Panic buying is a common response during crises; however, to date it has been a significantly under-researched area. Recent evidence suggests that an environmental stimulus, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, war, earthquakes, flooding, public health emergencies (SARS, MARS) can trigger this phenomenon. As an environmental crisis takes its toll, the understanding of panic buying becomes overlooked. Nevertheless, panic buying causes series of events separate from these primary events. Understanding the management of emergencies and disasters should be an integral part of dealing with panic buying since every major environmental crisis has the potential to initiate panic buying behaviour in the general public. This book will analyse episodes of panic buying and major environmental crisis focusing on specific prevention strategies. This book is the first of its kind of approach to join up the management of panic buying during a public health emergency.

Climate change is increasingly of great concern to the world community. The earth has witnessed the buildup of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere, changes in biodiversity, and more occurrences of natural disasters. Recently, scientists have begun to shift their emphasis away from curbing carbon dioxide emission to adapting to carbon dioxide emission. The increase in natural disasters around the world is unprecedented in earth's history and these disasters are often associated to climate changes. Many nations along the coastal lines are threatened by massive floods and tsunamis. Earthquakes are increasing in intensity and erosion and droughts are problems in many parts of the developing countries. This book is therefore to investigate ways to prepare and effectively manage these disasters and possibly reduce their impacts. The focus is on mitigation strategies and policies that will help to reduce the impacts of natural disasters. The book takes an in-depth look at climate change and its association to socio-economic development and cultures especially in vulnerable communities; and investigates how communities can develop resilience to disasters. A balanced and a multiple perspective approach to manage the risks associated with natural disasters is offered by engaging authors from the entire globe to proffer solutions.

Economics Of Disasters And Climate Change written by S. Mohammed Irshad and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-09 with Business & Economics categories.

This book discusses the theory, method, and practice of risk economics and also examines climate change and disaster's theoretical and practical implications on capital formation and accumulation in the contemporary economic system. It explores the theoretical and practical challenges of engaging with climate and disaster risk in the changing context of capital investments and market expansion. It explains the emergence of an at-risk society and its interface with economic decision-making. The critical issue the book explores is the implication of certainty over the return period of risk and its influence on the economic behaviour of the state and market institutions. Risk sharing and governing economic risks in the context of financial capitalism is a major theoretical issue the book engages with. It offers a new conceptual framework to see how risk economics evolves out of increasing climate and disaster risks and a counter-discourse on the mainstream economic theoretical standpoint on capital and explains the economics of capital replacement in vulnerable social systems. These broader perspectives will be valuable to economists, researchers, experts in disaster and climate risk, corporate professionals, economics educators, specialists in financial economics, and those involved in development policy-making. This book offers a detailed discussion of risk mitigation and its interface with sustainable development goals including climate action.

The key to the survival of museum collections is a stable indoor environment and vital to this is a well-maintained building with effective environmental services. Environmental Management sets out clearly the theory and practice of achieving an appropriate museum environment for both collections and people. The book emphasises the need for planning and places the environmental needs of museum collections at the forefront of the responsibilities of museum managers. May Cassar stresses the role of the building as the first line of defence against environmental instability, recognising the importance of regular environmental monitoring and control, and the division of museum spaces into critical areas housing collections and non-critical areas accommodating offices, cafes and communal spaces. Environmental Management presents a strategic approach to environmental management, in contrast to the piecemeal approach to environmental monitoring and control still practised by many museums. However, rather than providing ready solutions and rigid rules, the book introduces principles and ideas on which to base decisions about creating the appropriate environment.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed our activities, like teaching, researching, and socializing. We are confused because we haven’t experienced before. However, as Earth's smartest inhabitants, we can adapt new ways to survive the pandemic without losing enthusiasm. Therefore, even in pandemic conditions, we can still have scientific discussions, even virtually. The main theme of this symposium is "Reinforcement of the Sustainable Development Goals Post Pandemic" as a part of the masterplan of United Nations for sustainable development goals in 2030. This symposium is attended by 348 presenters from Indonesia, Malaysia, UK, Scotland, Thailand, Taiwan, Tanzania and Timor Leste which published 202 papers. Furthermore, we are delighted to introduce the proceedings of the 2nd Borobudur Symposium Borobudur on Humanities and Social Sciences 2020 (2nd BIS-HSS 2020). We hope our later discussion may result transfer of experiences and research findings from participants to others and from keynote speakers to participants. Also, we hope this event can create further research network.

Theology Of Excess Doom Spending Consumption And The End Times In Religious Thought written by Vincent Froom and has been published by 2gay publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-10 with Religion categories.

Why do people buy in times of crisis? As fears of climate change, pandemics, and financial collapse grow, so does a peculiar phenomenon: “doom spending.” Rooted in anxiety and apocalyptic beliefs, this drive for excess isn’t just a quirk of human behavior—it’s a window into our deepest theological and spiritual questions. Theology of Excess uncovers how religious ideas, particularly those tied to the end times, shape patterns of consumption, revealing a surprising relationship between eschatology and economics. This book dives into scripture, church history, and modern religious movements to understand why believers often turn to material accumulation during times of uncertainty. It explores how teachings on wealth, stewardship, and the end times influence everything from doomsday prepping to stockpiling groceries, unpacking both ancient texts and contemporary practices. Through engaging analysis and case studies, Theology of Excess offers a fresh perspective on consumer behavior, urging readers to reflect on how spiritual beliefs shape financial choices. This thought-provoking journey challenges not only how we understand consumption but also how faith can offer a different vision—one of hope, simplicity, and wise stewardship—in a world seemingly on the brink. Whether you’re a theologian, a spiritual seeker, or someone concerned about societal patterns of overconsumption, this book will inspire a new outlook on how faith and finance intersect in an age of fear. Key Themes: 1. Materialism vs. Spiritual Security: “Theology of Excess” explores the tension between material wealth and spiritual security, illustrating how overconsumption, especially during crises, is often driven by spiritual emptiness and fear. 2. Eschatology and Economic Behavior: The book examines how beliefs about the end times and apocalyptic fears influence economic behaviors like doom spending, linking this to theological teachings about trust, providence, and redemption. 3. Consumerism and Capitalism in Theological Critique: The book critiques the ways in which modern consumerism and capitalist culture encourage excess and financial recklessness, contrasting these with religious teachings on moderation, stewardship, and community. 4. Spiritual and Psychological Responses to Crisis: By addressing the psychological dimensions of fear and uncertainty, the book ties in theological reflections on faith, trust in God, and the dangers of seeking comfort in material things
