V 8 [31] Plotino cerca di indagare il complesso rapporto tra il carattere 'ideale' e quello 'reale' della bellezza e delle sue diverse forme di manifestazione nel mondo. Tra queste, che la tradizione precedente aveva recluso negli spazi angusti dell'arte imitativa, il filosofo neoplatonico prende spunto dall'opera dello scultore, per poi ampliare lo sguardo verso altri aspetti della bellezza: in particolare, quello del suo essere (ontologia) e quello del suo valore (etica). Lungi dall'essere una semplice testimonianza della corrente mistica del pensiero antico, il trattato Sulla bellezza intelligibile è anche (forse soprattutto) un invito all'azione e un comando a rendere oggetto del proprio agire innanzitutto sé stessi. Come Fidia dimostrò, grazie al suo Zeus Olimpio, che un grande artista non può limitarsi a concepire l'ideale, ma deve anche realizzarlo concretamente nella realtà; così ogni uomo, se vero uomo, sa ergersi sulla materia che lo circonda e farsi tempio della Luce intelligibile. *** Der vorliegende Band bietet eine neue italienische Übersetzung samt einer philosophiegeschichtlichen Einleitung und Kommentar zur Abhandlung Plotins Über die intelligible Schönheit (Enn. V 8 [31]). In Enn. V 8 [31] untersucht Plotin die komplizierte Beziehung zwischen dem 'ideellen' und dem 'realistischen' Charakter der Schönheit und ihren verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen in der Welt, die von der früheren Tradition als künstliche Nachahmungen kritisiert wurden. Als Beispiel zieht der neuplatonische Philosoph das Werk des Bildhauers heran und erweitert daraufhin seine Untersuchung im Hinblick auf andere Aspekte der Schönheit, insbesondere ihr 'Sein' (Ontologie) und ihren 'Wert' (Ethik). Weit davon entfernt ein Beweis für den mystischen Teil des antiken Denkens zu sein, ist die Abhandlung Über die intelligible Schönheit auch im Besonderen ein Aufruf zum Handeln und ein Befehl an jeden Menschen, sich selbst zum Objekt seines Handelns zu machen. Wie Phidias anhand seines Zeus bewies, ist es für einen großen Künstler nicht möglich, nur das Ideale zu denken, er muss es auch in der Realität verwirklichen. Auf dieselbe Art und Weise muss jeder (wahre) Mensch über der Materie stehen und sich selbst zum Tempel des intelligiblen Lichtes erheben, das überall sein Leben beleuchtet.****************The volume provides a new Italian translation of Plotinus' treatise On Intelligible Beauty (Enn. V 8 [31]), along with a historico-philosophical introduction and a commentary. In Enn. V 8 [31] Plotinus investigates the complex relationship between the 'ideal' character of beauty and the 'real' character of its various worldly manifestations. Among them, confined by the previous tradition within the bounds of imitative art, the Neoplatonic philosopher first focuses on sculpture. Then, setting out from this example, he turns to consider the broader aspects of the concept of beauty: in particular, its 'being' (ontology) and its 'value' (ethics). Far from merely being a testimony to the mystical side of ancient thought, the treatise On Intelligible Beauty is also (and perhaps above all) a call to action and a plea for every man to make himself first of all the object of his own action. Just as Phidias has shown through his Zeus that a great artist can not only conceive but also fully achieve ideal beauty in concrete reality, thus every (true) man knows how to rise above the matter around him, becoming the temple of the intelligible Light that illuminates his life all around.

Per Plotino la bellezza rappresenta un elemento imprescindibile di quello che possiamo chiamare il romanzo dell’anima: racconto drammatico e insieme meditazione filosofica che ha per oggetto la vita della psuché posta a mezzo e oscillante fra i due poli dell’intelligibile e della materia. I testi plotiniani si propongono come meditazione, come oggetto di studio, ma anche e soprattutto come modello di esercizio interiore, descrizione di un movimento vitale che l’anima deve far proprio: perché la vera vita è solo “lassù”, nel regno dell’essere, vita piena, variegata e seducente che ha in sé, in un grado più alto e più puro, le qualità che fanno bello il sensibile. Dal visibile all’invisibile, dal materiale all’immateriale, dalla dimensione dei corpi al regno della mente e del pensiero assoluti, dal dispiegamento del molteplice all’unità inscindibile: questo è il viaggio iniziatico cui i trattati plotiniani qui raccolti ("Il bello", "Il bello intelligibile" e "Il bene e l’uno") invitano il proprio lettore, questa è la traiettoria di una "philosophia", di un “amore della sapienza” che, giorno dopo giorno, è esercizio e pratica di sé, impegno vitale e sforzo strenuo di accedere a un altro piano di coscienza e a una diversa forma di esistenza.

Through the concept of contraction, Giordano Bruno (1548-1600) endeavoured to explain the relationship of God to his Creation in a way that conformed with his pantheistic view of nature as well as his heterodox view of man’s relationship to God. The concept of contraction is twofold. In the ontological sense it denotes the way in which the One, or God, descends to multiplicity. In the noetic sense it accounts for the ways in which the individual human soul ascends towards God through a reversed process of contemplation. Bruno denied the efficacy of the several psychical, psychological and medical states traditionally thought to aid contemplation and noetic ascent towards God. In his view the only means was philosophical contemplation, the use of memory being one important form. Philosophical contemplation elevated the mind from the fragmented multiplicity of sense impressions to an understanding of the principles governing the sensible world. This publication is the first book-length study dedicated to concept of contraction in Bruno’s philosophy. Moreover, it explores his sources for this concept. Traditionally Ficino’s translation of Plotinus, dating from the second half of the fifteenth century, has been seen as a key source to the Neoplatonism informing Bruno’s philosophy. In The Concept of Contraction in Giordano Bruno’s Philosophy another Neoplatonic source is considered, namely the pseudo-Aristotelian Liber de Causis (Book of causes), which has not yet been examined in the context of Renaissance Neoplatonism. This work, probably written in Arabic in the ninth century, was translated into Latin in the twelfth century and remained well known to many late Medieval and Renaissance philosophers. Catana argues that this work may have prepared for Ficino’s translation of Plotinus, and that in some instances it provided a common source to Renaissance philosophers, Bruno and Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) being conspicuous examples discussed in this book.
