A mysterious romantic thriller set in the late 1940s, Peripheral Lies tells the story of how several lives become entangled in a government operation that includes a web of deceit, murder, and international crime. Laura Chandler is the number one suspect in the murder investigation of Mark Swenson, a wealthy businessman, and she doesn't know where to turn for help. Paul Lambert, an attorney who is clueless about the mysterious happenings in his own law office, is sure of one thing-his undeniable attraction to his new secretary, Sheila Connery. But Lambert's assistant has a secret-she is working for the FBI as one of the first female agents in history. Sheila has gone undercover to investigate the CIA's involvement in 'Operation Paperclip, ' a covert government manoeuvre to smuggle German rocket scientists and interrogation specialists out of Nazi Germany and into the United States. As Sheila defies the chauvinistic attitudes of the Deep South, she desperately hopes to discover who not only killed but mutilated her brother, Jimmy. Did Laura really kill Mark Swenson? In Peripheral Lies, Sheila may find much more than she expects on the quest to find her brother's murderer

The peripheral nervous system is usually defined as the cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and peripheral ganglia which lie outside the brain and spinal cord. To describe the structure and function of this system in one book may have been possible last century. Today, only a judicious selection is possible. It may be fairly claimed that the title of this book is not misleading, for in keeping the text within bounds only accounts of olfaction, vision, audition, and vestibular function have been omitted, and as popularly understood these topics fall into the category of special senses. This book contains a comprehensive treatment of the structure and function of peripheral nerves (including axoplasmic flow and trophic func tions); junctional regions in the autonomic and somatic divisions of the peripheral nervous system; receptors in skin, tongue, and deeper tissues; and the integrative role of ganglia. It is thus a handbook of the peripheral nervous system as it is usually understood for teaching purposes. The convenience of having this material inside one set of covers is already proven, for my colleagues were borrowing parts of the text even while the book was in manuscript. It is my belief that lecturers will find here the information they need, while graduate students will be able to get a sound yet easily read account of results of research in their area. JOHN 1. Fully updated and revised according to student feedback, the sixth edition of Mayo Clinic Medical Neurosciences: Organized by Neurologic System and Level provides a systematic approach to anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the nervous system inspired by the neurologist's approach to solving clinical problems. This volume has 4 sections: 1) an overview of the neurosciences necessary for understanding anatomical localization and pathophysiologic characterization of neurologic disorders; 2) an approach to localizing lesions in the 7 longitudinal systems of the nervous system; 3) an approach to localizing lesions in the 4 horizontal levels of the nervous system; and 4) a collection of clinical problems. This book provides the neuroscience framework to support the neurologist in a clinical setting and is also a great resource for neurology and psychiatry board certifications. This is the perfect guide for all medical students and neurology, psychiatry, and physical medicine residents at early stages of training. New to This Edition - A chapter devoted to multiple-choice questions for self-assessment - Discussion of emerging concepts in molecular, cellular, and system neurosciences - New chapters on emotion and consciousness systems - Incorporation of new discoveries in neuroimaging and an appendix for tables of medications commonly used to treat neurologic disorders

As science advances at breakneck speed, it becomes harder to make new discoveries and chart uncharted territory. Yet The Deep Pull: A Major Advance in the Science of Ocean Tides does just that. This book offers the world a new model of tide formation that can actually find a pattern in previously unintelligible tide data and be applied to both oceanic and atmospheric tides. At the heart of this new model is a new theory on where lunisolar gravitational forces act. With this simple key, the author opens a new way of understanding a centuries-old science. Written for anyone with an interest in the mechanics behind natural phenomena, Walter Hayduk takes the readers through his thought process behind his new discovery. His accessible and engaging, step-by-step manner of uncovering a new paradigm through the exploration of data, analogies, and natural phenomena – from the Bay of Fundy’s incredible tides to tornadoes – provides the reader with the excitement of his or her own eureka moment of understanding the secret of the tides.

How does peripherality challenge methodology and theory-making? This book examines how the peripheral can be incorporated into ethnographic research, and reflects on what it means to be on the periphery – ontologically and epistemologically. Starting from the premise that clarity and fixity as ideals of modernity prevent us from approaching that which cannot be easily captured and framed into scientific boundaries, the book argues for remaining on the boundary between the known and the unknown in order to surpass this ethnographic limit. Peripheral Methodologies shows that peripherality is not only to be seen as a marginal condition, but rather as a form of theory-making and practice that incorporates reflexivity and experimentation. Instead of domesticating the peripheral, the authors engage in (and insist on) practicing expertise in reverse, unlearning their tools in order to integrate the empirical and analytical otherwise.

This first of its kind richly illustrated book provides a tabular and schematic representation of all the peripheral nerves in the human body using a standardized landmark-based algorithm for the definition of the nerve’s “Point of optimal visibility (POV)”. In this atlas the nerves of the human body are depicted with high-frequent ultrasound probes with frequencies up to 24 MHz: it presents not only the “known” large nerves (N. ischiadicus, N. femoralis, N. medianus etc.), but also the tiny nerves you have learned in your anatomy sessions but forgotten in the course of time! Based on clear illustrations using palpaple/visible external and easily accessible internal landmarks, it offers “nerve sonographers” a clear sonoanatomic guidance on how to easily find the nerve. Additionally, it describes the exact positioning of the probe so that each nerve can be found at its point of optimal visibility. These mental maps for nerve sonographeurs are intended not only for beginners but also for “advanced” specialists requiring instructions on how to easily find even tiny peripheral nerves: especially for neurologists, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, pain practionioners, rheumatologists and surgeons who seek a clear standardized step by step manual on “Where do I find a nerve the easiest?”
