Offering a rich ethnographic account, this book traces the historical processes by which Andalusians experienced the shift from being poor emigrants to northern Europe to becoming privileged citizens of the southern borderland of the European Union, a region where thousands of African immigrants have come in search of a better life. It draws on extended ethnographic fieldwork in Granada and Senegal, exploring the shifting, complementary and yet antagonistic relations between Spaniards and African immigrants in the Andalusian agrarian work place. The author's findings challenge the assumption of fixed national, cultural, and socioeconomic boundaries vis-à-vis outside migration in core countries, showing how legal and cultural identities of Andalusians are constructed together with that of immigrants. Liliana Suárez-Navaz is Professor in the Social Anthropology Department at Autónoma University of Madrid.

L’objectiu d’aquest estudi, s’emmarca en una línia d’investigació clarament renovadora que pretén aprofundir i ajudar a aclarir dos aspectes fonamentals de la revolució burgesa al País Valencià. D’una banda, estudiar els efectes de la desamortització pel que pogueren tenir de negatiu en la futura industrialització i, de l’altra, analitzar els canvis afavorits per aquesta operació en l’estructura de la propietat (...). L’aspecte substancial d’aquest important treball d’investigació rau en l’estudi dels beneficiaris del procés (...). Així, l’autor posa de relleu la complexitat de la desamortització, les conseqüències de la qual no es limiten al moment mateix de la subhasta, sinó que es projecten econòmicament i, sobretot, socialment més enllà de la pública adjudicació (...). En aquesta línia, les conclusions que ens ofereix posen en relleu que la major part de la superfície rústica va anar a parar a mans dels petits i mitjans propietaris agrícoles (...) Al capdavall, les repercussions últimes de la desamortització se situen, segons l’autor, en aqueix canvi en la naturalesa de la propietat que forma part del procés de la revolució burgesa.
