The authors are experts in the field and provide an up-to-date and comprehensive review covering all aspects of the disease. The book is divided into seven chapters highlighting genome organization, virus replication and the determinants of virulence, pathophysiology and clinical disease, immunology and immunopathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnostic assays and vaccines, and the challenges concerning global eradication. It is an invaluable reference work, presenting the latest information for virologists, microbiologists, immunologists, veterinarians, and scientists working in PPR research.

This book subtly presents the Peste des Petits Ruminants Virus (PPRV), a morbillivirus closely related to rinderpest virus, that decimates sheep and goats along with those of other susceptible domestic ruminants and many wildlife species. Following its first introduction to the West Africa in 1940, PPRV was rapidly disseminated across sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Southern Asia. Recent outbreaks of PPR in Morocco and European part of Turkey are posing continuous threats to many European countries. This book focuses on the key dynamics of this deadly disease, and incorporates considerable historical detail, infection biology, comparative molecular biology, and pathophysiology of the disease. The accurate disease diagnosis, management, and prevention of the disease are crucial for clinicians. Thus, three chapters emphasize the traditional prophylactic measures, clinical outcome of the disease and clinical disease assessments. The genomic organization and molecularbiology of PPRV is described comprehensively. Because of the current sensitivity about an emergence of PPRV and successful Global Rinderpest Eradication Programme, finally a chapter is dedicated to explore the possibilities to control and eradicate the PPRV from the globe, the way similar to rinderpest virus. Collectively, this book consists of high quality scientific and historical research contributed by the top experts in the field, from all around the globe. Moreover, editor’s vast experience with PPRV and collaborations with other researchers worldwide make this book unique. This book offers a valuable reference source for virologists, field veterinarians, infection and molecular biologists, immunologists, scientists in related fields and veterinary school libraries.

This book provides a synthesis of the key issues and challenges facing agriculture and food production in Southern Africa. Southern Africa is facing numerous challenges from diverse issues such as agricultural transformations, growing populations, urbanization and climate change. These challenges place great pressure on food security, agriculture, water availability and other natural resources, as well as impacting biodiversity. Drawing on case studies from Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the chapters in this book consider these challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering key areas in constraints to production, the most important building blocks of good farming practices, and established and emerging technologies. This book will be a valuable support for informing new policies and processes aimed at improving food production and security and developing sustainable agriculture in Southern Africa. This informative volume will be key reading for those interested in agricultural science, African studies, rural studies, development studies and sustainability. It will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and agricultural practitioners. Emerging And Re Emerging Infectious Diseases Of Livestock written by Jagadeesh Bayry and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-15 with Medical categories.
This book provides comprehensive knowledge on diseases in livestock that are caused by viruses, parasites and bacteria. Emerging and re-emerging pathogens are presented in detail for various animal groups and in-depth insights into pathogenesis and epidemiology will be provided for each of them. In addition, state-of-the-art treatment possibilities, control measures as well as vaccination strategies are discussed. The recent years have witnessed a sharp increase in the number of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of livestock and many of these, including Influenza, Corona and Hanta are of public health importance. The reasons for this development are manifold:changes in the climate, life cycle of vectors and increased global travel. Also, due to extensive deforestation, livestock are increasingly coming in direct contact with wild animals that are reservoirs of many emerging pathogens. Recent progress in diagnosis and management of emerging infectious diseases are also topic of this book.

African swine fever (ASF) is a disease with a mortality rate close to 100 percent. There is no vaccine and no conventional treatment against the disease. To reduce the effects caused by ASF outbreaks, optimal response mechanisms against probable ASF emergency disease situations need to be planned and rehearsed so that the disease can be controlled and eradicated in the most rapid and cost-effective way. These plans should be refined from time to time through simulation exercises and personnel should be trained in their individual roles and responsibilities. This manual provides information on the nature of ASF, and on the principles of, and strategic options for its prevention, control and elimination. Guidelines are given for individual countries threatened by ASF to formulate their own national policy on control and eradication of a possible incursion of the disease. The manual identifies both personnel and equipment and other facilities that are needed in a national ASF contingency plan. An outline of the suggested format and contents of a national contingency plan is also provided as a guide, which can be modified to suit the needs and circumstances of individual countries.
