topical pluralist re-evaluation of methodological and foundational procedures and reasoning, e.g. focusing in Bayesianism and Artificial Intelligence. They document the second international conference in Vienna on "Induction and Deduction in the Sciences" as part of the Scientific Network on "Historical and Contemporary Perspectives of Philosophy of Science in Europe", funded by the European Science Foundation (ESF).
