A jargon-free guide to how investment funds operate and have broken free of the financial crises to grow and prosper In One Step Ahead, Timothy Spangler – author of the award-winning Forbes.com blog “Law of the Market” – provides a compelling account of how flexible and entrepreneurial investment firms can prosper in a volatile and rapidly changing financial world. From the Occupy Movement to the purchase of well-known household brands by private equity firms, Spangler investigates how the structures of alternative investment funds enable them to adapt and react nimbly and effectively to today’s shifting economic and financial landscape. Unpicking the debates and putting disputes in context, Spangler answers the difficult questions: Are new regulations sufficient to prevent another global financial crash? Have regulators got to grips with the institutional failings that allowed Bernie Madoff to fleece investors? Instead of a hedge fund problem or even a private equity problem do we simply have a public pension plan problem? One Step Ahead is the essential, jargon-free guide to understanding how private equity and hedge funds drive financial markets and how they have become vital wealth creation vehicles for both private and public investors in the global economy.

With cyclones Wanda and Tracy acting as bookends, the O'Briens swap their comfortable suburban home in Brisbane for a 17.5-foot caravan and the adventures of a lifetime. Travel along with Phoebe, her mum, Stephanie, and the rest of her family, as she takes us along for the ride, travelling across Western New South Wales, into Victoria, through South Australia and across The Nullarbor Plain into Western Australia - and then back home and up the Queensland coast! Although decades have passed since that trip, Phoebe relies on her own memories, flavoured with a little Google research and seasoned with her mother's memories, to describe travelling across the vast country of Australia. In her owns words: "When all is said and done, my memory of 1974 is of a fun-filled, educational trip across the bottom half of this great country I still call home, wherever I happen to live." Perhaps her story can inspire you to live your dream, whatever it is, and wherever it will take you."

China is a large developing economy and it has been deeply involved in globalization since its economic reform and opening-up. Simultaneously, China has seen a significant change in the spatial distribution of economic resources, especially capital and labor. In the recent 10 years, economists have made significant progress in both theoretical and empirical studies on related topics. The book provides an overview on the existing literature and current policy debates on what we have known and what we have misunderstood. This book includes an analytical framework of the New Economic Geography (NEG) with political economy to help us understand China’s regional development issues. The book of 10 chapters is organized into four thematic sections. The first section is a theoretical discussion on the relationship between economic agglomeration and interregional balanced development. The second section is a political economy analysis on regional and urban-rural development. The third section provides a summary on empirical literatures concerning from market segmentation and institutional barriers to production factor mobility. The final section consists of four empirical chapters on the relationship between agglomeration and balance, which is the core of relevant policy debates. The book argues that for China to achieve both efficiency and balance for regional development, China may need to reform its systems which constrain production factors mobility. This book is a valuable reference for readers who are interested in spatial economics and the Chinese economy, especially its regional and urban development.

The Southern Tour written by Jonathan Chatwin and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-18 with History categories.

A History Today Book of the Year 2024 On a freezing January afternoon in 1992, Deng Xiaoping, China's former paramount leader and now a revered elder statesman, set off on a month long trip around China's south in defence of the reforms he had set in motion to open up China's economy and transform the country into the political and economic powerhouse we know today. In this book Jonathan Chatwin pursues the story of Deng's legendary "Southern Tour" and examines its legacies in the country today. Chatwin recounts the crucial debates and disagreements that characterised Chinese politics in the aftermath of the brutal crackdown of the Tiananmen protests of 1989, and the decisive influence of Deng's journey in establishing an economic blueprint for the 1990s and beyond. He explores a nation which has been transformed by large-scale urbanisation - exemplified by the mega-cities of southern China that Deng visited and endorsed - but whose leadership is now conflicted by the pursuit of wealth that Deng legitimized. Drawing on historical and contemporary eyewitness accounts, and the author's own 3000 mile journey in Deng's footsteps, The Southern Tour brings to life the story of China's transformation into a 21st-century superpower.

Practicability Steps Ahead Of Probability written by Purna Pradhan and has been published by Notion Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-22 with Science categories.

Intending to serve the nation further, the author felt motivated after retirement on superannuation from government service on 31.01.2019 to spread the message of science whatever received in life so far. His soft and simple approach to science, literature, Indian culture, and Sri Aurobindo philosophy has provided him interest and energy to innovate this book. Science is the scientific bent of mind in attitude and action any time anywhere. When the mind is incomplete and is in an evolving stage, to control over mind there is conscience which is again evolving. Science is made confined to matter. It is incomplete and needs to be spiritualized. The emergence of life from lifeless (though not proved yet by this limited science), the evolution of species in life, and transformation of human life to the Divine Life with Supramental Consciousness are among a few phases in the journey of life. Art, literature, and culture would be helpful to provide rest and hence to collect energy in case, life lingers on while proceeding on its spiritual path. What has happened so far, what is happening now, and what would happen in the future are all predestined. These can never be calculated by this incomplete human endeavor. So, the author feels convinced to convey the message behind the title, “Practicability: Steps Ahead of Probability” through various articles in the book. “Let us be conscious to catch the outcome of Nature’s deed and try to make use of it to go into the root.”

Winner of the Lionel Gelber Prize National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist An Economist Best Book of the Year | A Financial Times Book of the Year | A Wall Street Journal Book of the Year | A Washington Post Book of the Year | A Bloomberg News Book of the Year | An Esquire China Book of the Year | A Gates Notes Top Read of the Year Perhaps no one in the twentieth century had a greater long-term impact on world history than Deng Xiaoping. And no scholar of contemporary East Asian history and culture is better qualified than Ezra Vogel to disentangle the many contradictions embodied in the life and legacy of China’s boldest strategist. Once described by Mao Zedong as a “needle inside a ball of cotton,” Deng was the pragmatic yet disciplined driving force behind China’s radical transformation in the late twentieth century. He confronted the damage wrought by the Cultural Revolution, dissolved Mao’s cult of personality, and loosened the economic and social policies that had stunted China’s growth. Obsessed with modernization and technology, Deng opened trade relations with the West, which lifted hundreds of millions of his countrymen out of poverty. Yet at the same time he answered to his authoritarian roots, most notably when he ordered the crackdown in June 1989 at Tiananmen Square. Deng’s youthful commitment to the Communist Party was cemented in Paris in the early 1920s, among a group of Chinese student-workers that also included Zhou Enlai. Deng returned home in 1927 to join the Chinese Revolution on the ground floor. In the fifty years of his tumultuous rise to power, he endured accusations, purges, and even exile before becoming China’s preeminent leader from 1978 to 1989 and again in 1992. When he reached the top, Deng saw an opportunity to creatively destroy much of the economic system he had helped build for five decades as a loyal follower of Mao—and he did not hesitate.

The beginning of the 21st century has seen important shifts in mobility cultures around the world, as the West’s media-driven car culture has contrasted with existing local mobilities, from rickshaws in India and minibuses in Africa to cycling in China. In this expansive volume, historian Gijs Mom explores how contemporary mobility has been impacted by social, political, and economic forces on a global scale, as in light of local mobility cultures, the car as an ‘adventure machine’ seems to lose cultural influence in favor of the car’s status character.
