Innovation managers and innovation scholars increasingly emphasize the open innovation model, introduced by Henry Chesbrough in 2003. This model postulates that the innovation process should be flexible and cross organizational boundaries, which enables the transfer of knowledge and capabilities between organizations. However, until now, it remained unclear which types of firms apply open innovation, whether it realy raises their performance, and how this can be managed in the best way. This book addresses the important issue how innovative firms profit from external knowledge to improve their innovation performance. Using large scale empirical evidence from the Dutch industry, this book shows that especially Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) and firms from low-tech sectors have increasingly adopted open innovation strategies over the period 1994-2004, and are clearly catching up large and high-tech firms. The results indicate that firms pursuing an open innovation strategy perform better with regard to innovation than firms that innovate exclusively in-house. In contrast to the common opinion that large Mergers & Acquisitions (M&As) are bad for innovation, it turns out that M&As have a positive impact on long-term innovation performance. In times of economic cricis this can be an extra argument for governments to back large scale M&As. Large (medium) high-tech M&As in the life sciences industry were analysed in-depth, to investigate the dynamics of post M&A integration. This book shows the different types of innovation synergies that can be expected from M&As and how they can be realized by systematic post M&A integration. Finally, this book studies how innovation brokers fulfill essential roles in innovation networks of SMEs in the agri-food sector. It provides guidelines for managers in innovation networks to improve the performance of these networks.

The world is witnessing an increase in innovation both in start-ups and in SMEs, and the implementation of innovation is having a substantial impact on the knowledge of the economy. The ability of human beings to create new knowledge can be defined as a basic skill in a global economy, which involves learning as an essential dynamism of the competition. Following this and considering the need for developing standards and guidelines for innovation, organizations have been working on developing and updating a set of documents to help the innovators and the innovative companies work better. Knowledge-Driven Innovation in Start-Ups and SMEs: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a collection of innovative research on the methods and applications of standardization and guideline creation in business innovation, such as those implemented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). While highlighting topics including business analysis, market research, and intellectual property, this book is ideally designed for market researchers, business professionals, academicians, and students seeking current research on innovative processes and approaches for organizations.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,3, University of Applied Sciences Münster, language: English, abstract: In earlier days, creating innovation took mainly place behind closed doors in the R&D department of a company. However, over the course of time, globalisation opened doors to new technologies, to the global exchange of knowledge, increased the mobility of labour as well as the number of competitors in the market. The innovation environment has transformed and nowadays, ongoing innovation is a critical factor for companies to survive in the extremely competitive business environment. When hearing innovation, many people directly think about the outcome after a creative session within a company. However, reality is slightly different and innovation appears not simply in a sudden moment and actually requires sometimes more than one party to come to a new idea. Adding more complexity to this issue, many companies struggle to afford these innovation activities on their own. Consequently, many companies make use of collaborations in form of open innovation to cope with the high pressure for ongoing innovation. Vitasek (2015) concludes that innovation and collaboration is no longer an “either-or” approach and already converged into a stabile construct over the past years. Some journals even state that ‘sharing ideas and processes side by side within the same facility is often no longer an option’ (Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 2011). Especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) with lower Research and Development (R&D) budget and less capacity for new innovations do struggle with increased complexity which is even more intense in the business-to-business (B2B) sector. SMEs must consider to reposition themselves to make strategic use of open innovation as an essential method for their survival. In this context the question arises what are opportunities and risks of open innovation for SMEs in the B2B sector and which open innovation model enhances the innovative power in SMEs most efficiently? This research question will be solved throughout the paper: First, some literature will be reviewed to create background knowledge of the constructs. Second, opportunities and risks of different open innovation mechanisms will be weighed and finally, the most efficient one(s) will be concluded.
