Organotransition Metal Chemistry: A Mechanistic Approach describes a mechanistic approach to the study of the chemistry of organotransition metals. Organotransition metals are discussed in relation to their reactions with specific functional groups or types of compounds rather than by metals. Topics covered include the formation of hydrogen and carbon bonds to transition metals; reactions of transition metal δ- and π-bonded derivatives; and addition and elimination reactions of olefinic compounds. This book is comprised of 10 chapters and begins with a historical overview of organotransition metal chemistry, together with the unique chemistry of transition metals and mechanisms of ligand replacements. The following chapters discuss the methods of preparation of hydrido complexes and carbon-transition metal bonds; homogeneous hydrogenation reactions; isomerization, dimerization, oligomerization, and polymerization of olefins; and reactions of dienes, trienes, and tetraenes with transition metal compounds. Transition metal reactions with acetylenes and carbon monoxide as well as organic carbonyl compounds are also examined. This monograph should be of value to organic chemists as well as students and researchers of organic chemistry.

Polyolefin is a major industry that is important for our economy and impacts every aspect of our lives. The discovery of new transition metal-based catalysts is one of the driving forces for the further advancement of this field. Whereas the classical heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts and homogeneous early transition metal metallocene catalysts remain the workhorses of the polyolefin industry, in roughly the last decade, tremendous progress has been made in developing non-metallocene-based olefin polymerization catalysts. Particularly, the discovery of late transition metal-based olefin polymerization catalysts heralds a new era for this field. These late transition metal complexes not only exhibit high activities rivaling their early metal counterparts, but more importantly they offer unique properties for polymer architectural control and copolymerization with polar olefins. In this book, the most recent major breakthroughs in the development of new olefin polymerization catalysts, including early metal metallocene and non-metallocene complexes and late transition metal complexes, are discussed by leading experts. The authors highlight the most important discoveries in catalysts and their applications in designing new polyolefin-based functional materials.

Although organotransition metal chemistry has been developing rapidly over the past 20 years, it is only recently that applications of transition metal complexes to organic synthesis have started to be exploited. This unique book provides an introduction to organometallic chemistry for chemists who have little or no experience in the field, describes the work that has already been done using organotransition metal complexes for synthesis, and indicates to organic and organometallic chemists the type of synthetic problems that can be solved using organometallic compounds. It covers all major advances that have been made in this rapidly expanding area of chemistry, including not only reactions that already have well established applications for synthesis but also many recently discovered potentially useful reactions, providing a survey of recent literature.

This book contains a series of papers and abstracts from the 7th Industry-University Cooperative Chemistry Program symposium held in the spring of 1989 at Texas A&M University. The symposium was larger than previous IUCCP symposia since it also celebrated the 25 years that had elapsed since the initial discovery by F. A. Cotton and his co-workers of the existence of metal-metal quadruple bonds. Cotton's discovery demonstrated that multiple bonding in inorganic systems is not governed by the same constraints observed in organic chemistry regarding s and p orbital involvement. The d orbitals are involved in the multiple bonding description. The quadruple bond involves considerable d orbital overlap between adjacent metal centers. Part I of this series of papers focuses upon the impact of this discovery and describes further contributions to the development of the field. Multiple metal-metal bonding now is known to permeate broad areas of transition metal chemistry. The understanding of metal-metal bonding that developed as a result of the discovery of multiple metal-metal bonding awakened a new chemistry involving metal clusters. Clusters were defined by Cotton to be species containing metal-metal bonding. Clusters in catalysis therefore seemed a logical grouping of papers in this symposium. Clusters play an every increasing role in the control of chemical reactions. Part II of this book describes some of the interesting new developments in this field. In Part III the papers examine the role clusters play in describing and understanding solid state materials.

Carbon Monoxide in Organic Synthesis A thoroughly up-to-date overview of carbonylation reactions in the presence of carbon monoxide In Carbon Monoxide in Organic Synthesis: Carbonylation Chemistry, expert researcher and chemist Bartolo Gabriele delivers a robust summary of the most central advances in the field of carbonylation reactions in the presence of carbon monoxide. Beginning with a brief introduction on the importance of carbon monoxide as a building block in modern organic synthesis, the author goes on to describe metal-catalyzed carbonylations utilizing iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and manganese. Descriptions of palladium, ruthenium, and rhodium-catalyzed reactions follow, as do discussions of metal-free carbonylation processes. The book is organized by metal to make the book useful as a guide for researchers from both academia and industry whose work touches on the direct synthesis of carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acid derivatives, and heterocycles. It aims to stimulate further discoveries in this rapidly developing field. Readers will also enjoy: A thorough introduction to carbonylations promoted by first row transition metal catalysts, including cobalt-catalyzed and nickel-catalyzed carbonylations An exploration of carbonylations promoted by second row transition metal catalysts, including ruthenium-, rhodium-, palladium(0)-, and palladium (II)-catalyzed carbonylations Practical discussions of miscellaneous carbonylation reactions, including carbonylations promoted by third row transition metal catalysts and metal-free carbonylation processes Perfect for catalytic and organic chemists, Carbon Monoxide in Organic Synthesis: Carbonylation Chemistry is also an indispensable resource for chemists working with organometallics and industrial chemists seeking a summary of important processes used to synthesize value-added products.
