Selama berbakti di Batan banyak hasil karya yang dihasilkan, baik di bidang energi terbarukan maupun pengembangan bahan maju. Dan beberapa prestasi telah diapresiasi oleh Kementerian Riset dan Teknologi Indonesia maupun dari Malaysia. Pilihan Idealisme mengandung makna pilihan sesuai idealismenya sebagai peneliti dan inovator yang akan menjadi motor pergerakkannya yang diharapkan menjadi bekal untuk mendukung kehidupan di hari tuanya. Idelismenya setelah pensiun tidak bekerja lagi dan tinggal menikmati hasil karya yang dilakukan sebelumnya untuk dapat menjadi dukungan kehidupannya. Pilihan bidang inovasi harus ditentukan dengan melihat potensi teknologi masa depan yang akan digunakan untuk pengembangan inovasi di berbagai bidang. Sehingga teknologi suara, electric dan teknologi plasma menjadi backbound beberapa riset dan inovasinya. Walaupun hanya sedikit inovasi yang akhirnya pada masa setelah pensiun diteruskan berkembang untuk membangun sebuah start up baru seperti PT. Prima Tirta Tekno Solusindo (PTTS), PT. Graphene Nanomaterials Consulting (G’NomaC), PT. Cipta Mikro Material (CMiM) dan yang terakhir PT. Teknologi Sirkular Biru (TSB). PTTS sebagai perusahaan berbasis teknologi yang bergerak di bidang pengolahan air bersih dan limbah cair dengan teknologi electric dan electro chemical processing. Dengan dukungan pengembangan material maju “grafena”, yang sebelumnya dikembangkan oleh PT. G’NomaC dan Pusat Penelitian Fisika, LIPI dan berlanjut menjadi Pusat Penelitian Material Maju, Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN). G’NomaC sebagai perusahaan berbasis riset dan inovasi material karbon baru (graphene) telah menghasilkan patent bersama BRIN untuk proses produksi graphene berbahan baku biomassa dan akan dimanfaatkan di berbagai bidang termasuk akan digunakan sebagai filter untuk PTTS. CMiM sebagai perusahaan layanan karakterisasi dan pengujian berperan sebagai kunci pengembangan material maju dan telah pula memperoleh kepercayaan dari Universitas Surya untuk mendukung penelitian proses optimasi ekstraksi Silika dan Litium dari sumber bahan baku brine baik berupa slurry maupun sludge dari pembangkit panas bumu di Dieng dari PT. Geo Dipa Energi (Geodipa). Tulisan SATU sampai LIMA sebagai tulisan perjalanan tersebut, semoga menjadi bacaan yang menarik untuk digunakan sebagai acuan untuk mencapai idealisme para pembaca, akademisi, peneliti dan inovator di Indonesia kedepannya.

Global value chains (GVCs) powered the surge of international trade after 1990 and now account for almost half of all trade. This shift enabled an unprecedented economic convergence: poor countries grew rapidly and began to catch up with richer countries. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, however, the growth of trade has been sluggish and the expansion of GVCs has stalled. Meanwhile, serious threats have emerged to the model of trade-led growth. New technologies could draw production closer to the consumer and reduce the demand for labor. And trade conflicts among large countries could lead to a retrenchment or a segmentation of GVCs. World Development Report 2020: Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains examines whether there is still a path to development through GVCs and trade. It concludes that technological change is, at this stage, more a boon than a curse. GVCs can continue to boost growth, create better jobs, and reduce poverty provided that developing countries implement deeper reforms to promote GVC participation; industrial countries pursue open, predictable policies; and all countries revive multilateral cooperation.

The “middle-income trap” is the phenomenon of hitherto rapidly growing economies stagnating at middle-income levels and failing to graduate into the ranks of high-income countries. In this study we examine the middle-income trap as a special case of growth slowdowns, which are identified as large sudden and sustained deviations from the growth path predicted by a basic conditional convergence framework. We then examine their determinants by means of probit regressions, looking into the role of institutions, demography, infrastructure, the macroeconomic environment, output structure and trade structure. Two variants of Bayesian Model Averaging are used as robustness checks. The results—including some that indeed speak to the special status of middle-income countries—are then used to derive policy implications, with a particular focus on Asian economies.

Building on his contributions to institutional legal theory in Institutional Legal Facts of 1993 (Law and Philosophy Library, volume 18), the author presents a comprehensive theory of legal institutions. To that end, the initial theoretical approach, which mainly concentrated on problems connected with legal powers and legal acts (acts-in-law), is widened to allow for the development of a theory of legal judgements capable of accounting not only for enacted but also unwritten law (legal principles and customary law). With the use of the concept of institutional legal facts, the structure of legal institutions is analyzed in detail. In addition to that, a classification of legal institutions is provided. Extensive attention is given to logical, as well as doctrinal problems connected with a conception of legal validity as the mode of existence of legal conditions rather than as a value of legal norms similar to the truth of propositions. The study results in an elaborate conceptual framework for institutional analysis of positive law. In a final chapter the analytical potential of the framework is put to the test by applying it to the branch of public international law known as the `law of treaties'.
