Scientists, educators, and parents of teens have long recognized the potency of peer influences on children and youth, but until recently, questions of how and why adolescents emulate their peers were largely overlooked. This book presents a comprehensive framework for understanding the processes by which peers shape each other's attitudes and behavior, and explores implications for intervention and prevention. Leading authorities share compelling findings on such topics as how drug use, risky sexual behavior, and other deviant behaviors "catch on" among certain peer groups or cliques; the social, cognitive, developmental, and contextual factors that strengthen or weaken the power of peer influence; and the nature of positive peer influences and how to support them.

Most people want to be accepted by their peers. Peer pressure can be a positive influence and encourage us to do our best, however it can also have negative consequences. The pressure to f̀it in' with friends, at school or at work can affect the way you talk, dress and behave. It can be direct, indirect, or sometimes the pressure can even come from yourself. Peer pressure can influence us to do something we usually would not do, or prevent us from doing something that we would like to do. This book is a useful guide in explaining what peer pressure is, where it comes from, and how it can affect us. Advice is given to young people (boys and girls), parents and teachers on how to identify and handle peer pressure, and looks at some specific examples - teenage popularity issues, bullying, risk-taking behaviours (dating pressures, sex, drugs), and social pressures to look and act certain ways. How can young people assert their individuality in the face of so many challengi- ng group influences?

Table of Contents Introduction Keeping up with the Joneses Psychological Implications of Peer Pressure Inculcating Moral Values Competition Repercussions of Peer Pressure Channelizing Competitiveness Interaction with Peers Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction This book is going to give you an introduction to peer pressure and what a great influence it has upon our lives. It has a number of anecdotes and real-life incidents related to my family, my classmates, and my colleagues. All of the incidents are real, even though they may seem very weird, and over the top! But that is what real life is like, most of the time! This book also has lots of inside knowledge about how peer pressure can influence you, and perhaps set the path on how you are going to behave for the rest of your life. For millenniums, man being a social animal has always felt an instinctive need to “fit in” with his comrades and the people around him. He would prefer being ordinary and run of the mill, as long as his friends, relatives and acquaintances accept him as one of them. However, any unusual behavior is going to isolate him from them. So this instinctive need to fit in with the crowd, will make a person get influenced by a group, individuals, or observers. This influence is going to be exerted on you consciously or subconsciously. It means that you are going to change your behavior, value, and even attitude in order to conform to your peer groups or to fit in with society. This sort of conforming begins in childhood itself. Just imagine a little child looking at another child’s clothes in the park or in the playground. He is too little to understand the meaning of possession but he thinks that he does not have something which the other child has. So he tells his parents that he wants that item.

Criminological research has largely neglected the possibility that positive peer influence is a potentially powerful source of social control. Quantitative methods tease out cause, effect, and spuriousness in the relationship between peer delinquency and personal delinquency, but these methods do little or nothing to reveal how and why peers might influence each other toward--or away from--deviance. Costello and Hope take a first step toward uncovering the mechanisms of peer influence, drawing on quantitative and qualitative data collected from two convenience samples of university students. Their quantitative analyses showed that positive peer influence occurs most frequently among those who associate with the most deviant peers and self-report the most deviance, contrary to predictions drawn from social learning theories. Their qualitative data revealed a variety of methods of negative influence, including encouraging deviant behavior for others' amusement, a motive for peer influence never before reported in the literature.

Teenage cliques, jihadist cells, army units, polar expeditions, and football hooligans – on the face of it, each of these groups might seem exceptional, but the forces that bind and drive them can affect us all. In recent decades, psychologists have uncovered how and why our innate socialness holds huge sway over how we think and act, propelling us to both high achievement and unthinking cruelty. We are beholden to our peers, even when we think we’re calling the shots. This is the power of others. In this captivating work, science writer Michael Bond investigates the latest breakthroughs in social psychology to reveal how to guard against groupthink, build better teamwork, identify shared objectives, become more ethical, and survive moments of isolation. A fascinating blend of evolutionary theory, behavourial science, and remarkable case studies, The Power of Others will teach you to truly harness your collective self.
