The text helps future teachers access the latest research and theory in an easily understood way, so the "big picture" is clear and they can confidently apply these concepts in their daily clinical teaching decisions. With more than 60 real-life vignettes, numerous LD simulations, and extensive illustrations of student work, the Fifth Edition helps future teachers understand the progression of learning, development, and social skills in the average student, how and why the patterns of the learning disabled differ, and why not all methods work for all children. Sensitized to family and school learning expectations and interaction patterns that can promote learning, future teachers learn how to match their interventions to each student's unique strength and weakness patterns in a way that is culturally affirming, takes advantage of instructional methods and technology that work, and promotes the skill set and social-emotional adjustment that will facilitate a student's transition to adult life.

Children and young people with Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD) have co-existing and overlapping conditions which can manifest in complex learning patterns, extreme behaviours and a range of socio-medical needs which are new and unfamiliar to many educators. Their combination of issues and layered needs – mental health, relationship, behavioural, physical, medical, sensory, communication and cognitive – mean they often disengage from learning and challenge even our most experienced teachers. This book provides school practitioners and leaders with an approach and resources to engage this often disenfranchized group of children in learning. The Engagement for Learning Framework has been developed and trialled by over 100 educational settings (both special and mainstream) with learners from early years to post-16. It gives practitioners from a range of disciplines a shared means of assessing, recording and developing personalized learning pathways and demonstrating progression for these children. The focus on inquiry means that however complex a young person’s needs, educators will be able to apply the approach. This practical and engaging book provides literature, tools and case study examples outlining who children and young people with CLDD are, why their engagement for learning is important and how the Engagement for Learning Framework can be used effectively by teachers and other professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for these children.

In a world where conformation to academic and behavioural patterns is considered a yardstick for success and intelligence, even the so-called most normal children have serious problems in proving themselves. Now imagine a child born with learning difficulties. He might be extremely creative or a wizard at problem solving but thanks to conditions like dyslexia or dyscalculia, which are actually easily manageable, he would have problems in even getting integrated into the system. This book stemming from author's firsthand experience and sensitive approach, guides us in effectively handling the learning difficulties. Let's be aware and appreciate the uniqueness of our children, for they deserve all our love and understanding — they deserve the best!

Over many years, I've analyzed dozens of books from various sources. I began by reading much of the literary editions promising immediate results, mostly from authors with background in psychology, offering memorization methods and concentration techniques, but nothing seemed to work. They didn’t work because were based on common sense, such as studying in quiet and well-lit locations, and also because, largely, they exposed scientific models of approach originating in the same social irrationality that was creating students with learning difficulties. In a society that considered the necessity of concentration as a fundamental and differential principle in the ability to learn, everything that was presented on learning followed the strengthening of that same social fallacy. The works available on the subject of learning appeared and appear to not consider what for society in general is not real – learning as a mental and emotional apprehension of reality. A forced retention of reality is promoted in our minds, as if it was possible to learn what you cannot comprehend, experience or apply with autonomy. Society has corrupted itself in the past centuries, and it is living in this situation with a natural and utter disregard for a constructive evolution of thousands of years. This has motivated me to analyze various works on mental health, namely, related to how the brain processes and analyses reality – which is normal and what is not. Inevitably, and as a consequence of the detachment towards the illusions of humanity, a new world was unveiled before my eyes, and with it new paths to know and discover. A good part of this new knowledge has changed my personality and altered my way of facing life forever.
