Early modern Naples has been characterized as a marginal, wild and exotic place on the fringes of the European world, and as such an appropriate target of attempts, by Catholic missionaries and others, to ’civilize’ the city. Historiographically bypassed in favour of Venice, Florence and Rome, Naples is frequently seen as emblematic of the cultural and political decline in the Italian peninsula and as epitomizing the problems of southern Italy. Yet, as this volume makes plain, such views blind us to some of its most extraordinary qualities, and limit our understanding, not only of one of the world's great capital cities, but also of the wider social, cultural and political dynamics of early modern Europe. As the centre of Spanish colonial power within Europe during the vicerealty, and with a population second only to Paris in early modern Europe, Naples is a city that deserves serious study. Further, as a Habsburg dominion, it offers vital points of comparison with non-European sites which were subject to European colonialism. While European colonization outside Europe has received intense scholarly attention, its cultural impact and representation within Europe remain under-explored. Too much has been taken for granted. Too few questions have been posed. In the sphere of the visual arts, investigation reveals that Neapolitan urbanism, architecture, painting and sculpture were of the highest quality during this period, while differing significantly from those of other Italian cities. For long ignored or treated as the subaltern sister of Rome, this urban treasure house is only now receiving the attention from scholars that it has so long deserved. This volume addresses the central paradoxes operating in early modern Italian scholarship. It seeks to illuminate both the historiographical pressures that have marginalized Naples and to showcase important new developments in Neapolitan cultural history and art history. 2011 Winner of the Phyllis Goodhart Gordan Book Prize of the Renaissance Society of America Naples in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries managed to maintain a distinct social character while under Spanish rule. John A. Marino's study explores how the population of the city of Naples constructed their identity in the face of Spanish domination. As Western Europe’s largest city, early modern Naples was a world unto itself. Its politics were decentralized and its neighborhoods diverse. Clergy, nobles, and commoners struggled to assert political and cultural power. Looking at these three groups, Marino unravels their complex interplay to show how such civic rituals as parades and festival days fostered a unified Neapolitan identity through the assimilation of Aragonese customs, Burgundian models, and Spanish governance. He discusses why the relationship between mythical and religious representations in ritual practices allowed Naples's inhabitants to identify themselves as citizens of an illustrious and powerful sovereignty and explains how this semblance of stability and harmony hid the city's political, cultural, and social fissures. In the process, Marino finds that being and becoming Neapolitan meant manipulating the city's rituals until their original content and meaning were lost. The consequent widening of divisions between rich and poor led Naples's vying castes to turn on one another as the Spanish monarchy weakened. Rich in source material and tightly integrated, this nuanced, synthetic overview of the disciplining of ritual life in early modern Naples digs deep into the construction of Neapolitan identity. Scholars of early modern Italy and of Italian and European history in general will find much to ponder in Marino's keen insights and compelling arguments.

[Italiano]: Prendendo come fonte di partenza la cronaca inedita di Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) e le numerose descrizioni di cerimonie e apparati decorativi in essa contenute, il volume affronta il problema del controllo dello spazio della città di Napoli negli anni successivi alla rivolta di Masaniello. Il testo analizza la “politica cerimoniale” di cinque viceré - dal conte di Oñate a Pedro Antonio de Aragón - affiancata da quella del governo municipale e del capitolo della cattedrale, e sottolinea i momenti di attrito tra i diversi cerimoniali e la realizzazione polifonica dei principali eventi festivi. Lo studio integra l’analisi di diverse fonti: le cronache, gli avvisi (in particolare quelli conservati a Roma e Modena), le polizze di pagamento degli antichi banchi napoletani, i protocolli notarili, le consulte del Consejo de Italia, i viglietti dei viceré, quadri e incisioni dell’epoca e, ovviamente, le relazioni - manoscritte e a stampa - destinate a trasmettere il discorso della festa. Queste ultime, generalmente considerate come fonte di partenza per lo studio di ogni cerimonia, risultano fortemente ridimensionate dal confronto con una documentazione di carattere meno intenzionale. Il “tributo ossequioso” delle feste diventa dunque parte integrante di una contrattatazione dell’esercizio del potere che acquista la sua visibilità all’interno dello spazio urbano, in cui non solo le grandi cerimonie scenografiche ma anche le semplici