A sine qua non of control system development for modern sewer networks is the preservation of the water system around a network’s outflow(s). Several approaches have been proposed for the optimisation of sewage control and Optimal Real-time Control of Sewer Networks provides a comparative synthesis of a central sewer network flow control based on two of these: nonlinear-optimal and multivariable-feedback control. Testing and comparison of these protocols are made on the basis of their control results for the large-scale sewer network located around the river Obere Iller in Bavaria. The control strategies implemented within this network are based on this study. From the selection of possible methods of control and moving to the implementation of those methods in a real sewer system, this monograph will be invaluable to control and civil engineers working in sewage flow and wastewater treatment and of interest to academics wishing to see how their ideas on optimal control work out when practically applied.

Control of Integral Processes with Dead Time provides a unified and coherent review of the various approaches devised for the control of integral processes, addressing the problem from different standpoints. In particular, the book treats the following topics: How to tune a PID controller and assess its performance; How to design a two-degree-of-freedom control scheme in order to deal with both the set-point following and load disturbance rejection tasks; How to modify the basic Smith predictor control scheme in order to cope with the presence of an integrator in the process; and how to address the presence of large process dead times. The methods are presented sequentially, highlighting the evolution of their rationale and implementation and thus clearly characterising them from both academic and industrial perspectives.

The series Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage technology transfer in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. New theory, new controllers, actuators, sensors, new industrial processes, computer methods, new applications, new philosophies , new challenges. Much of this development work resides in industrial reports, feasibility study papers and the reports of advanced collaborative projects. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of such new work in all aspects of industrial control for wider and rapid dissemination. Almost all physical systems are nonlinear and the success of linear control techniques depends on the extent of the nonlinear system behaviour and the careful attention given to switching linear controllers through the range of nonlinear system operations. In many industrial and process-control applications, good engineering practice, linear control systems and classical PID control can give satisfactory performance because the process nonlinearity is mild and the control system performance specification is not particularly demanding; however, there are other industrial system applications where the requirement for high-performance control can only be achieved if nonlinear control design techniques are used. Thus, in some industrial and technological domains there is a strong justification for more applications of nonlinear methods. One prevailing difficulty with nonlinear control methods is that they are not so easily understood nor are they easy to reduce to formulaic algorithms for routine application.

This book emphasizes the application of Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) gain scheduling techniques to the control of wind energy conversion systems. This reformulation of the classical problem of gain scheduling allows straightforward design procedure and simple controller implementation. From an overview of basic wind energy conversion, to analysis of common control strategies, to design details for LPV gain-scheduled controllers for both fixed- and variable-pitch, this is a thorough and informative monograph.

This book covers all the steps from identification of operations and resources to the transformation of virtual models into real-world algorithms. The matrix-based approach presented here is a solution to the real-time application of control in discrete event systems and flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), and offers a sound practical basis for the design of controllers for manufacturing systems.

Adaptive Voltage Control in Power Systems, a self-contained blend of theory and novel application, offers in-depth treatment of such adaptive control schemes. Coverage moves from power-system-modelling problems through illustrations of the main adaptive control systems, including self-tuning, model-reference and nonlinearities compensation to a detailed description of design methods: Kalman filtering, parameter-identification algorithms and discrete-time controller design are all represented. Case studies address applications issues in the implementation of adaptive voltage control.

While the planning and design of urban drainage systems (URS) has long been the domain of civil engineers, it is only recently that information on the operation of these systems has been available. An increasing number of UDS are being equipped with sensors and data collection systems, and the data gained are being used to develop appropriate control systems to improve the use of existing systems and increase UDS performance to the maximum. In 1986 the IAWPRC/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Storm Drainage commissioned a group of engineers and scientists to study the technical developments in the field of real-time control of UDS. The result is this state-of-the-art report, an important reference for engineers planning new or refurbishing old UDS. Scientific and Technical Report No. 2 This title is Out of Print and unavailable to order at this time.

Passivity and associated stability conditions form one of the cornerstones in control theory and have begun to be applied in process control. In this book, passivity-based developments in all areas of control theory are addressed systematically for the first time. The emphasis is placed on real results that add insight. Case studies illustrate applications in all the main chapters. MATLAB® routines and a library of functions that implement the methods developed in the book can be downloaded from springer.com.

focussed on the key steps in soft sensor design: data selection; model structure selection and model validation, respectively. Extensions to the basic steps of soft sensor design, namely soft sensor performance enhancement and the modifications needed to facilitate different industrial process applications follow in Chapter 7 and 8, respectively. Widening the applications range and role of soft sensors to fault detection and sensor validation configurations is dealt with in Chapter 9. A great strength of Soft Sensors for Monitoring and Control of Industrial Processes is the use, throughout the text, of a set of industrial case studies to demonstrate the successes and drawbacks of the different methods used to create soft sensor models. A number of different methods may be used in each separate step of the soft sensor design process and the industrial case studies are often used to provide explicit comparisons of the performance of these methods. The industrial control and process engineer will find these comparison exercises invaluable illustrations of the sort of results that might be found in industrial applications. The monograph also highlights the importance of using knowledge from industrial experts and from the existing industrial process literature. This is an important aspect of industrial control that is not very widely acknowledged or taught in control courses. Most industrial processes have already generated a significant experimental knowledge base and the control engineer should develop ways of tapping into this valuable resource when designing industrial control schemes.

Windup In Control written by Peter Hippe and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-03 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Actuator saturation is probably the most frequent nonlinearity encountered in control applications and causes "controller" windup and "plant" windup calling for distinct remedies. Peter Hippe presents antiwindup solutions for stable and unstable single-input-single-output and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The solutions use only standard tools for the investigation of linear systems – state equations, transfer functions, etc. Less rigorous solutions which guarantee improved performance but without strict proof of stability are also demonstrated. Maintenance of MIMO system directionality and bumpless transfer are included and the developments in control methods are always supplemented by easily repeated numerical examples. Academics doing control-related research and engineers working in the process industries will find this book an extremely useful overview of systematic windup prevention for all kinds of systems. It also has valuable insights to offer the graduate student of control.
