La politica estera dell’Italia si è svolta fin dall’inizio all’interno di un quadro di relazioni internazionali di multipolarismo ben temperato. Lo scenario della politica internazionale, dalla fine della seconda guerra mondiale a oggi, è stato infatti caratterizzato dalla presenza di una pluralità di poli determinanti e da un quadro di relazioni complesso che coinvolge con forme e modalità diverse tutti gli Stati. In questo contesto, i diritti umani hanno acquisito nel corso del tempo maggiore centralità in seno all’ordinamento internazionale, anche attraverso il ruolo delle Nazioni Unite. L’Italia, sin dall’inizio del secondo dopoguerra, ha aderito con entusiasmo all’idea di una costruzione progressiva di una società internazionale pacifica basata, fra gli altri fattori, anche sul rispetto dei diritti umani. Tuttavia, in un quadro soggetto a molteplici crisi e in cui gli equilibri geopolitici sono in fase di cambiamento, è necessario rivalutare la politica estera del nostro paese e considerare con quali strumenti l’Italia può promuovere con maggiore coraggio i diritti umani nelle relazioni internazionali. Il volume ripercorre pertanto, attraverso un approccio multidisciplinare, i settori e le aree di azione di interesse per la politica estera italiana traendo raccomandazioni e lezioni per il futuro.
