The investigation of the cortical structure of stimulus-response pathways is the central subject of this book. The investigation comprises measurement of reaction times and recording of event-related potentials, the computer assisted evaluation of these empirical data and the mathematical description of these pathways. The investigation is completed by a hypothetical neural interpretation and a comparison of the pathways of healthy subjects, patients with brain tumors, and patients with schizophrenia. The author has chosen a completely new approach by describing the structure of the stimulus-response pathways by mathematical equations and by presenting a hypothetical neural interpretation of this structure, and by simulating these pathways in computer programs. This volume presents a neural theory of simple mental processes like stimulus-response sequences. Knowing the neural correlate of decision making would have far reaching consequences for the neurosciences. The readers will benefit from new insights into the physical substrate of mental processes.

The contributors to this volume are academics working directly or indirectly with teaching and learning centers and professional communities, serving in the capacity of educational developer, researcher, or specialist; unit manager or director; or senior administrator. Drawing on survey and interview data, individual experience or perspective, and familiarity with the educational literature, they offer a context to understand and appreciate how the field of educational development, developer practice, and individual pathways have evolved, further highlighting what territory remains to be explored and uncovered. Over the last fifty years, educational development has evolved from an informal set of instructional improvement activities championed by individuals to a scholarly field of study and practice that aims to advance teaching and learning at the individual, institutional and (more recently) sector levels. During this time, educational development work has moved from the fringes to the mainstream of the higher education landscape, bringing to the community a diverse group of dedicated academic professionals. This volume draws on their experience and insight to provide an invaluable guide to future challenges and issues. This is the 122nd volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Teaching and Learning, which offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

This work offers a guided walkthrough of one of the most promising research areas in modern life sciences, enabling a deeper understanding of involved concepts and methodologies via an interdisciplinary view, focusing on both well-established approaches and cutting-edge research. Highlighting what pathway analysis can offer to both the experimentalist and the modeler, the text opens with an introduction to a general methodology that outlines common workflows shared by several methods. This is followed by a review of pathway and sub-pathway based approaches for systems pharmacology. The work then presents an overview of pathway analysis methods developed to model the temporal aspects of drug- or disease-induced perturbations and extract relevant dynamic themes. The text concludes by discussing several state-of-the-art methods in pathway analysis, which address the important problem of identifying differentially expressed pathways and sub-pathways.

(Publisher-supplied data) This book represents the first systematic discussion of the Gateway Hypothesis, a developmental hypothesis formulated to model how adolescents initiate and progress in the use of various drugs. In the United States, this progression proceeds from the use of tobacco or alcohol to the use of marijuana and other illicit drugs. This volume presents a critical overview of what is currently known about the Gateway Hypothesis. The authors of the chapters explore the hypothesis from various perspectives ranging from developmental social psychology to prevention and intervention science, animal models, neurobiology and analytical methodology. This volume is original and unique in its purview, covering a broad view of the Gateway Hypothesis. The juxtaposition of epidemiological, intervention, animal and neurobiological studies represents a new stage in the evolution of drug research, in which epidemiology and biology inform one another in the understanding of drug abuse.

Investigative Pathways written by Frederic Lawrence Holmes and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-02-09 with Science categories.

This fascinating book is an investigation of scientific creativity. Following the research pathways of outstanding scientists over the past three centuries, it finds common features in their careers and their landmark discoveries and sheds light on the nature of long-term experimental research. Frederic Lawrence Holmes begins by discussing various approaches to the historical study of scientific practice. He then explains three kinds of analysis of the individual scientific life: broad-scale, which examines the phases of a scientist’s career—apprenticeship, mastery, distinction, and maturity—over a lifetime; middle-scale, which explores the episodes within such a career; and fine-scale, which scrutinizes laboratory notebooks and other data to focus on the daily interplay between thought and operation. Using these analyses, Holmes presents rich examples from his studies of six preeminent scientists: Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, Claude Bernard, Hans Krebs, Matthew Meselson, Franklin Stahl, and Seymour Benzer. The similar themes that he finds in their work and careers lead him to valuable insights into enduring issues and problems in understanding the scientific process.

"Rosamund Zander is a miracle. Her generous voice will resonate with you, change you and help you create work that matters." —Seth Godin, author of The Icarus Deception The bestselling author of The Art of Possibility returns with a new vision for achieving true human fulfillment that's sure to appeal to fans of Brene Brown's Daring Greatly and Elizabeth Gilbert's Big Magic As children, we develop stories about how the world works, most of which get improved upon and amended over time. But some do not, even as we mature in other ways. Opinionated, self-centered and fear-driven, these “child stories” are the source of the behavioral and emotional patterns that hold us back. When we learn to identify and rewrite these stories, limitless growth becomes possible. In her groundbreaking and inspiring new book, Rosamund Stone Zander shows us that life is a story we tell ourselves, and that we have the power to change that story. She illuminates how breaking old patterns and telling a new story can transform not just our own lives, but also our relationships with others—whether in a marriage, a classroom, or a business. Finally, she demonstrates how, with this new understanding of ourselves and our place within an interconnected world, we can take powerful action in the collective interest, and gain a sense of deep connection to the universe. Pathways to Possibility expands our notions of how much we can grow and change, whether we can affect others or the world at large, and how much freedom and joy we can experience. Stimulating and profound, it is the perfect companion to her beloved first book, The Art of Possibility.

Pathways To The Planets written by John R. Strand and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-11-05 with Science categories.

When my generation grew up, we were never limited by the sky or the stars. Man had already begun to probe its mysteries. Our mothers and fathers before us had created methods, maps, and ships that would forever change their planet and the way their children would view the world. So, when our small new-media company was offered the opportunity to work with John Strand and Pathways to the Planets, we all knew that it was a chance of a lifetime to work with someone who was instrumental in helping man reach that small rock in space called the moon. We live in the new world created by those brave pioneers and today are posed new frontiers; nano-science, cyberspace, molecular medicine, etc... All afforded to us humans, at least in part, by the extraordinary people portrayed in this book. Pathways to the Planets is a unique insight into the lives of those individuals as told through the memoirs of Astrophysicist John Strand. I personally, found this book to be an affirmation for anyone who seeks adventure and welcomes challenge and certainly a must read for those who were there (on earth!) during that exciting time. What a journey producing this book has been!
