Landmark Speeches Of The American Conservative Movement written by Peter Schweizer and has been published by Texas A&M University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-03-06 with Political Science categories.

As Ronald Reagan declared, the conservative banner is one of bold, unmistakable colors, not “pastel shades.” Since World War II, the American conservative movement has changed the colors of the national political landscape. Here, in its own words, is the body of thought and rhetoric that has painted the movement’s banner. Award-winning authors Peter Schweizer and Wynton C. Hall have gathered an authoritative collection of speeches representing the modern conservative movement. Beginning with Whittaker Chambers’s 1948 testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee and continuing through the speeches of such conservative icons as Barry Goldwater, Bill Buckley, Phyllis Schlafly, Ronald Reagan, and Barbara Bush, the editors assemble an all-star line-up of conservative thought. Newt Gingrich, champion of conservatism, said that, in this volume, “Peter Schweizer and Wynton Hall have captured the key moments in the emergence of modern conservatism.” Steve Forbes also praised this work as a "timely, much-needed reminder of what the movement is truly about." Without a doubt, Landmark Speeches of the American Conservative Movement is a book that will interest anyone with a passion for politics, the spoken word, or history. The thirteen speeches in this volume powerfully capture the principles, images, and causes that constitute modern American conservatism. Drawing on such thinkers as Russell Kirk and Richard M. Weaver, Schweizer and Hall vividly illustrate the ideas that have moved the conservative movement from the margins of society to the citadels of power. An introduction to each speech explains the context in which it was first delivered and notes the impact of each statement on the movement and the nation. The perfect gift for those who value conservatism or seek to understand it, Landmark Speeches of the American Conservative Movement offers food for thought and action. For historians, political scientists, and students of public communication, the book is an essential source for the ideas that have shaped American society since 1945.

The Prospect Of Presidential Rhetoric written by Martin J. Medhurst and has been published by Texas A&M University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-17 with Political Science categories.

Culminating a decade of conferences that have explored presidential speech, The Prospect of Presidential Rhetoric assesses progress and suggests directions for both the practice of presidential speech and its study. In Part One, following an analytic review of the field by Martin Medhurst, contributors address the state of the art in their own areas of expertise. Roderick P. Hart then summarizes their work in the course of his rebuttal of an argument made by political scientist George Edwards: that presidential rhetoric lacks political impact. Part Two of the volume consists of the forward-looking reports of six task forces, comprising more than forty scholars, charged with outlining the likely future course of presidential rhetoric, as well as the major questions scholars should ask about it and the tools at their disposal. The Prospect of Presidential Rhetoric will serve as a pivotal work for students and scholars of public discourse and the presidency who seek to understand the shifting landscape of American political leadership.

For many Canadians, the attacks of 9/11 produced feelings ofinsecurity, vulnerability, and suspicion of “Arabs.” Howdid these negative attitudes come about? Many point to the complicityof the news media in reproducing racist images of Muslim minorities.Mission Invisible chronicles varying racialized constructionsof Muslim communities in the news during the most significant stage ofreportage: the initial weeks when the events, issues, and primaryactors of 9/11 were all first framed by journalists. By unravelling thediscourse and rhetoric of news coverage in Canada at the dawn of the9/11 era, this book not only uncovers racist representations of Muslimcommunities but also reveals the discursive processes that renderedthis racism invisible.

The idea of Peace Linguistics (PL) has been around for decades. However, the practice of PL has only occurred much more recently, only within the last few years, since the first creditbearing, university-level PL course was taught at Brigham Young University-Hawaii in 2017. Since then, the field of NPL has grown beyond its original goals, of using peaceful language and language that avoids or de-escalates conflict. The New Peace Linguistics (NPL) focuses on in-depth, systematic analyses of the spoken and written language of some of the most powerful people in the world, such as presidents of the USA, as it is they who have the power to start wars or to bring peace. As the first book to be published on PL and on NPL, this work represents a ground-breaking study of the power of language to hurt and harm or to help and give hope. The first four chapters of the book, which provide the foundation on which the rest of the book is built, introduce the concept of Peace Linguistics and the New Peace Linguistics, starting with the origins of PL and coming to the present day. The remaining Part Two and Part Three chapters present in-depth, systematic NPL analyses of George W. Bush, Colin L. Powell, Barack H. Obama, Donald J. Trump and Joseph R. Biden. The concluding chapter reiterates the most important distinguishing and recurring features of NPL, and looks at where the field may be headed in the future.

Religion has always played a special role in the life of the United States. This has been true at Puritan times and it is still true today. Apocalypse Soon? charts the sometimes open, sometimes hidden connections between US popular culture and religion. The book's essays offer a closer look on a wide variety of cultural phenomena that reach from Puritan millennialism to George Bush's appeal to the Christian right, from Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar to the Christian metal band Saviour Machine, and from TV series like Family First, Dead Like Me, and Lost, to Christian diet and chastity programs.
