The Politics of Wounds explores military patients' experiences of frontline medical evacuation, war surgery, and the social world of military hospitals during the First World War. The proximity of the front and the colossal numbers of wounded created greater public awareness of the impact of the war than had been seen in previous conflicts, with serious political consequences. Frequently referred to as 'our wounded', the central place of the soldier in society, as a symbol of the war's shifting meaning, drew contradictory responses of compassion, heroism, and censure. Wounds also stirred romantic and sexual responses. This volume reveals the paradoxical situation of the increasing political demand levied on citizen soldiers concurrent with the rise in medical humanitarianism and war-related charitable voluntarism. The physical gestures and poignant sounds of the suffering men reached across the classes, giving rise to convictions about patient rights, which at times conflicted with the military's pragmatism. Why, then, did patients represent military medicine, doctors and nurses in a negative light? The Politics of Wounds listens to the voices of wounded soldiers, placing their personal experience of pain within the social, cultural, and political contexts of military medical institutions. The author reveals how the wounded and disabled found culturally creative ways to express their pain, negotiate power relations, manage systemic tensions, and enact forms of 'soft resistance' against the societal and military expectations of masculinity when confronted by men in pain. The volume concludes by considering the way the state ascribed social and economic values on the body parts of disabled soldiers though the pension system.

`The author presents a plethora of infomation on users as individuals, their communities, research, healthcare markets and health service myths - old and new. It′s a cool academic appraisal of where the power lies and how more might be shared with the patient′ - Health Service Journal `Anything that helps us to understand the complexities of healthcare provision and what issues are important to users is therefore helpful. I welcome Christine Hogg′s excellent summary of the issues raised by users about healthcare services. It clearly informs readers of the debates that need to take place and of the issues that healthcare practitioners should address in order to better serve their users.... In early modern England, housewives, clergymen, bloodletters, herb women, and patients told authoritative tales about the body. By the end of the eighteenth century, however, medicine had begun to drown out these voices. This book argues that changes in the relationship between rich and poor underlay this rise in medicine's authority.

There is a rapidly growing number of patients' associations relating to a specific medical condition or illness (such as multiple sclerosis or motor neurone disease) but they have received little academic attention. Bruce Wood has surveyed over 200 of these associations in each of the USA and the UK. They have been marginalized in accounts of health policy and services and yet collectively they are 'big business'. They perceive themselves as being non-political support groups but they actually participate in much activity that is political. Patient Power? asks: * are these economically efficient and politically effective bodies? * is the US 'business' or the UK 'volunteer' model more successful? * are they truly independent organizations or have they been 'colonized' by the big vested interests in health? * are they a signal of a more assertive patient or consumer? * do they actually influence what health care people receive? This is a ground-breaking study in health policy and management, and will be important reading for scholars, students and professionals and, in particular, for those involved in running patient organizations.
