Excerpt from London as Seen and Described by Famous Writers In this work, which is a compilation of views and impressions of the British metropolis, I have followed, in some measure, the plan of my former book on Paris in selecting from a vast number of works descriptions of such external characteristics of the city as are recorded by travellers and famous native and foreign writers. In Paris, the selections, as a rule, are devoted to special monuments, while in this book they deal largely with general impressions of various sections of the great city. However, there will be found descriptions of many of the chief monuments, the streets, the squares, the parks, the old churches and civic buildings with associations, besides much interesting historical matter; but I have almost entirely neglected including articles on the London of the past and have restricted myself to the London of the Nineteenth Century. Comparatively few of those who are ready to admit the greatness of London and to whom the name alone suggests a wealth of romantic and historical interest, realize that the marvellous city on the Thames has special charms beneath its canopy of smoke and fog for the artist and lover of the picturesque. This quality has been insisted upon in the following pages, wherein much space has been given to the river, the docks and out-of-the-way nooks and corners that have aroused the enthusiastic admiration of many writers. The London fog, which is so much abused, as a rule, has its apologist and eulogist here. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. “Like All the Light We Cannot See, The Paris Hours explores the brutality of war and its lingering effects with cinematic intensity. The ending will leave you breathless.” —Christina Baker Kline, author of Orphan Train and A Piece of the World One day in the City of Light. One night in search of lost time. Paris between the wars teems with artists, writers, and musicians, a glittering crucible of genius. But amidst the dazzling creativity of the city’s most famous citizens, four regular people are each searching for something they’ve lost. Camille was the maid of Marcel Proust, and she has a secret: when she was asked to burn her employer’s notebooks, she saved one for herself. Now she is desperate to find it before her betrayal is revealed. Souren, an Armenian refugee, performs puppet shows for children that are nothing like the fairy tales they expect. Lovesick artist Guillaume is down on his luck and running from a debt he cannot repay—but when Gertrude Stein walks into his studio, he wonders if this is the day everything could change. And Jean-Paul is a journalist who tells other people’s stories, because his own is too painful to tell. When the quartet’s paths finally cross in an unforgettable climax, each discovers if they will find what they are looking for. Told over the course of a single day in 1927, The Paris Hours takes four ordinary people whose stories, told together, are as extraordinary as the glorious city they inhabit.

Excerpt from Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers This book consists of a collection of impressions, essays and criticisms by sympathetic travellers, historians and artist, gathered together to give a general impression of the half-submerged "Queen of the Adriatic." We are prepared for the peculiar charm of the fantastic floating city of dreams by the peculiar charm of the fantastic floating city of dreams by Dickens's prose-poem which shows the spirit with which Venice should be visited and studied; for the Venice of to-day, with her fallen Campanile, her filled-up canals, and her picturesque and individuals phases of the city are presented. The historical articles by Grant Allen on the Origins of Venice and by Ruskin on Torcello, which open and close the book, emphasize the antiquity of the "City of the Lagoons" and her simple beginnings. The growth of the Republic is clearly set forth by Green, and her power and magnificence are described in the course of various essays, notably those on The Doge and The Arsenal. The first two historical articles prepare us for our trip through Venice, before taking which, Ruskin gives a general view of the ocean-city, "set like a golden clasp on the griddle of the earth," reflecting its marble palaces upon that "green pavement" which every breeze breaks "into new fantasies of rich tesselation," or standing at ebb-tide upon its flat plain of dark green seaweed.
