This book describes the electromagnetic theory for the propagating modes of dielectric guides with the objective of understanding the applications of these guides to a telecommunication system. Every book on classical electromagnetism introduces the metallic waveguides as an example of application of the Maxwell equations with boundary conditions. A few books summarily describe the dielectric guides. Nevertheless, following the applications of these guides in the form of optical fibers, it has become essential for a course on applied electromagnetism to cover this theory and emphasize on the dispersion minimisation which allows an extreme bandwidth. The dispersionless “solitonic” solution is introduced to inform the reader on this new optical pulse shape which may soon ensure transoceanic communications. The study of the minimisation of the waveguide dispersion leads us, by means of several calculated frames, to the weakly-guiding condition. This essential condition for a large bandwidth fiber leads us to the introduction of the practical LP modes. In order to initiate the reader into integrated optics components, the electromagnetic solution for two coupled planar waveguides is treated in an appendix. Another appendix allows the reader to go through a quick initiation of the geometrical optics theory (essential for the study of graded-index fiber), being the iconal equation and the ray equation starting from Maxwell equation under the short wavelength approximation.

Optical Fibers describes the theoretical basis—electromagnetic theories—of transmission characteristics of optical fibers. The material and fabrication technologies are not described systematically, but only briefly where necessary to assist comprehension of the transmission characteristics. This book comprises 11 chapters, with an introductory chapter that discusses such topics as optical communications before the advent of optical fibers, a technical background of the subject matter, and a summary of its history. Succeeding chapters then discuss basic concepts and equations; ray theory of optical fibers; wave theory of uniform-core fibers; wave theory of nonuniform-core fibers; and classification and comparison of various analysis methods. Other chapters cover optimum refractive-index profile of optical fibers; optical fibers having structural fluctuations; measurement of refractive-index profile of optical fibers; measurement of transmission characteristics of optical fibers; and finally, some concluding remarks. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of electronic engineering and electrical communications.

This book is a first-year graduate text on electromagnetic fields and waves. It is the translated and revised edition of the Chinese version with the same title published by the Publishing House of Electronic Industry (PHEI) of China in 1994. The text is based on the graduate course lectures on "Advanced Elec trodynamics" given by the authors at Tsinghua University. More than 300 students from the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Depart ment of Applied Physics have taken this course during the last decade. Their particular fields are microwave and millimeterwave theory and technology, physical electronics, optoelectronics and engineering physics. As the title of the book shows, the texts and examples in the book concentrate mainly on electromagnetic theory related to microwaves and optoelectronics, or light wave technology. However, the book can also be used as an intermediate-level text or reference book on electromagnetic fields and waves for students and scientists engaged in research in neighboring fields.

This text is intended to provide an in-depth, self-contained, treatment of optical waveguide theory. We have attempted to emphasize the underlying physical processes, stressing conceptual aspects, and have developed the mathematical analysis to parallel the physical intuition. We also provide comprehensive supplementary sections both to augment any deficiencies in mathematical background and to provide a self-consistent and rigorous mathematical approach. To assist in. understanding, each chapter con centrates principally on a single idea and is therefore comparatively short. Furthermore, over 150 problems with complete solutions are given to demonstrate applications of the theory. Accordingly, through simplicity of approach and numerous examples, this book is accessible to undergraduates. Many fundamental topics are presented here for the first time, but, more importantly, the material is brought together to give a unified treatment of basic ideas using the simplest approach possible. To achieve such a goal required a maturation of the subject, and thus the text was intentionally developed over a protracted period of the last 10 years.

Provides a broad and easily assimilated introduction to fiber communications, requiring no more mathematical knowledge than needed for a bachelor's degree in physics, chemistry, or engineering. Reviews necessary mathematics, introducing electromagnetic theory and dielectric waveguides; presents underlying theories of propagation in multimode step index and graded index fibers, emphasizing physical models in practical situations. Covers mode coupling, the performance of joint sections, and mode and material dispersion. Includes detailed discussions of techniques for the preparation of optical fibers, factors, controlling their loss and bandwidth, and techniques for measuring, jointing, and splicing. Also includes optical fiber cables, their design, materials used in their construction, and special strength properties. Closes by examining the optical receiver and the special properties that it shows as a result of the photon or shot noise associated with the optical signal, followed by some simple modelling to see how fibers interact and can be optimized within an optical fiber system.
