Excerpt from Papers and Addresses This book of addresses has been published to perpetuate the memory of one who, during his whole medical life, was connected with the Medical Faculty of McGill University, and who had much to do with the shaping of its destinies. His interest in Medical Education was always of the greatest, and his whole heart was in the work of increasing the efficiency of the Faculty with which he was connected, and keeping it well up in the forefront of scientific progressive schools of medicine. His advocacy of any new method of teaching or new department to be added to the curriculum was always vigorous and candid, provided he was assured that it was in the interest of the School. These addresses will be valuable to all graduates who wish to know the history and progress of their Alma Mater, for they contain a narrative of the advances made during the most progressive period of the Faculty, and also the difficulties and trials which had to be encountered in order to arrive at such brilliant results. Excerpt from Scientific Papers and Addresses, Vol. 2 Having recently had occasion to study the habits and anatomy of the English Marten Cats, Mustela martes and Mustela foina, and having looked into the history of these animals and of certain other carnivora which have borne the same name as they in ancient and modern times, I have come to think that the latter of the two creatures specified namely, the white-breasted marten, Mustela foina, was the animal which the ancient Greeks and Romans employed for the same domestic purposes for which we employ the Felis domesticus; whilst this latter animal has been employed as at present in Western Europe for probably a considerably longer period than the last thousand years. Other writers to whom I have referred, and amongst them notably Dureau de la Malle, have adopted the former of these conclusions; but upon premises more or less inadequate or incorrect or both. I am well assured that this question has for the philosophic naturalist much more than a merely archaeological interest, for in the resolving of it we may have light cast upon the working of the principle which Mr. Darwin has shown to be more potent than any other in regulating the distribution of species, and which Van Beneden, with the well-known physiological aphorisms of Wolff and Treviranus before his eyes, has formulated in the words, 'les etres qui composent une Faune sont solidaires entre eux comma les organes d'un etre vivant.' Excerpt from Scientific Papers and Addresses, Vol. 1 These volumes contain a selection of the most important Essays contributed by the late Professor Rolleston to the Transactions of various learned Societies and to scientific Journals. Along with them are also reprinted several Addresses delivered before the British Association for the Advancement of Science and other learned bodies. These reprints have been arranged in the following sections: I. Anatomy and Physiology, in which are included many important Anthropological memoirs; II. Zoology, including his Memoirs on Archseo-zoology; III. Archaeology; IV. Addresses and Miscellaneous papers. Amongst the unpublished manuscripts left by Dr. Rolleston were notes on various subjects of archaeological interest, which, owing to the failure in health that for some months preceded his much lamented death, he had evidently been unable to prepare for publication. Of these, his notes on the site of some Roman pottery works discovered in 1879 at the Mynchery upon the Sewage Farm near Littlemore, Oxford; also notes on archaeological discoveries made both at Wytham, Berks, and at Yarnton, Oxfordshire, are of much interest. Unfortunately these notes are too fragmentary to be reproduced in the form in which he left them, but I have prepared a digest, which has been printed as an appendix to the second volume.
