La storia del terrorismo in Italia è raccontata sempre dal punto di vista dei carnefici. Le vittime sono sullo sfondo, dimenticate. In pochi sanno che faccia avesse Luigi Calabresi, il primo assassinato dalla violenza politica organizzata in Italia nel 1972, in molti conoscono le sembianze del mandante del suo omicidio. La lunga scia di sangue passa dall'assassinio di Moro, dalla strage di Bologna e arriva fino al 2010 quando Bruno Fortunato, ultima vittima delle Nuove Br, si spara un colpo in testa dopo aver dichiarato: "I terroristi mi hanno ferito, lo Stato mi ha abbandonato". Il terrorismo rosso delle Br o di Prima Linea, quello nero di Ordine Nuovo o dei Nar, è solo l'elenco di cinquanta assassini con una caratteristica, insopportabile: sono tutti fuori dal carcere. Hanno causato quasi cinquecento morti, oltre mille feriti e non sono in galera. Anzi sono editori, scrittori, giornalisti, sono stati persino parlamentari. Questo libro rende onore alle vittime, le cita tutte una per una, trattando gli assassini per quel che sono: pochi criminali che potevano essere sgominati e quando si è deciso di farlo davvero, in un paio d'anni si sono liquefatti.

"L'indagine impossibile" segue un tema ben preciso: la possibile connessione tra le basi italiane della Nato e il terrorismo degli anni di piombo. Chi erano i terroristi delle Brigate Rosse che il 16 marzo del 1978 rapirono l'ex presidente del consiglio Aldo Moro? Secondo una dietrologia di marca comunista, che certi storici attuali rifiutano, dietro i passamontagna di quei banditi si nascondevano uomini di Ordine Nuovo, ossia della destra eversiva delle bombe. Nel delineare la cosiddetta "Strategia della tensione", quindi, sarebbe stata prevista, oltre alle stragi, la creazione di falsi gruppi di sinistra, i quali avrebbero avuto il compito di inquinare la politica socialista, seminare il panico nelle strade e a quel punto far ricadere le colpe sul Partito Comunista. Il colpevole di questa storia alla rovescia, in cui gli sconfitti del Patto di Varsavia diventano gli accusatori, sarebbe la Nato, l'organizzazione militare dell'Occidente capitalista, sospettata di aver nascosto a Roma alcuni pericolosi uomini della CIA, veri mandanti di questo presunto complotto. Ma per arrivare a una verità oggettiva bisogna uscire dal dualismo est-ovest, e confrontare i dossier delle spie dell'est con gli articoli dei quotidiani italiani ed esteri, con i documenti parlamentari italiani, con quelli della CIA, e con le notizie del web. Si scopre così che questi 007 americani sarebbero diventati, successivamente, leader della guerra contro il terrorismo islamico di Saddam Hussein. E che la fuga dalla dittatura comunista è un mito che andrebbe ridimensionato. L'impressione tuttavia è che manchi qualcosa: un elemento che convinse i "paesi socialisti" a non proseguire in questa denuncia. Se è vero che alcuni terroristi di Ordine Nuovo erano presenti nel terrorismo rosso, è stato altrettanto accertato, persino dai sovietici, che vi era uno stretto legame tra brigatisti, palestinesi e soprattutto maoisti, molto attivi e rumorosi nella sinistra extraparlamentare nata dal '68. La Cina è il vero grande enigma della storia contemporanea: comunista a livello ideologico, ma vicina alle posizioni e alle scelte militari degli statunitensi fin dalla metà degli anni Sessanta. Potevano dunque coesistere le numerose basi missilistiche e logistiche italiane della Nato con la sanguinosa guerra tra gli opposti estremismi, nonché tra il terrorismo e le personalità dello Stato, a cui gli italiani assistettero negli anni Settanta? Molti documenti attestano che la politica internazionale della Guerra Fredda e il terrorismo di sinistra avevano svariati elementi in comune. Vi fu probabilmente una guerra nella guerra, che mise non solo uomini di destra contro uomini di sinistra, ma pure servizi segreti contro servizi deviati, e militari onesti accanto a commilitoni appartenenti a Gladio-Stay Behind, cioè all'apparato militare creato per contrastare una rivoluzione comunista. Da uno scenario così complesso è scaturita una storia documentata della "Strategia della tensione" che può trasformarsi in una buona chiave di lettura per comprendere anche il terrorismo attuale, quello dell'Islam radicale.

