Saints and Signs analyzes a corpus of hagiographies, paintings, and other materials related to four of the most prominent saints of early modern Catholicism: Ignatius of Loyola, Philip Neri, Francis Xavier, and Therese of Avila. Verbal and visual documents – produced between the end of the Council of Trent (1563) and the beginning of the pontificate of Urban VIII (1623) – are placed in their historical context and analyzed through semiotics – the discipline that studies signification and communication – in order to answer the following questions: How did these four saints become signs of the renewal of Catholic spirituality after the Reformation? How did their verbal and visual representations promote new Catholic models of religious conversion? How did this huge effort of spiritual propaganda change the modern idea of communication? The book is divided into four sections, focusing on the four saints and on the particular topics related to their hagiologic identity: early modern theological debates on grace (Ignatius of Loyola); cultural contaminations between Catholic internal and external missions (Philip Neri); the Christian identity in relation to non-Christian territories (Francis Xavier); the status of women in early modern Catholicism (Therese of Avila).

Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels achieved stunning global success in part because of the mystery surrounding their pseudonymous author. English-speaking readers were tantalized by her enigmatic biography as well as what they took to be her authentic portrayal of working-class Naples. However, we now know that the person behind the writing is most likely Anita Raja, a prominent translator of German literature whose background is very different from Ferrante’s supposed life. In Finding Ferrante, Alessia Ricciardi revisits questions about Ferrante’s identity to show how the problem of authorship is deeply intertwined with the novels’ literary ambition and politics. Going beyond the local and national cultures of Naples and Italy, Ricciardi reads Ferrante’s fiction as world literature, foregrounding Raja’s work as a translator. She examines the novels’ engagement with German literature and criticism, particularly Goethe, Walter Benjamin, and Christa Wolf, while also tracing the influence of Italian thinkers such as Antonio Gramsci, Carla Lonzi, and the Milan Women’s Bookstore Collective. Considering central questions of sexuality, work, politics, and place, Ricciardi demonstrates how intertextual resonances reshape our understanding of Lila and Elena, the protagonists of the Neapolitan Quartet, as well as the characters and language of Ferrante’s other books. This bold reconsideration of one of today’s most acclaimed authors reveals Ferrante’s works as fiercely intellectual, showing their deep concern with feminist and cultural politics and the ethical and political stakes of literature.

Il campo di ricerca nel quale si inserisce questo lavoro è quello del dibattito intorno alla collocazione della religione in rapporto all’altra componente dell’umano, la ragione. Religione e ragione hanno attraversato un lungo e non semplice percorso di confronto: sono passate dalla fase dell’esclusione al riconoscimento, per approdare alla ricerca di una correlazione reciproca. È la situazione nella quale ci troviamo a dibattere oggi. Da questa premessa prenderà avvio la proposta di una condizione originaria e fondamentale che abbiamo chiamato unità-totalità “sostantiva”. Sarà la ricerca storico-antropologica di Julien Ries a dare avvio e forma alla “novità” nello studio dell’antropologia umana: “la nuova antropologia religiosa fondamentale”. L’homo religiosus come chiave di lettura della ricerca sulle religioni e sulle culture. La narrazione filosofica proposta da Charles Taylor farà emergere il cammino, la validità e il rapporto reciproco tra religione e ragione. Emergerà con forza la proposta di unità-totalità “sostantiva”; unità, perché inscindibile è l’essere; totalità, in quanto complementarietà di differenze; “sostantiva”, in ragione della sostanza individuale dell’essere umano.
