“PROLOGUE THE SEARCH FOR GOOD WATER On November 7, 1829, a New Mexican trader named Antonio Armijo led a 60-man party on the first leg of what became a historic deviation from the Great Spanish Trail route to Los Angeles. That deviation resulted in the discovery of Las Vegas. By Christmas Day, Armijo’s caravan had crossed southern Utah and moved into the northwest corner of Arizona. The caravan camped near what is now Littlefield — a sleepy hamlet about 100 miles northeast of present Las Vegas. Armijo dispatched a reconnaissance party to look for a possible shortcut west, and to look for water. A member of the party was a young Mexican scout named Rafael Rivera. He decided to break away from the main party and head due west alone over unexplored desert.” Excerpt From: Ralph J. Roske. “Las Vegas: A Desert Paradise.” iBooks.

We are all aware of the human frailties that lead to crime and grief for others. Some of these frailties include greed, lust, theft, and even murder. With respect to paradise, it is often defined as a state of happiness rather than a specific place. Tom Wall, former sheriff of Napa County, has just been elected as a state senator. His wife, Carol Simmons Wall, is the new elected sheriff of nearby Solano County. They are living in paradise physically and mentally on a twenty-eight-acre ranch in the Stags Leap region of Napa County. While living this dream, forces arise that threaten their careers, fortune, and their lives. These forces will stop at nothing to achieve their evil goals. There is a plan to dominate an entire industry, and it starts out slowly but increases its unyielding influence to sweep away all opposition to their goal. What and who those forces are that wield their strength yet remain a mystery.

Technology is shaping our culture and controlling our lives -- for better or for worse. Often, technology's benefits far outweigh its negative impacts, and technological advances can seem boundless. But the scientificÐtechnological worldview tends to override other value systems. Indeed, this technological way of thinking has influenced many contemporary ideas, beliefs, values, habits, and ways of communicating. Furthermore, in addition to technology's well-known environmental impacts, social, aesthetic, and spiritual consequences are now emerging. How can we balance positive physical effects of technology with other ambiguous or negative impacts? Some of the decisions we face have no precedent from which to draw wisdom. For this reason, the resources of Scripture and the Christian tradition must be brought to bear on technological questions: How is technology used and abused today? Does technological progress lead to human progress? How can Scripture help us, both individually and collectively, to manage technology's impact in proactive ways? Swearengen uncovers a comprehensive scriptural mandate for managing technology. On his way to a theology of technology, he evaluates which advances are moving society in directions consistent with God's purposes. 'Beyond Paradise: Technology and the Kingdom of God' aims to provide practical means for assessing technology's influence and for steering technology and its effects toward biblical ends.

A low-budget breakout film that wowed critics and audiences on its initial release, Stranger Than Paradise would prove to be a seminal film in the new American independent cinema movement and establish its director, Jim Jarmusch, as a hip, cult auteur. Taking inspiration from 1960s underground filmmaking, international art cinema, genre cinema, and punk culture, Jarmusch’s film provides a bridge between midnight movie features and a new mode of quirky, offbeat independent filmmaking. This book probes the film's production history, initial reception, aesthetics, and legacy in order to understand its place within the cult film canon. In examining the film's cult pedigree, it explores a number of threads that fed into the film—including New York downtown culture of the early 1980s and Jarmusch’s involvement in music—as well as reflecting on how the film's status has developed alongside Jarmusch’s subsequent output and reputation.

"Paradise Glossed" is a collection of poems, a diary in rhyme - and a Bristolian book by a Bristolian author. It was written over the course of twelve months at a very specific point in Britain's history - the "fag-end of New Labour", and the height of the modern technological age. Desperately seeking the chinks of light amidst the 21st Century gloom of 'X-Factor' culture, social networking, mobile texting and super-rich corporations, the author has a ball in letting off steam via this crazy log in which, it seems, no-one or nothing is safe - the Royal family, Prime-Ministers, "The Matthew", mobile phones, balloons, Simon Cowell (?) Drawing on topical and historical themes, and with a strong local flavour throughout, "Paradise Glossed" is the author's humorous take on an historic and infamous twelve months set between May 2009 and April 2010, which began with the MP's expenses scandal and ended with us nervously awaiting the result of the General Election......

