Excerpt from London as Seen and Described by Famous Writers Paris in selecting from a vast number of works descriptions of such external characteristics of the city as are recorded by travellers and famous native and foreign writers. In Paris, the selections, as a rule, are devoted to special monu ments, while in this book they deal largely with general impressions of various sections of the great city. However, there will be found descriptions of many of the chief monu ments, the streets, the squares, the parks, the old churches and civic buildings with associations, besides much interest ing historical matter; but I have almost entirely neglected including articles on the London of the past and have re stricted myself to the London of the Nineteenth Century. Comparatively few of those who are ready to admit the greatness of London and to whom the name alone suggests a wealth of romantic and historical interest, realize that the marvellous city on the Thames has special charms beneath its canopy of smoke and fog for the artist and lover of the picturesque. This quality has been insisted upon in the following pages, wherein much space has been given to the river, the docks and out-of-the-way nooks and corners that have aroused the enthusiastic admiration of many writers. The London fog, which is so much abused, as a rule, has its apologist and eulogist here. The immensity of the city is fully brought out in the brilliant essays of Mr. G. W. Excerpt from Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers As in my similar books on London and Paris, I have fol lowed a general plan of topographical arrangement. There fore, we begin with a general View of the Lagoons and the Outer Rim from which we catch a distant glimpse of Venice. We then enter a gondola and float along the Grand Canal with Gautier to point out its array of palaces and monuments of fame, beauty and historical interest, pausing to learn from Molmenti of the luxurious interiors of the Patri cian's Palaces in their prime. Santa Maria della Salute, The Rialto, the Ca' d'oro and the Fondachi claim our attention until we land and ascend the Campanile, with Henry Havard to aid us in recognising the chief buildings at our feet and the misty blue mountain peaks in the far distance. After this bird's-eye view of luminous Venice, framed by her lagoons, we enter St. Mark's to study its architecture, sculptures and mosaics, and next stop to enjoy the Piazza and learn the sig nificance of its famous columns. The Ducal Palace then claims our interest, without and within. Our travels through the city are now interrupted by the examination of some mas terpieces of Venetian painting, described by Taine; after which, we again enter our gondola to visit some of the churches of especial note, wells and squares, and side-canals, which happily for us are not yet filled up. We enjoy a few afternoon excursions to islands from Chioggia on the south to Torcello on the north, - and thus our visit ends. Excerpt from Imperial Paris: Including New Scenes for Old Visitors Some of the papers contained in this book have already appeared in Household Words; but there are many which are now published for the first time. Two or three of these original chapters, form part of a work I had once projected, on the Poor of Paris, but which other avocations compelled me to abandon. They may, however, stimulate some inquirer who has the leisure to finish a task that could not fail to interest the English public. Chifi'ons and Cliifi'oniers; the Four Seasons in Prose; the French Waiter' s Story; Departed this Life in Paris; street-note and Paris under the Bees, are original chapters, in which the reader will find, if I am not mistaken, views of Parisian activity with which no book has yet made him acquainted. In the paper entitled The English Painted by the French, I have woven into one narrative, a series of quotations from various French writers, who have written recently on En g land. It presents, at a glance, a series of whimsical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Mysteries of Paris: A Novel The stranger replied not, but listened eagerly to her musical voice. Never had a more silvery sound greeted his ear. He longed to catch a glimpse of her features, but in vain; the night was too dark, the lamp too dim. After having remained motionless for several minutes, Chourineur began gradually to move his legs, his arms, and finally assumed an upright posture. Excerpt from The Ins and Outs of Paris, or Paris by Day and Night Paris has been often described, by travellers, by artists, by savants, by friends and by enemies, yet it was after reading most of the works descriptive of Paris that I felt how much there was still to be written, if not about Paris, at least about the Parisians. Excerpt from Old Paris: Its Court and Literary Salons Long years of Italian warfare, though most disas trous to France, enriched the royal library with valu able mss., and the palaces with many treasures of art, the spoil of the wars and Francis I. And some few of his nobles imbibed in Italy a taste for the ehefs-d'a'avre of sculpture, painting, and architecture. Several of its most renowned artists were prevailed on to visit the French court, but none Could be tempted to stay there though so great, we are told, was the veneration of Francis for learning and the arts, that when any distinguished savants, sculptors, or painters were presented to him, he graciously made a point of advancing three steps to greet them.
