Born in London in 1954, he moved to Leeds at the age of nine. On a holiday to Scarborough, he was taken on the pirate ship the Hispaniola, which was on a lake called The Mere. After this exciting holiday (and many Errol Flynn films) he dressed as a pirate at weekends, much to the astonishment of his friends.
