A need was felt for its bilingual edition after One Hundred Poems of Chokha Mela became a prescribed text for MA (Hon.) in English program of the University of Mumbai. This book contains English translation and its source poem on the same page next to each other, so that the readers can compare and contrast the two texts in order to understand the translation process. We believe this arrangement will help the students of Indian Literature in Translation to understand the translation strategies one employs in order to render Marathi Bhakti literature as accurately as possible in English. ******************************************************************************************************************** Expressions of the human soul that dares to aspire!!! Chokha Mela was a 13th century poet from India, who was born in the most downtrodden community, yet rose to become one of the most significant poets in Indian literary history. His poems have withstood the onslaught of Time for last seven hundred years to become a timeless classic of Indian poetry. So strong is the poignant self-expression of his poems that it find its resonance even in our own digital age! What kind of self-expression does one come across in Chokha Mela's poems? The entire spectrum of human feelings, doubts, epiphanies, predicaments and realizations of the highest order are the stuff that these poems are made of. What is significant is that all these expressions in these poems are easily the experiences of the common most human being, the Poet's sainthood does not raise its spectre between him and his reader. On every word of these poems, the reader gets the feeling that what is being expressed is exactly their own heart's cry - no matter at which place and in which times they are born! Chokhoba's expression becomes the expression of each of his readers overcoming all the barriers of social, cultural, historical and geographical restrains. This is what has enabled his poems to resound in every age and every place. They have been communicating with their readers the essential human predicament - having to choose between one's lot and one's aspirations!

A revised edition of the prescribed text for "Indian Literature in Translation" course of M.A. (Honours) in English & M.A. (Honours with Research) in English programmes of the University of Mumbai ******************************************** Sant Chokha Mela (13th-14th century) - संत चोखामेळा in Marathi - was born in the Mahar community which lay at the bottom of the caste hierarchy prevalent in the contemporary society. Of course, he was not to have any education even in the remotest sense of the word. Yet, such was the influence of the two founding fathers and other saints of the Varkari Sect that Chokha Mela could compose poetry of the highest order. Poetry that has stood the test of time for last seven hundred years and has become the finest example of the expression of human angst caused by the oppressive societal norms. Each poem by Chokha Mela, or Chokhoba as he was fondly called by his peers, stands testimony to the inhuman treatment that was meted out to large sections of society in the name of religion. Each of his poems is a cry of the bereaved soul that has been deprived of its humanness itself. Each of the poem is a powerful statement against the repression that a handful carried out against the masses. Such is the intensity of these poems that their reader feels the very angst that the Poet must have undergone. Such is the grip that these poems take over the reader's mind that one feels their guts being wrenched, remembering the agony of the Poet's expressions long after the poems have been read and the book kept aside.

"This is a study centered on two artists within one family, but it has also explored a network of patronage among the successive rulers of one small territory subordinate to a major ruling house. It has led us to explore new, previously unrecognized centers of painting (Karera and Gyangarh, for example) and to realize that most powerful ruling courts did not necessarily provide the most informed, or the most productive, patronage. Paintings made for the Chundawats of Devgarh are for more interesting and innovative than the works made contemporaneously in Udaipur. But it is now clear that , even within one family of patrons, tastes can be quite distinct, as can the stylistic affiliations of the artists that various family members employed. It seems clear that Rajasthani painting will richly reward further attention." -- From the Afterword

From the guru of Shri Nisargadatta Maharaj and Shri Ranjit Maharaj, a masterpiece of spiritual teachings from Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj. Contained within this book are newly revised editions of Amrut Laya - Volumes 1 and 2. Also contained within this book is the great work of distinction authored by Shri Siddharameshwar Maharaj titled "Master Key to Self-Realization." Volume 1 of Amrut Laya is comprised of transcribed notes from 50 talks given by Siddharameshwar Maharaj on various themes from Dasbodh. Volume 2 of Amrut Laya consists of notes taken from 88 talks of Siddharameshwar Maharaj where he elaborates on various spiritual principles from three main classic texts; Dasbodh, Yogavasishtha and Eknathi Bhagawat. This text is a great treasure-house of teachings on Spiritual Enlightenment and Self-Knowledge. Siddharameshwar Maharaj gives expositions on many principles of Advaita Vedanta philosophy in a direct and simple language. He offers clear explanations on the nature of the Self [Atman] and Brahman, dispels ignorance with Knowledge [Jnana], and then instructs us to cast off even that Knowledge. Through the power of words Siddharameshwar Maharaj directs the reader to that indescribable Parabrahman which is our True Nature.