Dopo interminabili indagini giudiziarie e rinnovate ipotesi storiografiche, gli autori di questo libro, esaminando i materiali delle commissioni Moro, P2, Stragi, Mitrokhin, gli atti dei processi e degli archivi dell’Est, e documenti “riservatissimi” mai resi pubblici, hanno tracciato una linea interpretativa sinora inedita, restituendo quel tragico evento a una più ampia cornice storica e geopolitica, senza la quale è impossibile arrivare alla verità. La loro inchiesta chiama in causa la “doppia anima” della politica italiana, le contraddizioni generate dalla diplomazia parallela voluta dai nostri governi all’inizio degli anni Settanta e, in particolare, lo sconvolgimento degli equilibri internazionali provocato dall’omicidio di Aldo Moro, vero garante di un patto con il Fronte popolare per la liberazione della Palestina finalizzato a evitare atti terroristici nel nostro paese. Senza questo viaggio a ritroso nel tempo è impossibile capire la stagione del terrorismo italiano culminata nell’esplosione del 2 agosto 1980.

Ending Terrorism in Italy analyses processes of disengagement from terrorism, as well as the connected issues of reconciliation, truth and justice. It examines in a critical and original way how terrorism came to an end in Italy (Part I), and the legacy it has left behind (Part II). The book interrogates a wide array of published memoirs and a considerable number of new face-to-face interviews with both former terrorists and first and second generation victims In the last two decades, and especially in recent years, former extreme-right terrorists in Italy have started to talk about their past involvement in terrorist violence, including, for the first time, acts of violence which have for decades been considered taboo, that is to say, bomb attacks against innocent civilians. These narratives add to the perspectives offered by members of left-wing terrorist groups, such as the Red Brigades and Prima Linea. Surprisingly, these narratives have not been systematically examined, yet they form a unique and extremely rich source of first-hand testimony, providing invaluable insights into processes of youth radicalization and de-radicalization, the social re-integration of ex-terrorists, as well as personal and collective healing. Even less attention has been paid to the victims’ narratives or stories. Indeed, the views and activities of the victims and their associations have been seriously neglected in the scholarly literature on terrorism, not just in Italy, but elsewhere in Europe. The book therefore examines the perspectives of the victims and relatives of victims of terrorism, who over the years have formed dedicated associations and campaigned relentlessly to obtain justice through the courts, with little or no support from the state and, especially in the case of the bombing massacres, with increasing awareness that the state played a role in thwarting the course of justice. Ending Terrorism in Italy will be of interest to historians, social scientists and policy makers as well as students of political violence and post-conflict resolution. .

Forty years after his election to the White House, it was deemed necessary to reflect on the political activity of a President little considered, until now, by the Italian historiography. The Carter Presidency, inspired since its inception by a predominant religious sentiment, was marked by a clear break with the past. Themes such as the respect for human rights, dialogue with the historic Soviet enemy, pacifism as a weapon of the Middle East problem resolution, industrial development through a sustainable approach were introduced right from the thirty-ninth occupant of the White House. At the presidential elections of 1980, which saw him clash with the Republican Ronald Reagan, Carter paid especially the failures of his reform and economic policy: the US economic difficulties and the significant increase in the unemployment rate were the main reasons that cost him his reelection. Reformism, pacifism, respect for human rights: concepts that would continue to inspire Carter’s policy, despite the defeat against Reagan.

The Italian Far Right from 1945 to the Russia–Ukraine Conflict provides a comprehensive account of the postwar parliamentary and extra parliamentary far right in Italy. This book explores the ideology, movements and activism of the extreme right and neo- fascists. The recent victory in the Italian parliamentary elections of the ‘post-fascist’ party Fratelli d’Italia and its leader Giorgia Meloni highlights the importance of such research. The book examines why some of these movements participated with CIA- backing in the ‘Strategy of Tension’ in the years of the Cold War where terrorist actions aimed to keep Italy in NATO and prevent the Communist Party from coming to power, while other extreme- right groups vehemently opposed this and what they considered the dangerous ‘Americanization’ of the country. It debunks the myth that there was a unified postwar fascist movement in Italy, but instead excavates the complex battles within the extreme right as well as with their opponents from the left, and the authorities. This study is necessary to clarify the history and ideological dynamics of a political area still too often shrouded in mystery and whose geopolitical role is still poorly understood and generally underestimated. The analysis is contextualized in the present day by looking at the different perspectives of the Italian far right on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
