Volgens velen is Plato de belangrijkste filosoof aller tijden. Hij werd geboren in een rijke familie in Athene. Als tiener bezocht hij lezingen van rondtrekkende filosofen en wilde hij dichter worden. Hij besloot om de politiek in te gaan, maar haakte gedesillusioneerd af toen zijn leraar Socrates ter dood werd veroordeeld. Plato werd zelf leraar en stichtte een filosofische school die hij de Akademie noemde. En hij probeerde op Sicilië de tiran van Syracuse een politiek systeem te laten doorvoeren dat grotendeels gebaseerd was op zijn filosofie. Al bij leven had Plato een min of meer goddelijke status. Mede als gevolg daarvan zijn er vele verhalen en mythen rondom hem ontstaan. Maar er zijn weinig betrouwbare bronnen. Plato heeft het in zijn werk nooit over zichzelf. Plato-vertaler en -kenner Robin Waterfield schreef over de man achter het werk, daarbij gebruikmakend van dat werk en van de weinige gegevens die er zijn. Plato’s leven stond in het teken van de filosofie, schrijft Waterfield, en daarom moeten we erover lezen. Want de grote vragen, die bestaan nog steeds.

Vir die eerste keer in Afrikaans (die jongste Westerse taal wat in die afgelope eeu reeds sy eie unieke letterkunde geskep het) word die verhaal van Grieks vertel, die oudste Westerse taal waarin feitlik al die bekende literere genres hul weergalose vorm en gestalte gekry het. Hoewel hierdie publikasie basies linguisties van aard is, poog die skrywer om die dramatis personae self ook aan die woord te stel in plaas van om net in taalkundige jargon te verval. Om 'n werk soos hierdie saam te stel, vereis kundigheid in verskeie vaksubgebiede wat begin by oer-Grieks in sy sillabiese lynskriffases A en B. Die Grieks van die Goue Era van Perikles se Athene (circa 500 v.C.) is die bekendste. Min mense besef egter dat Homeros bedrieglik pre-klassiek is. Die klassieke Griek kon sy twee groot eposse (die Ilias en die Odusseia) nie sonder meer vlot lees nie. Dit was hulle Chaucer en Shakespeare. Die Griekse NT is sekerlik die belangrikste dokument wat ooit in Grieks opgestel is, hoewel dit stilisties nie naastenby die beste is nie. Vir sy bespreking van veral die semantiek van Moderne Grieks gebruik die skrywer hier vir die eerste keer dr. Philip Nicolaides se uitvoerige Grieks-Afrikaanse Woordeboek van 843 foliogrootte bladsye. Dis teen die middel van die vorige eeu opgestel, maar is nooit gepubliseer nie. Gerrit Kruger besit vandag die enigste (oorspronklike) kopie daarvan.

Door den Heer VAN KAMPEN uitgenoodigd, om na het vertalen van den Phaedo en den Theaetetus, mijne krachten tot de overbrenging van Plato’s Republiek in te spannen, deinsde ik in den beginne voor dien arbeid terug. Eindelijk echter heeft mijne genegenheid voor dat boek, hetwelk op mijn eigen ontwikkeling een grooten invloed heeft uitgeoefend, en de overweging, dat PLATO uit geen zijner schriften beter kan gekend worden, mij doen besluiten het werk op mij te nemen, vooral, daar het tegenwoordig welligt meer dan vroeger als heilzaam kan beschouwd worden, Plato’s Republiek toegankelijk te maken. Een paar plaatsen heb ik eenigzins bekort. Die het oorspronkelijke niet kennen, zullen er niets door missen; en de literatoren, die mijne vertaling misschien in handen nemen, zullen mij, hoop ik, gelijk geven. Ik heb weinig aanteekeningen bij den text gevoegd. Plato’s Republiek is voor den vertaler moeijelijk, maar na de vertaling blijft er weinig over, dat nog eene opzettelijke verklaring noodig heeft. Daarenboven was veel van hetgeen nog opheldering zou behoeven, door mij reeds vroeger behandeld. In zulke gevallen heb ik mij vergenoegd derwaarts te verwijzen.
