"After surviving a difficult heartbreak and battle with cancer, Julia Baird began to explore how she and others persevere through the most challenging circumstances life throws at us. She asks: when our world goes dark, when we are overwhelmed by illness or heartbreak, loss or pain, tragedy outside our control, how do we survive, stay alive and even bloom? She went in search of "the magic that will sustain us and fuel the light within - our own phosphorescence ". Phosphorescence can be found in nature - in glow worms, fireflies, flashlight fish, bioluminescent oceans; it is a phenomenon that allows creatures to give off light amidst darkness. Baird writes about the things that lit her way through the darkness: a connection to nature, friendships, her faith, experiencing awe, and other habits that changed her life. She also goes in search of how others nurture their inner light, interviewing the founder of the modern forest therapy movement in Tokyo, a jellyfish scientist in Tasmania, and a tattooed priest from Colorado, among others. Weaving together candid memoir with research and reflections on nature, Baird inspires readers to embrace new habits and adopt a phosphorescent outlook on life, to illuminate our days even in the darkest times"--

Fluorescence And Phosphorescence Spectroscopy written by Stephen G Schulman and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-17 with Science categories.
Fluorescence and Phosphorescence Spectroscopy: Physicochemical Principles and Practice deals with the physicochemical principles and applications of fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy in experimental biology and chemistry. Topics covered include the absorption of light by molecules; instrumentation for the measurement of fluorescence and phosphorescence; solvent and acidity effects on electronic spectra; and polarization of fluorescence and phosphorescence. Comprised of four chapters, this book begins with a discussion on photophysical processes in isolated molecules and molecules in solution, paying particular attention to thermal equilibration of electronically excited molecules, phototautomerism, and coordination by metal ions. The next chapter describes the instrumentation for measuring fluorescence and phosphorescence, which consists essentially of a light source to electronically excite the sample; a monochromator to separate the light of desired energy from the source; a sample compartment; a second monochromator to isolate the sample's fluorescence energy from the excitation energy; a photodetector to translate the fluorescent light into an electrical signal; and a readout system such as a galvanometer or a recorder, coupled with an amplifier to determine the intensity of fluorescent light that is emitted. The final chapter is devoted to various applications of fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy, including the analysis of organic and inorganic compounds. This monograph is written primarily for analytical chemists and biological scientists.

Lola Jordan's life is sinking deep into disaster. Not only does she feel like a total loser at her new London school, but then her project on phosphorescence is read out in front of the entire school assembly – and she wants the ground to swallow her up. Why on earth did she write those weird descriptions of diving under glowing green waves like a glittering mermaid? Desperate to avoid everyone finding out that Lola's spent her entire life in a tiny seaside village, things take a serious turn for the worse when her project sparks a school trip to the Norfolk village where she grew up. Suddenly she finds herself stuck on a deserted island with a group of teenagers she has nothing in common with, and a boy she can't get out of her mind. Against a background of the mysteriously sparkling sea, the two halves of Lola's life collide in an explosion of romance and adventure.

Fluorescence spectroscopy and its applications to the physical and life sciences have evolved rapidly during the past decade. The increased interest in fluorescence appears to be due to advances in time resolution, methods of data analysis and improved instrumentation. With these advances, it is now practical to perform time-resolved measurements with enough resolution to compare the results with the structural and dynamic features of mac- molecules, to probe the structures of proteins, membranes, and nucleic acids, and to acquire two-dimensional microscopic images of chemical or protein distributions in cell cultures. Advances in laser and detector technology have also resulted in renewed interest in fluorescence for clinical and analytical chemistry. Because of these numerous developments and the rapid appearance of new methods, it has become difficult to remain current on the science of fluorescence and its many applications. Consequently, I have asked the experts in particular areas of fluorescence to summarize their knowledge and the current state of the art. This has resulted in the initial three volumes of Topics in Fluorescence Spectroscopy, which is intended to be an ongoing series which summarizes, in one location, the vast literature on fluorescence spectroscopy. These first three volumes are designed to serve as an advanced text. These volumes describe the more recent techniques and technologies (Volume 1), the principles governing fluorescence and the experimental observables (Volume 2), and applications in biochemistry and biophysics (Volume 3).

Photoluminescence written by Thomas S. Teets and has been published by American Chemical Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-21 with Science categories.
Photoluminescence provides readers with the appropriate background to thoroughly understand chemical literature involving photoluminescence measurements and interpret photoluminescence data from their own research. It includes a primer on experimental methods as well, so that readers with the appropriate instrument-specific training at their institution can begin conducting reliable photoluminescence experiments in their own research. Since it is rare for chemistry undergraduate or graduate programs to include courses entirely devoted to this topic, this e-book bridges that gap to give readers a solid foundation in photoluminescence, which is relevant to many areas of modern research.
