Seorang konselor mempunyai tanggung jawab untuk membantu konseli agar dapat berkembang secara optimal. Untuk dapat memahami individu atau peserta didik dengan sebaik-baiknya, seorang konselor perlu melakukan pengumpulan data atau asesmen (assessment) yang lengkap dan akurat tentang individu tersebut. Seluruh aspek tersebut diperoleh melalui bantuan teknik, metode dan cara yang dikembangkan oleh konselor melalui masing-masing media pemeriksaan psikologis dalam proses asesmen, baik menggunakan teknik non tes seperti observasi, wawancara, DCM dan sebagainya maupun menggunakan teknik tes seperti tes inteligensi, bakat dan minat. Buku pedoman praktik pemahaman individu menyajikan konsep dari masing-masing alat ukur, menguraikan prosedur, tahapan-tahapan dalam melakukan praktik pemahaman individu, dan pedoman dalam menyusun laporan praktikum, baik praktik teknik non tes maupun teknik tes.