Since it first rolled off the presses in 1856, The Honolulu Advertiser has been an important force in reporting and shaping the news of Honolulu and, secondarily, the Hawaiian Islands. Established as The Pacific Commercial Advertiser, a four-page weekly, it was the first enduring non-government owned or subsidized newspaper published in the Hawaiian Kingdom. Under its first owner, the son of New England missionaries, the Advertiser became the most successful commercial English language newspaper in the Islands. The paper became a daily in 1882 and in 1921 changed its name to The Honolulu Advertiser. Now owned by Gannett Company, Inc., the Advertiser is one of the oldest newspapers still operating west of the Rockies. George Chaplin, editor-in-chief of the Advertiser from 1959 to 1986, has written a colorful and entertaining insider's account of nearly a century and a half of Advertiser history. He covers the legion of personalities that has worked for the Advertiser over the years: owners (from its first Island owner, Henry Whitney, to its last, the Thurston Twigg-Smith family), publishers, editors, reporters, political cartoonists, photographers, and pressroom people. He reports on issues and historical events that had a powerful impact on the Honolulu community and comments on the newspaper's position regarding each: the sensational Massie trial, the dilemma of Hawaii's Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II, the labor movement and communism in the Islands, and statehood, among others. He also recalls the many political figures who have waged their media battles within the pages of the Advertiser.Presstime in Paradise is an illuminating and informative look at the internal operations of a newspaper and its relationship with a community that has both influenced it and been influenced by it. It adds significantly to the growing body of literature on the role of the free press in Hawaii.

Paradise Gained is Paradise made known. Jesus is returning soon to restore the world to perfection. But what exactly is he coming to do? How will the universe be changed? And most importantly: what will our new lives be like? This is perhaps the most important question in all of Christianity, yet few have attempted to provide an answer. That is, until now: Paradise Gained is an epic fantasy novel taking place in the millennial kingdom: a universe run by God, where all wishes and prayers of all inhabitants are granted. Contains a real story with fleshed out characters and plot twists. Features extensive world-building across several planets, exploring potential societies formed by people living in a reality operating on a supernatural order rather than natural. Enter the world of Heaven, except this time with an actually good and engaging story, endearing characters, accurate metaphysics, ambitious world-building, and correct theology. Nothing at all like Dante's Divine Comedy, which fails to demonstrate even the most basic understanding of the nature of reality, the afterlife, and God's justice according to the Bible. Follow Pandora on her journey as she is whisked away from her boring daily life to a far better universe where everything is perfect, and all her dreams and desires finally become met forever and ever. Explore New Earth through her eyes as she experiences the vast wonders and pleasures of God's eternal kingdom. Though the world is unfamiliar, she has her best friend to accompany her whilst exploring the vast variety of activities on the New Earth, meeting many resurrected historical figures along the way. The replacement for Dante's Divine Comedy and John Milton's Paradise Lost for the modern world. It is also a serious work of philosophy with commentary and rebuttals to many past philosophers. The main question the book explores is this: What would a perfect universe be like? What state of existence could be eternally sustainable for immortal beings? And how can the problems of nihilism and eternal recurrence ever find their solution? This book explores potential answers to all of those questions, and much more. Prepare to enter the most philosophically rigorous and Biblically accurate version of Paradise ever put to paper. When Jesus Christ returns in the year 2028, nearly everything Pandora experiences is what you can expect your own life to be like, very soon. There is much to look forward to! This book is just Part 1 of a much larger story that is still being worked on. Given the vastly different nature of Part 2, the importance of the novel's message, and the time still needed to complete it, the author has decided to split the release into multiple parts so readers may get a taste of (true) Heaven as soon as possible.
