Er macht blitzartig die Grenzen des Textes, seine Mittel und Entstehungsbedingungen sichtbar und hinterfragt sie: Könnten die Geschichten auch anders erzählt werden, die Subjekte anders handeln? Man will seine Geschichte erzählen und scheitert daran, aber in diesem Scheitern erzählt sich die Geschichte unfreiwillig doch - so ließe sich das Paradox des Abbruchs zusammenfassen. Es macht zugleich seine Poesie und seine Kraft aus. Jörg Albrecht liefert einen Vorschlag für eine Poetik solcher Momente des Abbruchs. Dazu untersucht er 20 deutschsprachige Prosatexte und Hörspiele aus den Jahren 1965 bis 2002, u.a. von Brinkmann, Fichte, Jelinek, Goetz, Jandl, Mon, Fassbinder. Im Fokus steht dabei die literargeschichtliche Einordnung des Abbruchs, die theoretische Kontextualisierung sowie die performative Qualität.

Ein ganzes Buch über ein einziges kurzes Gedicht, das für viele Menschen das schönste Gedicht deutscher Sprache ist. »Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh' ...« – An die Wand einer Jagdhütte auf dem Kickelhahn bei Ilmenau schrieb Goethe 1780 diese Verse, die zum bekanntesten Gedicht in deutscher Sprache überhaupt werden sollten, zu einem Musterbeispiel dessen, was man unter Lyrik seither versteht. Am Beispiel dieses populären Gedichts und seiner Rezeption lassen sich deshalb die Formen des Umgangs mit einem lyrischen Paradigma und der Gebrauch – und auch Missbrauch –, den man von ihm gemacht hat, gut beobachten. Man stößt dabei auf die hymnischen und oft hilflosen Versuche der Literaturwissenschaft, das Geheimnis großer Poesie aufzudecken, aber auch auf die zahlreichen Formen einer produktiven Rezeption durch Vertonungen, lyrische Anverwandlungen, Aneignungen und Gegengedichte, Übersetzungen, Parodien und Karikaturen, die Segebrecht vorstellt und kritisch betrachtet. Dargestellt wird die Rezeptionsgeschichte des Gedichts als Bewusstseinsgeschichte. Die Reihe der behandelten Autoren reicht dabei von Kleist, Brecht und Karl Kraus bis zu Günter Kunert, Erich Fried, Ernst Jandl und Albert Ostermaier.
