Traditional, secular, and fundamentalist—all three categories are contested, yet in their contestation they shape our sensibilities and are mutually implicated, the one with the others. This interplay brings to the foreground more than ever the question of what it means to think and live as Tradition. The Orthodox theologians of the twentieth century, in particular, have emphasized Tradition not as a dead letter but as a living presence of the Holy Spirit. But how can we discern Tradition as living discernment from fundamentalism? What does it mean to live in Tradition when surrounded by something like the “secular”? These essays interrogate these mutual implications, beginning from the understanding that whatever secular or fundamentalist may mean, they are not Tradition, which is historical, particularistic, in motion, ambiguous and pluralistic, but simultaneously not relativistic. Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject Politics - Region: Russia, grade: 1,0, University of Wrocław (Institute of Political Science), course: Religious Fundamentalism in the Contemporary World, language: English, abstract: The text discusses the role and influence of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in contemporary Russia, particularly since the collapse of the Soviet Union. It highlights the significant increase in the number of Russians identifying with Orthodoxy, which now surpasses two-thirds of the population, reflecting a revival of religious identity and national pride. Emphasizing the connection between the Russian Orthodox Church and the preservation of Russia's historical greatness, the text explores the church's role in upholding the memory of past achievements, including military victories, literary traditions, space exploration, and the resilience of the Russian people. It notes the high levels of trust in the church and the military compared to other institutions within Russia. The paper aims to analyze the ROC as a religious fundamentalist group on an international scale. It covers various aspects such as the identification of the ROC as a fundamentalist group, details about its leadership, size, and structure, a historical overview of its development, challenges faced, initiatives taken, and successes achieved in meeting its goals. Furthermore, the text aims to forecast the future impact of the ROC both locally and globally, considering its media presence and public opinion. It concludes by shedding light on recent events and providing a brief glimpse into potential future developments of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The contemporary Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) is in a paradoxical situation: On all levels of Church life, new practices and concepts are considered to belong to Orthodox tradition, yet at the same time Orthodoxy is regarded as the most “unchangeable” and normative of the Christian confessions. So what makes tradition? The nineteen contributions in this volume examine the ambiguities and complexities created by the dynamic between tradition and innovation within the ROC in relation to the fundamental tenets of Orthodoxy. By this focus, the volume offers new insights and highlights the question how to define (Orthodox) Tradition. It addresses “unorthodox” topics of Orthodox paradoxes. Contributors include: Tatiana Artemyeva, Alexei Beglov, Wil van den Bercken, Per-Arne Bodin, Page Herrlinger, Nadieszda Kizenko, Anastasia Mitrofanova, Stella Rock, and Alexander Verkhovsky.

The patristic, ecclesiological, and liturgical revival in the Orthodox Church has had a profound impact on world Orthodoxy and the ecumenical movement. Orthodox leaders have also contributed to the movement’s efforts in inter-religious dialogue, especially with Muslims. Yet this book is the first comprehensive attempt to assess an Orthodox ‘position’ on Islam. It explains why, despite being neighbors for centuries, relations between Orthodox Christians and Muslims have become increasingly complex as internal and external forces challenge their ability to understand each other and live in peace. It demonstrates how a growing number of Orthodox scholars and leaders have reframed the discussion on Islam, while endorsing and participating in dialogue with Muslims. It shows how a positive relationship with Muslims (and Islam in a general sense) is an essential aspect of Orthodox Christians’ historical past, present identity, and future aspirations.

"There is a broad way that seems right to man but which leads to death and destruction, so also there is a narrow way that opens up into unbelievable glories. This is the romance of orthodoxy." In this book, Douglas Wilson combines G.K. Chesterton-like prose with the Apostles' Creed, and explains such doctrines as the Trinity, creation, fall, salvation, Scripture, and the church with clarity and imagination. Rather than seeing fundamentalist doctrines as a narrow and confining straightjacket, Wilson sees them as the only way for people to find true freedom and joy.

Despite their largely pacifist origins, Christianity and Christian traditions can claim only limited success in their efforts to conciliate conflict, avoid violence, and stop war. Fundamentalism written by James Barr and has been published by Philadelphia : Westminster Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Religion categories.

This book is for those who must cope with the growing liberal/conservative rift in today's church. Today people in the church are disturbed at the upsurge of fundamentalist groups who give strong emphasis to the "inerrancy of the Bible," are openly hostile to modern critical study of theology and the Bible, and suspect that those who do not agree with them are not really Christians. To cope with the current influence of these groups, we must first understand who and what a fundamentalist is. This book is an excellent place to acquire that understanding. Professor Barr gives a complete, well-documented portrait of the fundamentalists and the religion they advocate. He looks at their whole belief structure -- their historical roots, their basic philosophy, their scholarship, where they currently stand, and what type of people they attract. He demonstrates fundamentalism to be an incoherent scholarly position and in contradiction with the central logic of the Christian faith. His critique focuses on issues that divide the church and that need to be dealt with in dialogue to prevent a further split in the church today. - Back cover.
