Sono cugine ma si sentono sorelle, sono clonate dalle eroine di Piccole donne:Nieves (Meg), Ada (Jo), Luz (Beth) e Lolla (Amy). I loro genitori hannodilapidato la fortuna ereditata dal mitico antenato, José Joaquín Martínez.Quando erano bambine le cugine si riunivano per le vacanze, con Oliviero (Laurie),il fratellastro di Luz, nella proprietà familiare (El Pueblo), gestita dallazia burbera e generosa che manteneva l’oziosa parentela: furono questi gliultimi anni privilegiati, di giochi spensierati e innocenti bisticci tra donne,lontano dagli sconvolgimenti sociali cileni. Poi ci fu il colpo di stato dell’11settembre 1973, l’arresto di Oliviero e l’esilio di Ada a Londra, innamoratadi Oliviero e rivale di Lolla. Quando inizia il romanzo, nel 2002, la famigliaè sparsa per il mondo e le tre cugine sopravvissute sono in attesa dirincontrarsi: Nieves, rimasta a Santiago, ha sposato un bravo ma squattrinatoragazzo, Lolla ha avuto una movimentata vita sentimentale ed è diventata un’ambiziosaeconomista, Luz è morta in Africa tra i poveri che aiutava. Quanto a Oliviero,salvatosi dalla prigione, ha studiato negli Stati Uniti dov’è diventato unbrillante avvocato. Ada, collaboratrice editoriale e aspirante scrittrice invari paesi europei, sogna ancora il cugino che, dopo il divorzio dalla moglieamericana, ha finito per sposare Lolla. L’attentato delle Torri Gemelle (altrofatidico 11 settembre) dà un tocco di drammaticità epocale alle vicendeprivate.Il romanzo, dichiaratamente un remake di Piccole donne, riesce asorprendere non solo nel mostrarci che le sorelle March, dovutamenterispolverate, sono tuttora capaci di emozionarci, ma anche e soprattutto per l’ingegnodimostrato nella tessitura dei personaggi, protagonisti e insieme narratori diuna saga ricca di sottigliezze psicologiche femminili e accenti epocali: l’ambientazionein Cile, dagli anni settanta in poi, permette una panoramica avvincente sulletrasformazioni della società cilena negli ultimi decenni. Inoltre, la diasporadella famiglia Martínez dà luogo a schizzi vivaci su Londra, Parigi eBarcellona negli anni settanta, sugli yuppies americani (Lolla, Oliviero)negli anni ottanta-novanta e sullo sgomento generale dopo l’attentato alleTorri Gemelle..
