Organisational psychology, also know as industrial and organisational (I/O) psychology, is a dynamic and pervasive field within the general discipline of psychology. Organisational psychology focuses on people attitudes, values and behaviours in the domain of work, especially within organisational settings, such as private businesses, government organisations, the military and so on. The field covers a very wide range of issues, ranging from the selection of individual people for specific jobs through to the management of large-scale organisational change and development. Organisational psychologists therefore contribute to a broad array of processes and functions within organisations. While many textbooks relating to organisational psychology are available, almost all of these have been developed in either the United States or the United Kingdom, and hence refer to conditions applying predominantly in those countries. Consequently, although much of the theory and research described in these texts is of a general nature, there is some lack of direct 'practical relevance' to Australian and New Zealand conditions. Furthermore, the considerable amount of research conducted within these two countries is frequently overlooked in other international texts. The purpose of this textbook is therefore, to provide a coverage of essential topics in the field of organisational psychology, as far as possible to introduce research illustrations from Australia and New Zealand, as well as international research in each topic area, and incorporate Australian and New Zealand examples and case studies to illustrate the local relevance of theory and research. Each chapter contains a 'practice illustration' and a case study relating to either Australia or New Zealand. Questions for discussion at the end of each chapter will focus on issues that are directly relevant to students in these two countries.

Psychology in Australia: Achievements & Prospects is an assessment of the achievements and prospects of the field of psychology in Australia. Issues related to teaching and research are examined, and research areas that are flourishing, as well as those that are floundering or neglected, are highlighted. The main emphasis is on fields of endeavor in which psychology is applied to individual, social, and organizational issues. This book is comprised of 22 chapters and begins with an introduction to the first phases of teaching and practice of psychology in Australia, followed by a historical overview of applied psychology in the country. Subsequent chapters explore the influence of culture on Australian psychology; psychological research in universities and colleges, in clinical and counseling psychology, and in health education; and the training and education of psychologists in Australia. Some applications of psychology are also discussed, along with private practice in Australian psychology. The final chapter focuses on Australian psychologists in the world context. This monograph should be of interest to students and general readers as well as to psychologists themselves.

Organisational Psychology: Revisiting the Classic Studies critically reflects upon 14 studies by researchers such as Gilbreth, French and Raven, Greenberg, and Schein, that have long been considered foundational. Written and edited by leading scholars, this book invites you to think about the limitations of the classic studies, put theory into practice, and consider, in-depth, the lasting impact of these key studies on the field today. Revisiting the Classic Studies is a series of texts that introduces readers to the studies in psychology that changed the way we think about core topics in the discipline today. It provokes students to ask more interesting and challenging questions about the field by encouraging a deeper level of engagement both with the details of the studies themselves and with the nature of their contribution. Edited by leading scholars in their field and written by researchers at the cutting edge of these developments, the chapters in each text provide details of the original works and their theoretical and empirical impact, and then discuss the ways in which thinking and research has advanced in the years since the studies were conducted. Niklas K. Steffens is Director of the Centre for Business and Organisational Psychology and Associate Professor at The University of Queensland. Floor Rink is Professor of Organisational Behaviour at the University of Groningen. Michelle K. Ryan is the inaugural Director of the Global Institute of Women’s Leadership, and Professor of Social and Organisational Psychology at The Australian National University.

As the challenge of conceptualising, designing, and implementing fulfilling and productive humane workplaces within the emerging 4th and 5th Industrial Revolutions becomes more apparent -- it is clear that the future remit of every Industrial Organisational Psychologist will be rising to the task of integrating people and technology. Industrial-Organisational Psychology (IOP) as a science and practice embraces the psychology of work, the working person, the workplace, and the harmony between these elements -- yet as we rapidly approach a digital era of work, how can this harmony be retained? This book explores the workplaces of the future through an 18-month research operation involving five research teams with their respective leaders, six research associates, two assistants and the head of the project, Professor Theo Veldsman. Using emerging trends associated with the unfolding of the fourth and fifth Industrial Revolutions, Prof Theo Veldsman and his team re-imagined IOP in all its facets - intent, focus, content, mode of delivery, and capabilities - to realign with the future workplace. -- Publisher's description.
