This book investigates the evolution of economic discourse from fully specialised texts towards popularisation. Popularising texts on economics and business-related matters has hitherto been a neglected and under-explored area of enquiry, and yet it deserves attention and study on account of the new fascinating insights it offers into specialised language and discourse. The present book explores this under-researched area via the qualitative analysis of a modern genre, namely newspapers on the web. In particular, it scrutinises authentic extracts principally drawn from The Guardian Online in order to show, on the one hand, the popularising effect of the Internet on business and economic discourse, and, on the other hand, the realistic vocabulary currently used in economic and professional jargon. The introductory chapter discusses the popularisation of specialised text at large and of new media discourse in particular. It describes this phenomenon as a ‘reformulation process’ whereby specialised knowledge is transformed into everyday or lay knowledge, and also as a ‘recontextualisation process’ whereby popularisation discourse is adapted to the appropriateness conditions of the new genres and to the constraints of the media employed. Popularisation, it is claimed, implies relevant changes not only in terms of terminological simplifications and adaptations to the public’s prior knowledge, but also in terms of the roles undertaken by the participants in the communicative event. The remaining chapters are organised into thematic units whose topics range from global economy, economic growth, and financial crisis to business management, employment, and sales. This part provides an in-depth investigation of various topics related to the economics and business worlds, combined with systematic explanations of linguistic phenomena at various language levels, from morphology to syntax, semantics, and the lexicon. In this book, the lexicon of ESP is offered in a fresh, less formal style, which will attract younger and non-expert readers alongside experts and professionals. The book is of considerable interest to students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, lecturers, professors, entrepreneurs, specialists, and to those scholars who investigate ESP and its popularisation.

The face of international trade is continuing to change rapidly. But while much attention is focused on where, post-Cancun, any new international negotiations under the auspices of the WTO may go, there are other developments of potentially equal importance. The United States, in particular, is prioritizing new regional trade agreements. This book focuses on the most ambitious of these negotiations -- the Free Trade Area of the Americas Agreement, which is due to be completed in 2005. This US initiative aims to replicate the NAFTA Agreement (which has bound the US, Canada and Mexico into a free trade area since 1994) across all 34 countries of South and North America (bar Cuba). This huge continental market is to be built around US-defined notions of free trade and protection of foreign investment, but will exclude the free movement of labour. This volume explains the origins and process of the negotiations -- both the complicated multilateral discussions and the bilateral agreements that have already been drafted. It explains in detail: * US strategy. * The structures and procedures of the Agreement. * The possible consequences for South America, including: Mercosur; Brazil, as Latin America's largest economy; and the region's many small economies, which cannot possibly compete on a level playing field with the US behemoth. * The wider implications of the FTAA for the global trading system, in particular for China, Japan and the EU. Ce volume est né d’un partenariat scientifique italo-français qui a vu la participation de l’ISIT (Grande École de management et de communication interculturels) et de l’Università degli Studi di Milano, représentée par le département de Scienze della Mediazione Linguistica e di Studi Interculturali (SMELSI). Lancé en novembre 2017, ce projet de collaboration a eu pour objectif la mise en place d’activités scientifiques conjointes, définies sur la base des intérêts de recherche des deux institutions. Le premier résultat de notre collaboration a été représenté par l’organisation de deux journées d’études au croisement de deux domaines de compétences réciproques: l’analyse du discours et la traduction. La première journée a été consacrée à l’analyse de discours institutionnels et médiatiques et a eu lieu le 10 avril 2018 auprès du département SMELSI de Milan. La deuxième, centrée sur la traduction de ces genres de discours, s’est tenue le 25 mai 2018 à l’ISIT (Paris). Nous avons donc souhaité réunir les actes des deux journées d’études au sein de ce volume afin de mettre en lumière la richesse des productions discursives et traductionnelles qui voient le jour, à l’heure actuelle, dans les différents contextes institutionnels et médiatiques. Nous entendons encourager le dialogue entre différents spécialistes du langage afin de mettre en valeur les éléments de complémentarité et de différence qui existent entre l’analyse du discours et la traductologie. Nous espérons, ainsi, pouvoir contribuer à l’identification de nouvelles pistes de recherche interdisciplinaires.

Sono anche proposti due casi di studio che descrivono differenti strategie di analisi: una più orientata ai contenuti, nello specifico l’esclusione sociale; l’altra all’applicazione dell’analisi statistica dei dati testuali, per ricavare informazioni da corpora provenienti dal web.
