Phospholipases in Physiology and Pathology is a thorough, comprehensive overview of the mechanistic and therapeutic aspects of phospholipases. The seven-volume set considers an elegant approach to unravelling the potential biochemical and molecular mechanisms of phospholipases in health and diseases. Additionally, the book discusses the use of phospholipases and their metabolites, and their downstream signaling components, as therapeutic targets for establishing prevention strategies. Volume 4, Role of Phospholipases in Inflammation, Gene Expression, and Apoptosis, covers the role of phospholipases in inflammation and apoptosis. In addition, some chapters have been included that relate to the implications of phospholipases in gene expression, noncoding RNAs, and epigenetic mechanisms in diseases such as neuronal conditions, atherosclerosis, and several types of cancers.

Handbook Of Proteases In Cancer written by Sajal Chakraborti and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-13 with Science categories.

This handbook provides comprehensive coverage of the role of proteases and the associated biochemical pathways in cancer development and metastasis. Proteases make up about 2% of the human genome and play a critical role in the tumor microenvironment. Handbook of Proteases in Cancer: Cellular and Molecular Aspects introduces the major classes of proteases and the signal transduction mechanisms associated with cancer initiation and progression. It discusses the role of inflammation and immune responses in proteases-induced cancer. The book covers cancer-induced gene expression and apoptotic and necrotic pathways in cancer. This is useful for researchers and professionals in cancer research, biochemistry, and physiology. Key Features • Provides insights on the roles of proteases and anti-proteases in the tumor microenvironment. • Covers various cancer-induced apoptotic and necrotic pathways. • Discusses the mechanisms by which proteases induce an increase in inflammation, immune response, and gene expression. • Covers the function of protease-activated receptors in cancer. • Reviews the different gene expression pathways and the ways they become erratic during protease-induced cancer.

A reference that provides the foundation of the basic science aspects of cardiac function and dysfunction, bridging the gap between basic cardiovascular science and clinical science. Divided into two major sections on cardiac muscle and coronary circulation, the volume integrates all relevant aspects of the factors influencing the function of the heart under normal and several abnormal conditions. It also provides a foundation for understanding of the mechanism of action of various types of cardioactive drugs, including antiarrhythmic drugs and positive inotropic agents. This revised and updated edition adds 14 new chapters, including two on the molecular structure of ion channels, and several on the ionic channels of myocardial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells. This volume provides a state-of-the-art overview of the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) in the pathophysiology of inflammatory diseases. Our knowledge about PLA2 has increased tremendously in the last two decades and investigations of the enzyme have revealed a whole family of different gene products. A rough distinction can be made between intracellular and secretory PLA2. The involvement of PLA2 in various life-threatening inflammatory diseases as well as in carcinomas is documented by many contributions to this volume. Recently developed transgenic and knockout mouse models are a powerful new tool for PLA2 research. A number of specific inhibitors of the various PLA2s offer new therapeutic approaches to control unwanted acute and chronic inflammatory responses and to intervene in malignant diseases. Due to the enzyme’s important role in these pathophysiological processes, this update of PLA2 research will interest basic scientists, physicians, oncologists, ICU specialists and surgeons.

Advances In Mitochondrial Medicine written by Roberto Scatena and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-08 with Medical categories.

Mitochondria are far more than the “powerhouse” of the cell as they have classically been described. In fact, mitochondria biological activities have progressively expanded to include not only various bioenergetic processes but also important biosynthetic pathways, calcium homeostasis and thermogenesis, cell death by apoptosis, several different signal transduction pathways mainly related to redox control of gene expression and so on. This functional and structural complexity may undergo important derangements so to justify the definition of ‘mitochondrial medicine’, which should include all the clinical consequences of congenital or acquired mitochondrial dysfunctions. There are actually a growing number of studies which assign a significant pathogenic role to damaged mitochondria in different diseases: ischemia/reperfusion injury, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer with its dramatic sequelae (i.e, metastasis), metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemias, just to mention a few of the most important pathologies. In this context, a further aspect that should not be disregarded is the interaction of pharmacological agents with mitochondria, not only in regard of the toxicological aspects but, above all, of the potential therapeutic applications. In fact, it is interesting to note that, while the properties of different so-called “mitoxicants” are well-known, the subtle linkages between drugs and mitochondria is still in need of a real pharmacological and therapeutic control at the clinical level. This lack of consideration can often lead to an underestimation of unwanted toxic effects but also of desirable therapeutic activities. A reevaluation of the potential clinical role of mitochondria could give a new light on some yet obscure aspects of human pathophysiology.
