Excerpt from Our New Masters I have taken Mr. Lowe's phrase as a fitting and expressive title for a book dealing with the working classes and their views, as they stand in these latter days, when those classes are, potentially at any rate, the New Masters of the political and social situation. When, on the passing of the bill that gave the last extension of the franchise, Mr. Lowe said, Let us educate our New Masters!he did more than merely add another to the already tolerably lengthy list of synonyms for the working classes. He indicated a policy-the policy of the future; a policy which it must be evident to all thinking minds it will be imperatively necessary for those having the direction of the national policy to adopt. The key-note struck by Mr. Lowe was largely taken up. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from New York City and Its Masters This enormous growth has not been by the law of natural increase, but by a constantly growing foreign immigration of which the largest factors are the Irish and the German. Side-by side with this general expansion has been the marked trend of population to large cities. In 1850 the number of cities was 85; in 1860, 141; in 1870, 225, and '1880, 286. The proportion of the city to the general population has necessarily undergone a marked change. In 1850 it was per cent; in 1860, in 1870, and in 1880, The State of new-york with an aggregate population of of which is native, and foreign born, contains 12 cities of more than population: viz. Excerpt from Masterpieces of the Masters of Fiction Ashort time ago I determined that instead of taking up any new works of fiction I would go over the masterpieces which I had read long since and see what changes time had made in my impressions of them. To do this I chose some forty of the most distinguished authors and decided to select one story from each, the best one, if I could make up my mind which that was at all events, one which stood in the first rank of his productions. I determined to read these in succession, one after another, in the shortest time possible, and thus get a comprehensive no tion of the whole. Of course under such condi tions exhaustive criticism would be out of the question, but I thought that the general per spective and the comparative merits and faults of each work would appear more vividly in this manner than in any other way. The productions of living authors were dis carded, as well as all fiction in verse. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Great Masters Great artist of the past as a free agent, early possessed of all the power and development acquired by long work against outside pressure, and to think of him as imposing the form of his ideas upon an easy world. Hence, sometimes we think of Albrecht D'urer as bringing Teutonic art into Italy, while, of course, he is nothing more than a German student going to the land of greater art. We throw back into the early position of the great man the image of his full development; we make him out as conscious from the beginning of all his capacities. Instead of recognising in him the same laws that belong to other developments, we insist on his being all of one piece - as if, like Minerva, he had sprung all armed from the brain of Jupiter. In short, we forget that these men had to die long ago to obtain the authority which they hold to - day. It is possible that none of them achieved their best work, or carried out their intentions in full. Rubens and Raphael may have had some such chance, but we know that we see in Michelangelo and Rembrandt the expression of a struggle against outside necessities. To give a full account of the life of any great artist the history of each piece of work should be taken up as we take up the story of a general's campaign. I have not expressly stated these points in the brief essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Masters and Masterpieces of Engraving Engraving, like painting, has an extensive literature of its own. The present volume is designed for the general reader as a condensed survey of the art from its beginnings to our own time. To give some account of the engravers themselves, and of the history and theory of their art; to trace the progress and development of engraving in the works of its representative masters, has been the writer's purpose. The illustra tions are intended to show, as far as possible, the different styles and processes. The heliogravure reproductions are from originals in the British Museum. Excerpt from Old Masters and New: Essays in Art Criticism The essays which have been least altered are the earliest ones and the latest; the latter because they express my present mind as I should now express it; the former because it seemed best to leave them their somewhat youthful tone, merely endeavouring that they shall contain no opinions which I do not still hold. The earliest of all in date, that on The' Sculptors of The Early Italian Renaissance, un doubtedly owes its existence, in part, to unconscious memory of an essay of Pater's which I had read some years before. The traces of its origin could not be removed Without removing its truth, for Pater had said what I wanted to say. I can only leave it with the warning that I claim no originality for it. Indeed I care much less that any of my criticisms should be new than that they should be just, and it is likely enough that many of them will be found to coincide with those of other writers whom I may or may not have read. Excerpt from The Master A noble mind breathed in the features of the good musician (who already, at forty-seven, Seemed Old), and in enthusiasm for his art he was still a very boy. His ruddy cheeks, mous tache Of soft, curling hair, as snowy as his thick, white beard, his placid brow, his smile, which-was a fascination, the twinkle in his eye, - all de noted a character full of fine touches and tender melody, not wanting in humor, and a nature susceptible to a fault.
