How can we study organizations from a discursive perspective? What are the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of each perspective on organizational discourse? To what extent do discourse and communication constitute the organizational world? This accessible book addresses these questions by showing how classical organizational themes, objects and questions can be illuminated from various discursive perspectives. Six approaches are presented and explained: semiotics, rhetoric, speech act theory, conversation analysis/ethnomethodology, narrative analysis, and critical discourse analysis. These six perspectives are then mobilized throughout the book to study coordination and organizing, organizational culture and identity, as well as negotiation, decision making and conflicts in the context of meetings. The unifying thread of this volume is the communicative constitutive approach (CCO) to organizations, as implicitly or explicitly advocated by the great majority of organizational discourse analysts and theorists today. Throughout Organizational Discourse, this theme will help readers distinguish between discursive perspectives and other approaches to organizational life, and to understand how discourse matters in organizations.

Work on organizational discourse studies has mushroomed in the past several decades, spanning various disciplines and encompassing a wide array of organizational topics. In contrast to micro-level studies of individual language and communication, Organizational Discourse Studies, a three-volume collection, focuses on discourse at organizational levels and is an invaluable resource to anyone interested in how methods of discourse analysis can be applied to gain insight into the workings of an organization. Assembled and introduced by an international editorial team of leading scholars in the area, each volume builds on the foundations of the last. Volume one traces the evolution and current state of theoretical developments in organizational discourse studies, showing how its methodological foundations have evolved with the social sciences as a whole. Volume two teaches the reader the key techniques used in discourse analysis in organizations, and volume three provides examples of empirical studies where these methods have created an understanding of specific organizational phenomena, including emotion, humor, change and resistance.

It critically evaluates the contributions of various disciplines and defines organizational discourse as a subject area. The chapters in the first section, Talk and Action, explore the relationship between discourse, action and interaction and their impact on organizational structure and behaviour. Stories and Sensemaking focuses on the analytical potential of the `story′ as a means of illuminating the ways in which organizational members make sense of their experience of organization. Discourse and Organization includes contributions which demonstrate the fundamental significance of linguistic uSAGE and discursive construction to the ontologies of `organization′. This work supplies a concrete definition of Corporate Public Discourse, an idea that has always lacked true character. It explores how leading corporations use their own special language to define their cultures. The authors take this language, once considered a mere embellishment of speech, and use it to explore the inner workings of world-renowned organizations. This book bridges the gap between organizational studies and linguistics by analyzing the communications of today's top companies. The book describes a weekly Saturday morning meeting at Wal-Mart, evaluates IBM's commitment to success, and looks into the social role of high-caliber CEOs. Broken into seven parts, including management, media, and analysis, the study efficiently frames the importance of corporate communication.

This collection illustrates the variety of organizational phenomena that might be studied and the range of epistemological and methodological approaches that might be used in discourse analysis techniques.
