The Red Brigades were a far-left terrorist group in Italy formed in 1970 and active all through the 1980s. Infamous around the world for a campaign of assassinations, kidnappings, and bank robberies intended as a "concentrated strike against the heart of the State," the Red Brigades’ most notorious crime was the kidnapping and murder of Italy’s former prime minister Aldo Moro in 1978. In the late 1990s, a new group of violent anticapitalist terrorists revived the name Red Brigades and killed a number of professors and government officials. Like their German counterparts in the Baader-Meinhof Group and today’s violent political and religious extremists, the Red Brigades and their actions raise a host of questions about the motivations, ideologies, and mind-sets of people who commit horrific acts of violence in the name of a utopia. In the first English edition of a book that has won critical acclaim and major prizes in Italy, Alessandro Orsini contends that the dominant logic of the Red Brigades was essentially eschatological, focused on purifying a corrupt world through violence. Only through revolutionary terror, Brigadists believed, could humanity be saved from the putrefying effects of capitalism and imperialism. Through a careful study of all existing documentation produced by the Red Brigades and of all existing scholarship on the Red Brigades, Orsini reconstructs a worldview that can be as seductive as it is horrifying. Orsini has devised a micro-sociological theory that allows him to reconstruct the group dynamics leading to political homicide in extreme-left and neonazi terrorist groups. This "subversive-revolutionary feedback theory" states that the willingness to mete out and suffer death depends, in the last analysis, on how far the terrorist has been incorporated into the revolutionary sect. Orsini makes clear that this political-religious concept of historical development is central to understanding all such self-styled "purifiers of the world." From Thomas Müntzer’s theocratic dream to Pol Pot’s Cambodian revolution, all the violent "purifiers" of the world have a clear goal: to build a perfect society in which there will no longer be any sin and unhappiness and in which no opposition can be allowed to upset the universal harmony. Orsini’s book reconstructs the origins and evolution of a revolutionary tradition brought into our own times by the Red Brigades.

Chi ha portato la bomba esplosa in piazza Fontana? E quella in piazza della Loggia a Brescia? Quanti neofascisti erano presenti a Bologna il giorno della strage alla stazione? Quale rete di mandanti e complici ha voluto e favorito le stragi? Non a tutte queste domande è stata data risposta. C’è ancora una parte buia della storia, dicono le sentenze. Ma c’è chi, in queste tenebre, continua a cercare. Gli autori ricostruiscono i giorni e i minuti che hanno preceduto le stragi – le “stragi politiche” – e gli identikit e i nomi, alcuni mai fatti prima, di chi le ha eseguite. E l’ambiente, la trama da cui sono scaturite, che conduce dentro le casematte stragiste e cospirative, negli apparati di Stato italiani e atlantici. Nel fondo nero dell’attacco alla Repubblica, sferrato per lunghi e sanguinosi anni contro la “tigre” del cambiamento, così temuta dai reazionari di ogni tipo, contro l’innovazione sociale e politica e lo sviluppo della democrazia sotto il segno della Costituzione. Due fili incandescenti si snodano. Il filo rosso sangue delle stragi, da piazza Fontana a Bologna, e il filo nero dei colpi di Stato minacciati o tentati ma comunque incombenti. Si compone così una “verità d’insieme”, che arriva ai mandanti e ai responsabili politici della strategia eversiva, figure di assoluto rilievo istituzionale e politico – davvero i “gelidi mostri” di Nietzsche – oltre a funzionari e agenti di apparati chiave dello Stato e alla rete terroristica neofascista. Indagare, scavare nelle stragi e nelle trame, cercare la verità anche oltre le risultanze processuali significa dar conto di cosa sia davvero avvenuto in Italia in quei decenni cruciali la cui ombra si allunga fino a oggi.

Genova, 1970. La bomba di piazza Fontana, il timore di un colpo di Stato e dell'instaurazione di un regime neofascista spinge un piccolo gruppo di giovani sottoproletari - cresciuti in un quartiere della periferia operaia - e qualche ex partigiano che si riconosce nelle delusioni di una Resistenza tradita, all'azione concreta. Trasmissioni radio, interferenze sul primo canale della Rai per spingere alla mobilitazione, incendi e sabotaggi ad aziende messe nel mirino, attività illegali per finanziarsi (dalle rapine al rapimento del figlio di una tra le famiglie più in vista della città) sono le strategie cui ricorrono. Alcuni di loro sono iscritti al Pci, altri lo sono stati, altri sentono solo di non essere rappresentati. Non hanno nome, ma si rifanno ai Gap, i Gruppi di azione partigiana e alla strategia della guerriglia sudamericana. Pensano a una nuova Resistenza e a una rivoluzione di stampo cubano. Entrano in contatto con progetti e percorsi non del tutto chiari, incrociano altre vite, come quella di Giangiacomo Feltrinelli. Sono solo gli esordi di quella che passerà alla storia come Banda XXII Ottobre. Un nome creato dalla stampa, che si riferisce alla data di un biglietto ferroviario trovato nelle tasche di Mario Rossi, il capo della banda. Ma la vicenda di queste persone s'intreccia a quella di chi, vent'anni dopo la Liberazione, pensava che la Resistenza dovesse avere una nuova fiammata: quella della svolta definitiva del Paese in senso rivoluzionario.

E quella R4 color amaranto, modello Export, acquistata nel 1971 da Filippo Bartoli, divenne di tutti. A partire dal momento in cui, il 9 maggio 1978, dopo 253.839 chilometri di vita, smise di respirare insieme al corpo che trasportava. Lui era l'uomo più importante d'Italia. Lei l'auto più venduta di Francia. Era nata a Billancourt, la fabbrica parigina che aveva modellato il volto di una nazione. Nelle sue officine avevano lavorato il leader cinese Deng Xiaoping, il fotografo Robert Doisneau, la filosofa Simone Weil, il cantautore Georges Brassens e persino Gusztáv Sebes, l'allenatore della Grande Ungheria. Ma non solo loro. Dentro quegli stabilimenti, germogliati nel giardino della madre di Louis Renault, si erano mosse altre esistenze destinate ad attraversare due conflitti mondiali, la Guerra fredda, il Sessantotto, la crisi economica e la lotta armata. Seguendo quel filo lunghissimo che lega un'origine a un epilogo, riga dopo riga Piero Trellini ci trascina in un incredibile viaggio, dentro una storia che va vista dal basso, dove sono i fari delle auto a guidarci. Sarà la lenta trasformazione delle loro teste, attraverso una catena invisibile di anelli, a deviare la storia, portando quell'auto e quei pensieri a respirare la stessa aria e a intraprendere il medesimo tragitto. Per ritrovarsi, nelle ultime strepitose pagine, sovrapposti e coincidenti dentro la più drammatica delle coordinate.
