Il Sulcis Iglesiente, storica regione mineraria del sud ovest sardo, è emersa negli ultimi decenni per la grave crisi industriale che la attraversa e l’ha tristemente annoverata tra i territori più poveri d’Italia. Tuttavia, l’incontro tra vicende storiche e naturali, la tensione tra gli equilibri sociali e il repentino ammodernamento territoriale, le alterazioni ambientali che il Novecento ha lasciato a questa regione, ne restituiscono oggi un paesaggio tra i più complessi e irripetibili del bacino mediterraneo. Questo testo vuole focalizzare un canale potenziale, ma estremamente concreto, di questo paesaggio, la rete ferroviaria dismessa, cercando di non offrirne però solo una reminiscenza storica, quanto una proiezione rinnovata dell’uso, dello spazio e del tempo, in quella straordinaria esperienza di vivere i luoghi legata all’attraversamento. Si raccolgono nel testo progetti e strategie che, nell’ultimo decennio, alcuni organi pubblici di questo territorio hanno provato a promuovere e coordinare, all’interno di un più ampio e condiviso processo culturale di recupero del patrimonio eccellente della modernità in senso sostenibile. Adriano Dessì, ingegnere e architetto, è dottore e assegnista di ricerca presso il DICAAR dell’Università di Cagliari sui temi del progetto urbano e di paesaggio. Il suo campo di ricerca dal 2006 è costituito dal paesaggio sardo, prima con lo studio dei paesaggi residuali delle città giardino di fondazione in Sardegna durante il Master in Recupero e Conservazione dell’Architettura Moderna poi con lo studio delle forme e delle strutture dei paesaggi rurali sardi durante il triennio dottorale. Approfondisce il tema dei paesaggi produttivi del Sulcis Iglesiente con la tesi specialistica in Architettura e il biennio di assegno di ricerca. Presenta questa ricerca all’ECLAS (European Council of Architecture of Landscape Schools) e all’EURAU (European Symposium on Research in Architecture and Urban). La tesi di dottorato è stata presentata alla VI Biennale del Paesaggio a Barcellona nel 2010. Dal 2011 tiene un laboratorio di progetto presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria e Architettura di Cagliari intitolato RurbanLab - Paesaggi insediativi tra l’urbano e il rurale. Sui temi del progetto architettonico, urbano e paesaggistico si è aggiudicato concorsi internazionali (due volte vincitore del concorso). Sara Mucelli, si è laureata in Architettura allo I.U.A.V. di Venezia nel 2003. Nel 2004 ha conseguito il Master di Secondo livello in Telerilevamento e Sistemi Informativi Geografici (GIS), presso l’Università di Cagliari. Nel 2007 ha conseguito il titolo di Master di Secondo Livello in Recupero e Conservazione dell’Architettura Moderna, presso l’Università di Cagliari. Ha collaborato con diversi professionisti ed enti, occupandosi di progetti inerenti le tematiche dell’architettura, dell’architettura sostenibile, della progettazione del territorio e del paesaggio. Dal 2007 all’ottobre 2013 ha lavorato presso la Provincia di Carbonia Iglesias nel servizio di Pianificazione del Territorio. Attualmente lavora presso il Comune di Cagliari.

The A22 motorway and the history of its project and construction constitute a unique case within the implementation of the Italian motorway network after World War II, mainly due to the exceptional contribution of landscape architect Pietro Porcinai. Complementary narratives have unfolded around the A22, concerning the policies and practices that affected its implementation, the architectural debate surrounding its design and construction and its structural transformations over time. Starting from this peculiar history, and from the study of the current and expected evolution of the motorway, this research investigates the obsolescence of modern infrastructure and the possible strategies of maintenance and preservation.
