Gibt es eine spanische Renaissance so wie es eine italienische gegeben hat, und welche Rolle spielt der Aristotelismus in Spanien? Noch. E. R. Curtius beschäftigte diese Frage sehr. Eine endgültige Antwort hat er darauf leider 1 nicht mehr geben können • Die Zusammenstellung der europäischen Poetiken 2 von Saintsbury und Spingarn bewies offensichtlich die Unwirksamkeit des Aristotelismus in der spanischen Literatur des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts, dem Goldenen Zeitalter. Weit mehr, die Antithese von Aristotelischer Theorie und literarischer Praxis schien nirgendwo größer zu sein als in dem vielfach so mißverstandenen Lande. Die Wirksamkeit der Theorie auf die spanische Literatur wird bestritten. Spanische Literatur, zumal die Literatur der Edad de Oro, ist aus dem nationalen Erbe geboren, ist naturhafte Literatur, ist « canto llano ». Dennoch läßt Literatur und ihre Entwicklung sich nicht völlig von der literarkritischen Atmosphäre ihrer Zeit trennen. Wer könnte schon die Richtigkeit und Bedeutung der Gedanken Menendez y Pelayos be streiten, wenn dieser sagt: "Hinter jedem literarischen Ereignis steht eine ästhetische Idee, mitunter eine Theorie oder eine vollständige Doktrin, über die sich der Künstler Rechenschaft gibt oder nicht, die aber auf jeden Fall 3 seine Eingebungen auf wirksame und realistische Weise lenkt . . . La inclusión de la presente edición de la Poética de Aristóteles en la Nueva Biblioteca Románica Hispánica hace innecesarios el esfuerzo y la aventura de purificar así el texto de Aristóteles. A los lectores atraídos por los temas habitualmente estudiados en esta Biblioteca les interesa sobre todo la obra aristotélica tal como la conocieron los grandes escritores y preceptistas europeos que basaron en ella su práctica o sus teorías desde el Renacimiento hasta el Romanticismo. Algunos de aquellos escritores o preceptistas leyeron y estudiaron la Poética directamente en griego. Otros, más numerosos, la conocieron en alguna de las traducciones latinas que se multiplicaron por Europa desde fines del siglo XV. Hoy los más preferirán leerla en su propia lengua. Pero a todos les agradará, y aun les ayudará a calar hondo en el pensamiento de Aristóteles, poder confrontar con la traducción moderna el texto griego, o la versión latina, casi siempre más próxima a él que cualquier traducción moderna. The bibliography of Aristotle's Poetics by Cooper and Gudeman, most welcome in 1928, has now become antiquated, even for the period it covers. The present one registers all editions, translations, commentaries and studies bearing on the Poetics or the major concepts that have been associated with it, correctly or incorrectly, from 1481 up till 1996. Moreover, a survey is given of the medieval translations and commentaries written in the Orient and in Europe. Special attention has been given to the reviews. The oldest one registered dates from 1697. The second book of the Poetics being lost, publications related to the Tractatus Coislinianus, which partly rests on Poetics II, have been included. There are seven indices. Especially those on passages and subjects should prove to be useful instruments. In the author's text Greek nouns and adjectives have been transliterated.

Golden Age departures in historiography and theory of history in some ways prepared the ground for modern historical methods and ideas about historical factuality.
