This book tackles a number of different perspectives concerning the parasitic helminth Ascaris, both in animals and in humans and the disease known as ascariasis. It seeks to identify interesting, exciting and novel aspects, which will interest readers from a broad range of disciplines.Over a quarter of the world's population are infected with the human roundworm, and the equivalent in pigs is equally ubiquitous. Both contribute to insidious and chronic nutritional morbidity, and this has been quantified, in humans, as disability adjusted life years approximating 10.5 million. Ascaris larvae develop in host parenteral tissues, and the resultant pathology has been condemnation. Ascariasis, despite its staggering global prevalence and the sheer numbers of people it infects, remains a classic neglected disease. However, renewed interest in the consequences of early infection with worms from the perspective of immune modulation, co-infections and the development of allergy further enhances the relevance of these parasites. Brings together a wide range of topics and approaches and recent, comprehensive and progressive research concerning the neglected parasite Ascaris Provides a blueprint of how a single parasite entity can stimulate interest in basic biology, clinical science, veterinary science, public health and epidemiology Presents a wealth of new insights given that a book on this parasite has not been published for over 20 years 16 chapters from a range of top authors from around the world

The Parasite Stress Theory Of Values And Sociality written by Randy Thornhill and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-17 with Science categories.

This book develops and tests an ecological and evolutionary theory of the causes of human values—the core beliefs that guide people’s cognition and behavior—and their variation across time and space around the world. We call this theory the parasite-stress theory of values or the parasite-stress theory of sociality. The evidence we present in our book indicates that both a wide span of human affairs and major aspects of human cultural diversity can be understood in light of variable parasite (infectious disease) stress and the range of value systems evoked by variable parasite stress. The same evidence supports the hypothesis that people have psychological adaptations that function to adopt values dependent upon local infectious-disease adversity. The authors have identified key variables, variation in infectious disease adversity and in the core values it evokes, for understanding these topics and in novel and encompassing ways. Although the human species is the focus in the book, evidence presented in the book shows that the parasite-stress theory of sociality informs other topics in ecology and evolutionary biology such as variable family organization and speciation processes and biological diversity in general in non-human animals.

Rajan and Zingales demonstrate that free and open financial markets inspire human ingenuity, make nations competitive, and spread prosperity. In the wake of recent business scandals, financial markets are often thought of as parasitic institutions that feed off the blood, sweat, and tears of human endeavour. Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists shows that such markets in fact supply the fuel of a vital economy. And they are the only effective antidote to counteract the manipulations of elite groups that keep a tight grip on capital and restrict the economic development of nations and the entrepreneurial success of individuals.'Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists will dismay both titans of industry and their foes across the barricades, the anti-globalisation left that sees little in capitalism worth saving. It's written for the rest of us - all those who simply want a fair chance to prosper.'Business Week'Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists is a highly original study of the ways in which vested interests have sought throughout history to protect their wealth and power by rigging the market structure, even subverting free markets entirely when it suits them.'Washington Post

The Handbook on Wealth and the Super-Rich is a landmark multidisciplinary evaluation of both the lives and lifestyles of the super-rich, as well as the processes that underpin super-wealth generation and its unequal distribution. Drawing on international case studies, leading experts from across the social sciences offer 22 accessible and coherently organized chapters, which critically analyse a range of topics including: • the legitimacy of extreme wealth from a moral economic perspective • biographies of illicit super-wealth • London’s housing markets • how the very wealthy fly • the environmental consequences of super-rich lives • crafting immigration policies to attract the rich. Students and scholars studying a host of topics such as development studies, economics, geography, history, political science and sociology will find this book eminently engaging. It will also be of great interest to public commentators, charitable organizations and NGOs concerned with wealth and income distributions.

Parasites Of Homo Sapiens written by Richard Ashford and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-01-23 with Science categories.

Homo sapiens rank among the most parasitized of all animals. In part this is because we know so much about all aspects of the biology of our species, but in addition, our varied habitat and diet and our global distribution exposes us to more infections than any other species. Whereas some familiar parasitic infections are responsible for much human disease and suffering, the great majority are rare or obscure forms ignored by all but the most comprehensive texts. The Parasites of Homo sapiens: An Annotated checklist of the Protozoa, Helminths and Arthropods for Which We Are Home, 2nd Edition presents a comprehensive listing of them all. Closely following the pattern of the first edition, this new edition incorporates a wealth of further information and data from the most recently published research findings. An indispensable guide for all parasitologists, it presents a comprehensive checklist of all animals naturally parasitic in or on the human body. Each parasite listed includes a complete summary of its characteristics. The structure of each entry includes: The scientific name of the parasite Synonyms for scientific names Status of reported human cases Geographical distribution and abundance Parasite habitat on humans Hosts Transmission mechanisms Human risk factors Indication of host-specificity status
