Sulla base di una grande mole di documenti d’archivio prodotta dall’amministrazione familiare questo libro esamina il caso dei feudi dei principi Colonna nello Stato pontificio ponendo in primo piano la questione dei diritti e delle giurisdizioni baronali. In contrasto con la tesi storiografica, a lungo prevalente, secondo cui la politica antifeudale dei papi del Rinascimento avrebbe precocemente privato i baroni romani dei loro poteri reali, la ricerca mostra come i discendenti di Martino V dispongano ancora nel Settecento di una vastissima gamma di diritti, esenzioni e prerogative, grazie a cui esercitano il dominio economico e politico sulle loro terre godendo di un’ampia autonomia nei confronti del governo pontificio. Senza trascurare le modalità concrete di esercizio del potere, lo studio si sofferma sui suoi aspetti simbolici e ideologici, in particolare su quelli legati alle funzioni di paternalistica protezione che si affermano con particolare forza nel governo della giustizia. L’analisi approfondita dei processi criminali del feudo di Marino – una tipologia documentaria ancora poco studiata – restituisce la cura che i Colonna dedicano a un esercizio della giurisdizione finalizzato alla conservazione dell’ordine nel feudo, caratterizzato dal bilanciamento attento fra rigore e clemenza e dalla contiguità con la sfera della soluzione negoziale dei conflitti. Questo complesso di poteri è sottoposto alle pressioni crescenti delle società locali e dell’amministrazione statale, e tuttavia i Colonna riescono a difenderlo con successo fino alla fine del secolo, quando l’arrivo delle armate francesi innesca il processo che condurrà, al termine dell’esperienza napoleonica, all’estinzione delle giurisdizioni feudali. Nel panorama dell’aristocrazia romana i Colonna costituiscono un caso per diversi aspetti eccezionale: i loro ‘stati’, particolarmente ampi e coesi, rappresentano il retaggio dei secoli precedenti che hanno visto la famiglia esercitare un ruolo politico e militare di primo piano sulla scena italiana ed europea, ma l’ombra del loro dominio si avverte fin oltre la dissoluzione formale della feudalità, dando vita ancora in pieno Ottocento a conflitti e contese che mostrano quanto sia difficile per le comunità recidere i legami di dipendenza che le uniscono al barone.

The emergence of the state in Europe is a topic that has engaged historians since the establishment of the discipline of history. Yet the primary focus of has nearly always been to take a top-down approach, whereby the formation and consolidation of public institutions is viewed as the outcome of activities by princes and other social elites. Yet, as the essays in this collection show, such an approach does not provide a complete picture. By investigating the importance of local and individual initiatives that contributed to state building from the late middle ages through to the nineteenth century, this volume shows how popular pressure could influence those in power to develop new institutional structures. By not privileging the role of warfare and of elite coercion for state building, it is possible to question the traditional top-down model and explore the degree to which central agencies might have been more important for state representation than for state practice. The studies included in this collection treat many parts of Europe and deal with different phases in the period between the late middle ages and the nineteenth century. Beginning with a critical review of state historiography, the introduction then sets out the concept of 'empowering interactions' which is then explored in the subsequent case studies and a number of historiographical, methodological and theoretical essays. Taken as a whole this collection provides a fascinating platform to reconsider the relationships between top-down and bottom-up processes in the history of the European state.
