In recent years, economic life has become increasingly politicized: now, every company has a ‘philosophy’, promising its customers some ethical surplus in return for buying their products; consumers shop for change; workers engage in individualized forms of employee activism such as whistleblowing; and governments contribute to the re-configuration of the economic sphere as a site of political contestation by reminding corporate and private economic actors of their duty to ‘do their bit’. The Politics of Economic Life addresses this trend by exploring the ways in which practices of consumption, work, production, and entrepreneurship are imbued with political strategy and ideology, and assesses the potentials and perils of the politicization of economic activity for democracy in the 21st century.

Tocqueville S Political Economy written by Richard Swedberg and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-02 with Business & Economics categories.

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-59) has long been recognized as a major political and social thinker as well as historian, but his writings also contain a wealth of little-known insights into economic life and its connection to the rest of society. In Tocqueville's Political Economy, Richard Swedberg shows that Tocqueville had a highly original and suggestive approach to economics--one that still has much to teach us today. Through careful readings of Tocqueville's two major books and many of his other writings, Swedberg lays bare Tocqueville's ingenious way of thinking about major economic phenomena. At the center of Democracy in America, Tocqueville produced a magnificent analysis of the emerging entrepreneurial economy that he found during his 1831-32 visit to the United States. More than two decades later, in The Old Regime and the Revolution, Tocqueville made the complementary argument that it was France's blocked economy and society that led to the Revolution of 1789. In between the publication of these great works, Tocqueville also produced many lesser-known writings on such topics as property, consumption, and moral factors in economic life. When examined together, Swedberg argues, these books and other writings constitute an interesting alternative model of economic thinking, as well as a major contribution to political economy that deserves a place in contemporary discussions about the social effects of economics.

Our Economic Life A General Social Science written by Thomas Nixon Carver and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-15 with Business & Economics categories.

Excerpt from Our Economic Life a General Social Science Throughout the centuries man has been progressing - more and more rapidly since the time of the Industrial Revolution. Large-scale production has given us powerful slaves in the form of machinery, but has made us almost completely dependent upon the machine, our life work and our means of enjoyment alike conditioned by its use. Division of labor has been the natural consequence of the establishment of the machine era, and as such division has grown more and more minute our dependence upon one another has become correspondingly greater. There are certain laws and forces continually at work in this complex life of ours, and many of us do not realize that they even exist. An American banker has said that the American people are "economic illiterates" - that we do not know the ABC's of the business world in which we live. Social problems resulting from our more complex lives are growing up more rapidly than we are able to solve them, while the corruption so often found in politics bears mute testimony to our ignorance of, or indifference to, those underlying political principles upon which all good government must be based. This book does not pretend to give a complete exposition of the economic, sociological, and political principles underlying our group life. But it does try to give a basis upon which the boys and girls may build a better understanding of such sciences from their own activities and from the information which they glean from books, magazines, and newspapers. Furthermore, it attempts to give them some standards by which they may evaluate the everyday occurrences of their everyday lives, and some appreciation of their share in the preservation and development of the group life. The Political Economy Of Human Happiness written by Benjamin Radcliff and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-25 with Political Science categories.

Data, methods and theories of contemporary social science can be applied to resolve how political outcomes in democratic societies determine the quality of life that citizens experience. Radcliff seeks to provide an objective answer to the debate between left and right over what public policies best contribute to people leading positive and rewarding lives. Radcliff offers an empirical answer, relying on the same canons of reason and evidence required of any other issue amenable to study through social-scientific means. The analysis focuses on the consequences of three specific political issues: the welfare state and the general size of government, labor organization, and state efforts to protect workers and consumers through economic regulation. The results indicate that in each instance, the program of the Left best contributes to citizens leading more satisfying lives and, critically, that the benefits of greater happiness accrue to everyone in society, rich and poor alike.
