Companies across a wide range of industries are affected by the increasing relevance of digital innovation and their related organizing challenges. Against this background, it is unclear how this influences the role of the established IT function in incumbent firms. Although digital innovations require IT-related knowledge and capabilities, the corporate IT function seems unprepared with regards to their organizational structure and capabilities. Therefore, this cumulative dissertation comprises four individual studies at the intersection of digital innovation and the IT function. These studies mainly address the following research goals: (1) to understand how the increasing prevalence of digital innovation is changing the IT function’s organizing logics, and (2) to understand how the IT function can contribute to the effective and efficient development of digital innovations. On the one hand, the thesis shows that digital innovation projects can trigger new value commitments of IT functions regarding their organizing logic. On the other hand, the results implicate that IT functions require sufficient organizational support and decision rights, as well as organizational agility and ambidexterity, to successfully contribute to their firms’ digital innovation activities.

Organizing in the Digital Age draws on a process-oriented perspective to understand the pervasiveness of digitalization in organizations, and contemporary society. Ongoing and multiple crises, whether it be the pandemic, the economy, or climate change, have magnified the importance of digital technologies in processes of organizing and accelerated the role of digital transformation in work-life. The central themes underpinning the chapters in this book concern the becoming of digital work, the conceptualization of agency in digital work, and the role of temporality in contemporary organizing. The increasing entanglement of digital technologies and work (accelerated through the Covid-19 pandemic) have fuelled interest in the need for understanding digital work happening at scale, while also examining and exposing inequalities. The concern with the role of agency in digital work reaches new heights when we consider the rapid and pervasive development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and algorithmic control, and raises concerns about the ethical and moral dimension of agency. Methodologically, the book explores the use of digital trace data as a resource in the study of organizing processes. While digital traces offer unprecedented access to temporally evolving activity, they are nevertheless limited in their ability to represent phenomena. In essence, 'processual shadows' visible from digital data traces may be difficult to interpret without in-person observational data such as ethnography. Theoretical approaches around performativity are discussed in terms of the impact (or not) of innovative digital technologies, such as blockchain in organizations, while routine dynamics and pragmatism are drawn on in providing a processual understanding of the why and how of IT computer workarounds within organizational work practices.

Information Systems Research: Relevant Theory and Informed Practice comprises the edited proceedings of the WG8.2 conference, "Relevant Theory and Informed Practice: Looking Forward from a 20-Year Perspective on IS Research," which was sponsored by IFIP and held in Manchester, England, in July 2004. The conference attracted a record number of high-quality manuscripts, all of which were subjected to a rigorous reviewing process in which four to eight track chairs, associate editors, and reviewers thoughtfully scrutinized papers by the highly regarded as well as the newcomers. No person or idea was considered sacrosanct and no paper made it through this process unscathed. All authors were asked to revise the accepted papers, some more than once; thus, good papers got better. With only 29 percent of the papers accepted, these proceedings are significantly more selective than is typical of many conference proceedings. This volume is organized in 7 sections, with 33 full research papers providing panoramic views and reflections on the Information Systems (IS) discipline followed by papers featuring critical interpretive studies, action research, theoretical perspectives on IS research, and the methods and politics of IS development. Digital innovation often leads to far-reaching changes in the competitive landscape, and for incumbent firms means both opportunity and risk. It is understood as generating new combinations of digital and physical components to create novel products and is characterized by convergence as well as generativity. In comparison to traditional product innovation, it hence comes with an unprecedented level of complexity and dynamism. In order to exploit the opportunities and remain competitive, incumbents need to break away from proven innovation paths and develop new capabilities specific to digital innovation. However, extant research has barely dealt with the question of how incumbent firms actually are and should be approaching digital innovation. Using a dynamic capabilities lens, this dissertation examines which processes, procedures, organizational structures, and guiding principles, i.e., microfoundations of dynamic capabilities, enable incumbent firms to effectively carry out digital innovation. Based on 31 in-depth expert interviews with senior representatives of both incumbent and management consulting firms as well as on complementary secondary data sources, this study identifies eight key microfoundations of dynamic capabilities in the context of digital innovation: (1) identifying opportunity areas for digital innovation, (2) leveraging customer insights for digital innovation idea generation, (3) evaluating and prioritizing digital innovation ideas, (4) organizing for digital innovation development, (5) managing digital innovation development projects, (6) commercializing digital innovation, (7) building a new digital culture, and (8) reconfiguring relevant support functions. Implementing these microfoundations helps incumbent firms to effectively carry out digital innovation, thereby creating and sustaining a competitive advantage. This study contributes to literature on digital innovation as well as dynamic capabilities.
