"Almost daily, we are challenged to consider the concepts of quality, as we evaluate our jobs, the products we produce, or the services we provide, and even as we try to reconcile the outcomes of our lifestyle with its costs. We use terms like quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvements; but, if pressed, most of us world have a hard time explaining what "quality" actually is. In On Track to Quality, you will discover the definition for yourself through the perspective of an entertaining mix of train passengers stranded by a winter snowstorm. As they contemplate the topic of quality, they find that their task turns out to be more complicated than they first imagined. Clearer understanding emerges through the thoughtful, witty dialogue of the snowbound travelers - a discovery that will help you improve the quality of your business, and even help you better recognize quality in your personal life. From Harleys to healthcare, On Track to Quality contains insight for people in all walks of life. All aboard this "train of thought", as conductor Dr. James K. Todd relates a revealing ride on the rails of quality" -- Dust jacket.

The International Symposium on Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and Tracks is the leading international gathering of scientists and engineers from academia and industry in the field of ground vehicle dynamics to present and exchange their latest innovations and breakthroughs. Established in Vienna in 1977, the International Association of Vehicle System Dynamics (IAVSD) has since held its biennial symposia throughout Europe and in the USA, Canada, Japan, South Africa and China. The main objectives of IAVSD are to promote the development of the science of vehicle dynamics and to encourage engineering applications of this field of science, to inform scientists and engineers on the current state-of-the-art in the field of vehicle dynamics and to broaden contacts among persons and organisations of the various countries engaged in scientific research and development in the field of vehicle dynamics and related areas. IAVSD 2017, the 25th Symposium of the International Association of Vehicle System Dynamics was hosted by the Centre for Railway Engineering at Central Queensland University, Rockhampton, Australia in August 2017. The symposium focused on the following topics related to road and rail vehicles and trains: dynamics and stability; vibration and comfort; suspension; steering; traction and braking; active safety systems; advanced driver assistance systems; autonomous road and rail vehicles; adhesion and friction; wheel-rail contact; tyre-road interaction; aerodynamics and crosswind; pantograph-catenary dynamics; modelling and simulation; driver-vehicle interaction; field and laboratory testing; vehicle control and mechatronics; performance and optimization; instrumentation and condition monitoring; and environmental considerations. Providing a comprehensive review of the latest innovative developments and practical applications in road and rail vehicle dynamics, the 213 papers now published in these proceedings will contribute greatly to a better understanding of related problems and will serve as a reference for researchers and engineers active in this specialised field. Volume 2 contains 135 papers under the subject heading Rail.

TQM is a tough process. Whether your company is straying and struggling midway along the quality path or has just begun the journey, The Quality Roadmap will help get you back on the road. And you'll not only continue your journey, but you'll see your destination clearly and understand why your company is on this pilgrimage. The Quality Roadmap is not like other books on this subject. It doesn't contain guru revelations, it doesn't dictate which tools to use, and it doesn't subject you to long-winded theories. It's a pragmatic, universal planning model developed by the authors and the Council for Continuous Improvement, a consortium of more than 140 quality-seeking companies. This model is based on patterns of success that both the authors and the Council found in research and was created specifically to help you take a long-range look at your company's quality efforts and figure out: Where are we now? Where do we want to be? How do we get there? The Quality Roadmap shows how to avoid common pitfalls along the way, such as trying to do too much emphasis on massive training efforts, or focusing mainly on manufacturing. The book presents a map that will help your company get past these quagmires and focuses on improvement targets that give the biggest return. The "map," which actually resembles something more like a three-dimensional cube, will enable your company to pinpoint those areas of improvement that will yield the most significant results for your business; plan your quality effort for the next few years, and set up a series of improvement targets that are in the best strategic order; and take control of your quality effort's destination and help you get there faster and less expensively.

The United States Circuit Courts of Appeals are among the most important governmental institutions in our society. However, because the Supreme Court can hear less than 150 cases per year, the Circuit Courts (with a combined caseload of over 60,000) are, for practical purposes, the courts of last resort for all but a tiny fraction of federal court litigation. Thus, their significance, both for ultimate dispute resolution and for the formation and application of federal law, cannot be overstated. Yet, in the last forty years, a dramatic increase in caseload and a systemic resistance to an increased judgeship have led to a crisis. Signed published opinions form only a small percentage of dispositions; judges confer on fifty routine cases in an afternoon; and most litigants are denied oral argument completely. In Injustice on Appeal: The United States Courts of Appeals in Crisis, William M. Richman and William L. Reynolds chronicle the transformation of the United States Circuit Courts; consider the merits and dangers of continued truncating procedures; catalogue and respond to the array of specious arguments against increasing the size of the judiciary; and consider several ways of reorganizing the circuit courts so that they can dispense traditional high quality appellate justice even as their caseloads and the number of appellate judgeships increase. The work serves as an analytical capstone to the authors' thirty years of research on the issue and will constitute a powerful piece of advocacy for a more responsible and egalitarian approach to caseload glut facing the circuit courts.