feste per le inaugurazioni delle opere pubbliche sono indicate come un’importante occasione per la rappresentazione del consenso. ./[English]: Starting from the unpublished chronicle of Andrea Rubino (Notitia di quanto è occorso in Napoli dal 1648 fino a tutto il 1669) and the numerous descriptions of ceremonies and festivals’ decorations that it describes, the present work deals with the issue of controlling Naples’ urban space in the years following the revolt of Masaniello (1647-1648). The book analyzes the "ceremonial policy" of five viceroys - from the Count of Oñate to Pedro Antonio de Aragón - flanked by that of the municipal government and the cathedral chapter, and highlights some instances of friction between the different ceremonials to show the polyphonic source of the main festive events. The study integrates the analysis of different sources: the chronicles, the gazettes (in particular those preserved in Rome and Modena), the payments of Neapolitan public banks, the notary protocols, the consultations of the Consejo de Italia, the viceroys' viglietti, paintings and engravings and, of course, the festival books - handwritten and printed - intended to convey the discourse of festival. The latter, generally considered as main sources for the study of each ceremony, are properly contextualized by comparing and contrasting them with “less biased” forms of documentation. The "obsequious tribute" offered through the festivals becomes a way for negotiating the exercise of power that acquires its visibility within the urban space, in which not only the great scenic festivals but also the simple ceremonies for the inauguration of public works were an important opportunity for representing consensus

L'idea di coinvolgere in un'avventura editoriale un gruppo di circa 200 amici è nata in occasione del settantesimo compleanno di Marcello Fagiolo; già allora si stava tuttavia approssimando una data ben più importante di quella anagrafica: i cinquant'anni di studi, tanti sono quelli intercorsi dalla pubblicazione del primo suo libro Funzioni, simboli e valori della Reggia di Caserta (1963). Chi ha conosciuto Marcello Fagiolo da allievo ha avuto modo di apprezzare il Maestro affettuoso, l'amico e confidente sincero, disponibile e sempre pronto ad ascoltare e a elargire consigli, a incoraggiare lo studio e la ricerca, incanalando entusiasmi e ingenuità. A molti giovani egli ha trasmesso la passione per lo studio, l'onestà nella ricerca, la curiosità, l'esortazione a non accontentarsi di risultati facili, il coraggio di essere audaci anche in assenza di certezze. A giovani e a meno giovani ha dimostrato che è fondamentale il rispetto del lavoro di ognuno, il confronto di idee e metodi diversi; ha insegnato che il “grande libro dell'architettura” è immagine e compendio del “grande libro del mondo” e che è affascinante instaurare relazioni con contesti diversi a volte lontani nel tempo e nello spazio, evidenziando non tanto differenze e punti di rottura quanto continuità e analogie; che non basta saper vedere l'architettura ma è necessario saperla anche leggere, senza costringerla entro confini disciplinari netti; un'architettura fatta di simboli e di allegorie, di ordine e dis-ordine, di effimero ed eterno, di caos e di armonia delle sfere. Molti lo hanno seguito nell'intrepida costruzione di “Atlanti” di saperi. [English]:Starting from one of the most significant chapters of Leonardo's Libro di Pittura, we hwant to focus on the media - namely on the narrative, descriptive and graphics methodologies together with the techniques adopting during the modern and contemporary age as 'diffusers' of the landscape image - and on the deriving potential models for the enhancement of the historical landscape heritage.Partendo dalla nozione di paesaggio nella storia moderna e contemporanea, nel testo si affrontano le problematiche concernenti l‟evoluzione del suo significato fino al dibattito sulle diverse accezioni recentemente acquisite, con particolare riferimento ai contesti storici urbani. La lezione che si trae dai primi studi di Leonardo sulla percezione del paesaggio naturale e antropizzato, dalle guide e taccuini di viaggio del Cinque e Seicento, fino alla produzione di artisti e viaggiatori tra Sette e Ottocento e al più recente repertorio fotografico o cinematografico, mostra l‟importante ruolo da attribuirsi oggi all‟immagine storica del paesaggio quale strumento per l‟individuazione dell‟identità di un territorio, ormai in buona parte scevra da meri contenuti percettivi e oleografici, e sempre più legata ai fattori umani, storici e sociali, in una parola „culturali‟, che nell‟immagine vanno letti e tradotti. / [Italiano]: Si tratta in effetti di riconoscere nei caratteri „percettibili‟ di un paesaggio, attraverso gli strumenti della storia della città e dell‟iconografia storica, i valori culturali condivisi di un sito o di un insediamento: in tal senso l‟esperienza del Convegno CIRICE 2016 potrà segnare un nuovo passo non solo ai fini di un più consapevole riconoscimento di tali valori attraverso lo studio dei media adottati nella descrizione del paesaggio storico, ma verso un‟azione di tutela volta alla trasmissione e valorizzazione della memoria di quei luoghi.
