Culture and religion are basic to every human society, and the history of a people always sustains her cultural and religious values. We decided to use the African culture and religion as our departing point for the mere fact that Africa is generally considered as the cradle of civilization, and it is a very historic and controversial continent. However, while examining some prominent world cultures and religions (in a comparative manner), our major focus is on the Christian-Thomistic culture/religion as illustrated by Jacques Maritain in comparison with the African culture/religion as expressed by Joseph Ki-Zerbo. Both thinkers consider that in the midst of multiculturalism and globalization, authentic humanism or personalism that is based on the sacredness of the human person should be endorsed as a new civilization or culture. Only such a culture can make the future of humankind essentially meaningful and interesting.Shifting from all mediocre standards of culture which are based on relativism, supported by postmodern thinkers, there is a need to get back to the original culture that is based on authentic and objective standards. The major difference that we noticed between the Thomistic-Christian ideas and those of the Africans is that while Jacques Maritain appeals for Thomistic humanism to grow from the formal classrooms and the books into the streets and the fields, Ki-Zerbo explains that African humanism has always existed in the streets and in the fields; it might never even have existed in the books and in the classrooms. The global reaction toward the killing of George Floyd in USA, defying all fears of the COVID-19, intensifies the argument that a culture which qualifies one race as being superior over another has to be reexamined and radically eradicated and replaced by authentic humanism.

What, at best, has been mentioned in previous monographs about Himmler as the second most powerful man of National-Socialism in passing, the historian Franz Wegener develops in greater depth: Himmler’s mind was open to diverse occult influences originating in Germany as well as France. Thus he wrote about a book of the German spiritualist, Carl du Prel, who experimented with hovering tables and mediums: “A small scientific work on a philosophical basis which truly has me believe in spiritualism and was the first to really introduce me to it.” He received Gaston de Mengel, a British occultist, who wrote for the mysterious occult group of the Polaires in Paris, and who collaborated closely with the founder of the esoteric university in Nice. As researched by Wegener, Himmler purchased himself a manual for “pendulum practice and pendulum magic,” and in this way came also in touch with the theory of the gnostic “Od.” He believed in the “transmigration of souls,” attempted to obtain horoscopes from a Munich astrologer and his various occult advisors, and agreed with the hypotheses of Karl Heise (“Okkultes Logentum,” 1921) that occult powers were pulling the strings behind Communists, Jews, and Freemasons. On this background Wegener does not allow Himmler’s tendency about occult subjects pass as a mere private matter: “If Himmler’s image of the enemy with respect to Freemasonry and Jews was fed also by occult patterns, one can no longer speak of a ‘private matter,’ since the political and, by no means, private consequence of Himmler’s occult world view must be called mass murder."

The basic aim of this special issue is to focus on the profound change of tendency in education that is taking place at both the national and interna tional level. At a time when education and lifelong learning are increasingly merging into one process, it is important to examine the ways in which edu cational policies and practices are evolving. Consequently, we invited a variety of contributors, both men and women, coming from different regions and encompassing both research and practice, to identify significant phenomena and trends that are indicative of the ways in which systems of education are responding to new social and cultural demands.
