Originally published in 1981, this title is a collection of chapters based on papers presented at a conference called to explore what the editors called a developmental–interaction point of view – an approach to developmental psychology and education that stresses these interactive and reciprocal relations. The contributors, although from diverse professional backgrounds, are united in their commitment to an integrative view of developmental phenomena, one that highlights relationships among different aspects of development and the reciprocal nature of relations between people and their environments.

Introducing Piaget written by Ann Marie Halpenny and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-22 with Education categories.

Jean Piaget was one of the most significant contributors to our current understanding of how children think and learn, from birth through to adolescence. In this comprehensive and accessible new book, Ann Marie Halpenny and Jan Pettersen capture the key concepts and principles of Piaget’s fascinating work on children’s thinking, and explore how thinking evolves and develops from infancy through the early years and beyond. Areas covered in Introducing Piaget include: key milestones and achievements in children’s thinking; understanding the physical world through senses and movement in infancy; supporting the emergence of symbolic thought and language in the early years; understanding object permanence; implications of egocentric thinking in early childhood learning and development. Throughout the book, the consequences of these developments for children’s social, emotional and intellectual development are discussed. Updates on Piaget’s theory are also outlined with reference to more recent work on cognitive development in childhood. Each chapter provides a concise summary of material presented through a consideration of the implications for practice in working with children. A glossary of key Piagetian terms is also included. With a particular focus on how Piaget’s principles and concepts can be applied to children in early childhood, this exciting new book is an invaluable resource for teachers, practitioners and students with an interest in learning and development in the early years.

This book sets forth a new model of development from a causal perspective. As this is an area vital to several disciplines. It has been written at multiple levels and for multiple audiences. It is based on the work of Piaget and Neo-Piagetians, but also covers other major models in development. It has elements that make it attractive as a teaching text, but it is especially research-focused. It has clinical applications. It presents many new ideas and models consistent with the existing literature, which is reviewed extensively. Students, researchers, and practitioners should find it useful. The models presented in the present work build on models introduced in prior publications (e.g., Young, 1990a, 1990b; 1997).

Tying together almost four decades of neo-Piagetian research, Cognitive Development provides a unique critical analysis and a comparison of concepts across neo-Piagetian theories. Like Piaget, neo-Piagetian theorists take a constructivist approach to cognitive development, are broad in scope, and assume that cognitive development is divided into stages with qualitative differences. Unlike Piaget, however, they define the increasing complexity of the stages in accordance with the child’s information processing system, rather than in terms of logical properties. This volume illustrates these characteristics and evidences the exciting possibilities for neo-Piagetian research to build connections both with other theoretical approaches such as dynamic systems and with other fields such as brain science. The opening chapter provides a historical orientation, including a critical distinction between the "logical" and the "dialectical" Piaget. In subsequent chapters the major theories and experimental findings are reviewed, including Pascual-Leone's Theory of Constructive Operators, Halford's structuralist theory, Fischer's dynamic systems approach to skills, Case's theory of Central Conceptual Structures, Siegler’s microgenetic approach, and the proposals of Mounoud and Karmiloff-Smith, as well as the work of others, including Demetriou and de Ribaupierre. The interrelation of emotional and cognitive development is discussed extensively, as is relevant non neo-Piagetian research on information processing. The application of neo-Piagetian research to a variety of topics including children's problem solving, psychometrics, and education is highlighted. The book concludes with the authors' views on possibilities for an integrated neo-Piagetian approach to cognitive development.

Professor Piaget, who at this writing is in his eightieth year, has dedicated his life to the exploration and explanation of the genesis of knowledge. The Piagetian model rests on both a philosophical and a biological foundation, with psychol ogy as the link between these two disciplines. This volume, the first in a series that will record the official Symposium Proceedings of the Jean Piaget Society, is unique in that it encompasses theoreti cal, empirical, and applied aspects of Piaget's epistemology. The majority of papers in this collection represent the combined proceedings of the first and second annual symposia of the society. Professor Piaget's address, presented at the First Annual Symposium of the Jean Piaget Society in May, 1971, highlights the papers within this volume. This paper is outstanding in the clarity with which the concept of equilibration is explicated. It is the intention of the society, through this volume and subsequent ones, to extend the monumental body of knowledge provided by Piaget. The editors hope to implement transmission of the concepts within these selected papers so that they may serve as an impetus for future investigations. We are indebted to those who provided us with the invaluable editorial and secretarial assistance necessary for such an undertaking.
