Jahrhunderts, Note: 1.0, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Philosophie), Veranstaltung: Anfänge der wissenschaftlichen Philosophie, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In den Augen Carnaps und vieler anderer logischer Empiristen galt Metaphysik als Disziplin, deren vorgebliche Sätze gänzlich sinnlos seien. Eine Disziplin, die von Sinneserfahrung unabhängige Erkenntnis anstrebe, unvereinbar mit dem wohl zentralsten empiristischen Gedanken: Alles Wissen über die Welt beruhe auf Erfahrung. Auch die Ontologie wurde so zur willkommenen Zielscheibe für Kritik. Diese untersucht im Wesentlichen drei Arten von Fragen. Erstens die nach dem Begriff der Existenz. Was heißt es, dass etwas existiert? Zweitens die, in welche allgemeinsten Arten sich das Inventar unserer Welt einteilen lässt. Gibt es Eigenschaften, Sachverhalte, Propositionen? Und schließlich Fragen nach dem ontologischen Status von Gegenständen, wie etwa ‘Ist alles materiell?’. Auch wenn sich die traditionelle Ontologie zu großen Teilen mit Scheinproblemen beschäftigt haben mag, die Frage, was es gibt, bleibt bestehen. Carnaps Antwort darauf wird oft als ontologischer Pluralismus ausgelegt, demzufolge Theorien mit verschiedenen ontologischen Verpflichtungen nicht zueinander in Konflikt stehen. Eine unorthodoxe, aber dennoch ernst zu nehmende Sicht-weise? Im Folgenden soll, ausgehend vom Aufsatz ‘Empiricism, Semantics, and Ontology’, die Position Carnaps dargelegt werden. Im Anschluss daran wird diskutiert, inwieweit diese, im Lichte der Einwande Quines, plausibel ist.

In this paper I will present two kinds of branching lexical hierarchies: taxonymy and meronymy, which both structure the vocabulary of a language. We will further see that semantic relations, which are defined in terms of logical relations, underlie lexical hierarchies. The problem is that it is not possible to give general, satisfying definitions of suitable test frames for the two kinds, but I will present different approaches that come close to final conclusions. Another aspect I am interested in is the transitivity of taxonymy and meronymy – are they transitive, and if yes, in how far do we have to restrict transitivity? In the final part of my paper I will draw a conclusion, containing a summary of the distinctions and similarities between taxonymy and meronymy.
