Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between teachers' and parents' beliefs and expectations of parental involvement and the achievement of students in three title I elementary schools. Methods: Using the School and Family Partnership Surveys of Teachers and Parents in the Elementary and Middle Grades (Epstein & Salinas, 1993), teachers and parents at each of the three elementary schools completed survey questions to attain their beliefs and expectations of parental involvement based on Epstein's framework of Six Types of Involvement for a School, Family and Community Partnership. Results: Results: A total of 1, 205 consented student (n=579), parents (n=579), and teachers (n=48) participated in this study. For each sample type (i.e. student, parent, teacher), N= 579 students and parents and N=48 teachers provided consent to participate in the study. The correlational analysis revealed that although there were no significant relationships between parents' and teachers' beliefs and expectations of parental involvement and student achievement, a parent's level of education was related to their expectations of parental involvement and their child's achievement. The qualitative findings of this study indicate that parents and teachers find that the most important form of parental involvement is communication and after school trainings for parents. These findings could help inform parental involvement efforts targeting Title I elementary schools.

A strong parent-teacher relationship is vital to making a child's school experience a positive one. The aim of this study was to explore issues in parent-teacher relationship in the Indian schooling system. To fulfil the aim of the study ten teachers from two schools (five from each school) were selected. Also ten parents of students attending the two schools were selected (five from each school). A semi-structured interview was conducted under the following head: Interaction patterns between teachers and parents, issues in trust and expectations that teachers and parents have from one another. Findings showed that parents and teachers interacted regularly with each other and that there was consensus among them about the issues that they considered important for their children's education. Issues of trust and expectations from one another also revealed high degrees of agreement. Some differences were found in the expectations that parents and teachers had from one another. Suggestions to improve the relationship were made.

Research on the impact of expectancy on achievement is mostly conducted from the teachers’ or parents’ perspectives. However, research has also found that students’ cognitive, emotional, and social awareness can significantly alter and direct their behaviour within their learning environments. Despite the importance of student perceptions, in a recent survey by the Ministry of Education, students indicated their perspectives in class to be a crucial yet absent element of effective learning. Focusing on students as part of the solution, the current study assessed the relations between students’ perceptions of parent and teacher expectations and student motivation, learning, and achievement. The study also explored students’ views on learning improvements within class and home contexts. A concurrent mixed methods design was adopted. Likert scale survey ratings from 917 Year 7 and 8 students were analysed. Perceptions of teacher and parent expectations were predictive of student self-efficacy, conceptions of learning, deep and strategic learning approaches, and achievement. Further, perceptions of teacher expectations emerged as the stronger predictor of the dependent variables. Students who perceived parents and teachers as having high expectations scored highly in student motivation and learning compared to students who perceived parents and teachers as having lower expectations. Moreover, high perceptions of teacher expectations emerged as having a buffering effect on low perceptions of parent expectations. Thematic analysis of students’ responses revealed teacher expectations, supportive student-adult relationships, awareness of student perspectives, and quality instructions and feedback as the most prominent influences on student learning. The study urges formation of school-level systems to promote students’ perceptions of learning and teaching within class. Further, the study reinforces fostering parental involvement in the form of high expectations and autonomy-oriented learning involvement at home. Educational implications of the findings are discussed.

Given the projected increase of Hispanic Spanish-speaking English language learners (ELLs), researchers have begun examining issues related to their high levels of school dropout, largely stemming from academic underachievement. The focus of this study is to examine the impact of teacher expectations, parent expectations, and academic self-efficacy on the achievement of Hispanic Spanish-speaking ELLs. Participants in this study were from a medium-size school district in southwest Texas and included 99 2nd, 5th, and 8th grade students identified as limited English proficient, their parent, and their teacher. Norm-referenced achievement measures and researcher developed measures were utilized in this study. Findings from this study indicate that teacher expectations was a significant predictor of all measures of achievement, while parent expectations was a significant predictor of English reading and students' academic self-efficacy was a significant predictor of Spanish reading. Second, this study determined the best predictor for reading and math achievement was teacher expectations in 2nd grade, but there were no significant predictors in 5th and 8th grade. Third, this study addressed the possibility of academic self-efficacy functioning as a mediator, but the analysis was not conducted because academic self-efficacy did not serve as a significant predictor of all measures of achievement. Findings from additional analyses indicate that students' English language proficiency was determined to be a significant predictor of English reading achievement and parent expectations. Furthermore, students' Spanish proficiency was positively associated with their grade levels, and Spanish proficiency was negatively related to English proficiency. Academic self-efficacy was separated by domains (i.e., math self-efficacy and reading self-efficacy). In the overall sample math self-efficacy was not a significant predictor of math achievement. Math self-efficacy served as a significant predictor for 5th and 8th grade math achievement. In the overall sample, reading self-efficacy did not significantly predict English or Spanish reading. Reading self-efficacy served as a significant predictor in 8th grade English reading. Parents' employment desires for their children demonstrated a mismatch with parents' desire for their child's highest level of education. Teachers believed that family concerns were the greatest obstacle participants faced and many did not desire to speculate about students' future employment.
